A small story of my family's (Indian) link with Pakistan's Attock. My great grandfather was in the British Indian army and his best mate in the army was from Attock in Pakistan. When my great grandfather was taken POW by the Germans, his friend was just itching to go out and search for him. Later, when he escaped torture (lost his nails and all his toes during his interrogation) and rejoined his unit, only his mate was the one who ran out and hugged him instead of pointing an Enfield at him and screaming, like the other British soldiers did. My great grandfather never got to visit him in Pakistan, nor did he get a chance to visit my great grandfather in India, because of my grandfather's service in the Indian army. But they remained in touch for a long time. Later, in 2010, their family had come to India for a surgery, and we got to host them. Hopefully we were able to serve them well enough to make my great grandfather proud. His name was 2nd Lieutenant Naseer Khan, from Attock, which used to be known as Campbellpur at that time, and he lived in a locality called Dokh Sarfh. I don't know if that place still exists. My great grandfather lived with him for two years just before the war in Dokh Sarfh. He had bought a large piece of land there too, as he planned to settle there, but he was told after the war to just forget about the land as it became too hostile for a Hindu to live so deep within Pakistan. It remained his biggest regret ever, as he wanted to live the rest of his life in Attock along with his friend.
Karachi use to be like Dubai of 20th century. Rich and multicultural society. Islamic radical jihad has lead to total boycott of non-muslim and parsis, which lead to great collapse to such vibrant city.
