I went there in 2007. Amazing site, I felt like those nineteenth century European explorers who 'discovered' pyramids in Yucatan after walking through the forest. At that time the only sign was one off the side of the road but we managed to work it out through old maps and talking to locals. When i say big it means a 200-300 meters long and 3 meter high. We ask locals and they told us it was a underground compleks, and there is a house in witch nazi generals were hiding at the end of the war. And few minute later we found this house, there is a big stone on witch is writen in german that in this house this generals were here when american soliders cought them. There was a lot of legends about underground tunnels and Germans or "Hitlerowcy" - [Hitler's men] still guarding them, treasures and weapons. Adults always told us to never go to them places - when I was young my cat went there and never came out! Back in the 80's/90's in EVERY Polish village you could have met some old man bragging about the last days of war and some German trucks trying to escape through the frozen lake ;-) That car is still there, boys :-D Sometimes it wasn't a truck but SS-Mann on a horse. For starters prior to the National Socialists, racial theory stated that all Europeans were Aryan -- they all descended from Indo-Europeans a long time back. Slavs included. Although the Germans in WWII wanted a land empire spanning Eastern Europe, some people doubt this. Either way in my opinion, the anti-Slav sentiment was not important whether or not they were related to Germans, or were Aryan. It was the simple fact that Lebensraum or expansionism was more important than racial theory in that instance. Also I agree with @Austria D's answer, simply put their foreign policy and geopolitical concerns were only in Europe. Anything else was probably to be decided at a later date if circumstances allowed.

Ha, in late 80s I was staying at the Steinort Manor (in Sztynort) during sailing camp. Back then the complex was fully restored and operational, there were also a couple of WW2 vehicle wrecks there. Now, the manor is in very poor shape and disrepair. I have also visited OKH command in Mamerki (Mauerwald) during many sailing trips on the Masurian Lakes District - there is a small marina at lake Mamry located few minutes walk from the bunkers. Thank you for yet another amazing production Mark!
@thomaswolf2896
@thomaswolf2896 4 года назад
I don't know where you stayed, it was certainly not Steinort manor. I was there in '87, it was not "operational" and not "fully restored" it was an impressive manor slowly turning into a ruin.
@panzer_maxus9970
@panzer_maxus9970 4 года назад
@@thomaswolf2896 It was either 85 or 86 - the building was restored or at least working (I was about 12 or 13 back then) - my parents sent me to a sailing school/camp. I was supposed to go back there the following year, but apparently during the winter the heating failed, water froze in the pipes and burst causing flooding and damage. The building was falling into disrepair since then. It is very unfortunate, that in spite of many years, no organisation was able to restore it. It would be now a wonderful hotel with a huge natural park behind the building.

“The breeze less, fetid swamp of the Wolf’s Lair.” Fitting. Though I’m sure some of the inhabitants would have welcomed that stink after their first few days holed up in that tomb of a bunker in Berlin.

From all accounts, the Wolf's Lair was one of the most unpleasant places to live-freeing cold in Winter, hot and humid with mosquitoes in summer. Note that Hitler and his staff never dressed down-always in full uniform in that summer heat.

sry but the pronunciation of Hochwald is completely wrong. the ch should not sound like a 'k' like the Ch in character, it is pronounced the same way you would pronounce Loch Ness. With the 'k' the meaning is sitting woods (I was a bit confused after hearing it xD) but the correct meaning is high woods when it's pronounced correctly :D

There is also a bunker like that in the Netherlands, near Arnheim. It was used to coordinate air defense. I have been in it. It was not attacked during the fighting near Arnheim, confusing the Germans. Nowadays it houses some of the national archives of the Netherlands, so it is not open to the public. It has a very elaborate ventilation system built in to keep a good atmosphere for the papers in there.
