This film focuses on the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities, but this time through the lens of Afghan immigrants to the UK, particularly Southall in London.
Strongly reflecting Afghan pride and ancestry, the documentary is primarily filmed in Dari/ Farsi with English narration. ‘Hindu Kush to Thames' is filmed and directed by Ariadne Bechthold with support of the Gharghasht Gharghakht, Afghan Voice Radio (UK), in collaboration with Pritpal Singh (TheDutchSikh), Ajmeet Singh (Flo Studio) and Harkiran Kaur.
---------------
My first year at UC Berkeley, I enrolled in a course offered once every four years: History and Culture of Afghanistan. From then began a safar of desperately seeking every possible grain of knowledge pertaining to the country. However, I remained deprived on one aspect - the Sikh community of Afghanistan. After doing countless presentations based on whatever I could find, I discovered Pritpal Singh’s efforts and depiction from a Sikh perspective. I was elated. Mission Afghanistan • MISSION AFGHANISTAN | ... finally introduced the Afghan Sikh community to the world. Following up on Mission Afghanistan's coverage of the plight of Sikhs living in Afghanistan, 'Hindu Kush to Thames' sheds light on those who have emigrated. Skillfully filmed and directed by Ariadne Bechthold, this is a one-of-a-kind documentary on a non-Punjabi Sikh immigrant population.
Once known for its thriving trade routes and culture, Afghanistan has now become known for its turbulent political history, causing many Afghans to migrate. Most of the migration is said to have occurred during the Civil War years and under Taliban rule. Of the more than 50,000 Afghan Sikh and Hindu families that lived in Afghanistan, of which about 3000 were left according to Rawail Singh, deputy head of the Afghanistan Sikh and Hindu Community Council. Thousands of miles away from the homeland however, a small community of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus have preserved the culture and traditions of the dwindling community.
In this documentary filmed and directed by the multitalented Ariadne Bechthold, Pritpal Singh focuses again on the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities, but this time through the lens of Afghan immigrants to the UK, particularly Southall. By carefully juxtaposing the life left behind, with life in their adopted homes, the sacrifices and struggles are masked with vibrant displays of faith, music, food and dance. The documentary also presents rare video footage of the Sikh traditions in Kabul in the late 80s, alongside Ardas in the nearly empty diwan halls of Kabul today, and the vibrant and overflowing hall of Gurudwara Southall, London. With touching depictions of the dilapidated mandirs and gurudwaras in Kabul, and impressive retention of their roots throughout generations on foreign soil, Bechthold and Singh share the story of immigrants who are rarely covered in Afghan mainstream media, or Sikh media.
Sikhs have been a vital part of the Afghan community. With interjections by historian Harbans Singh Handa, the audience learns of the various political positions held by Sikhs over the years in Afghanistan, even visiting the British home of the 3rd Sikh MP of Afghanistan: Gajender Singh. Other prominent personalities such as Inder Geet Singh are also introduced alongside second generation British-Afghans.
Strongly reflecting Afghan pride and ancestry, the documentary is primarily filmed in Dari/ Farsi with English narration. ‘Hindu Kush to Thames is filmed and directed by Ariadne Bechthold with support of the Gharghasht Gharghakht, Afghan Voice Radio (UK) and Ajmeet Singh / Flo Studio. Reflecting the shared sense of nostalgia amongst all the Afghans, the documentary shows their connectedness with home. Often misunderstood to have immigrated from India, this is the story of Afghanistan’s religious minorities who have immigrated to London and made a name for themselves.
How has this community managed to retain its unique and often misunderstood identity on foreign soil? Be sure to watch the documentary on TheDutchSikh’s channel to find out!:

I have some very fond memories of this great country. Us as Afghans have all suffered greatly because of the civil unrest, but sikhs and hindus disproportionately so. It has been a community with deep historic roots - now on the verge of total extinction. Well done Pritpal for bringing this out to the wider audience.

My heart bleeds and tears come out of my eyes when i see my people regardless of their religion and caste living in different corners of the world but never forgetting their roots and homeland Afghanistan. As the documentary show we did live in harmony and brotherhood in the past and are at the present and for sure in the future as well. Dear Sikhs and Hindus you are as much Afghans as a common Muslim of this country, even you have more rights than a Muslim over here, you are as patriotic as a Muslim and this is as much your Afghanistan as mine beyond any doubt. We are one nation, one Afghan and citizens of one Great Afghanistan which gives us our identity in the world. long live Sikh,Hindu And Muslims of Afghanistan. Long live Afghanistan. May Allah bring the peace and harmony back to our beautiful Afghanistan. Aameen

I am so ashamed to say that you guys have gone through a lot of pain and struggle due to your minority in the country bu that was changed completely until the dark and bloodshed era commenced after Dr Najeebullah's government. Since then every Afghan suffered no matter if they were Pashtun, Tajik, Uzbik, Sikh or Hazara. Our enemies are killing our unity and we must stand together and not let this happen. Please keep educate your children even if you are in London or another country because one day you maybe the son of our motherland who can bring peace in the country. I am grown up in Germany Afghan boy, I love sooooo much The most beautiful, Honestly, honorable, very warm and very friendly in the world Afghan Sikh and Hindu and of course i love their Music with The best Melody, perfect Performance and very significant poetry. Afghan Sikh and Hindu fascinates and inspires me , Afghan Sikh and Hindu are very proud people, very Tolerant, hospitable, very civilized, highly cultured, Courageous, resolute, talented, very Disciplined, very diligent. Elegant, intelligent, educated, very peaceful and very loving. Afghan Sikh and Hindu are very Modern and liberal with proud story. I'm very proud of Afghan Sikh and Hindu. formerly Afghanistan was a very peaceful country with diversity and fairness, Afghanistan was place of encounter of cultures and nations who live very peacefully with each other. Afghanistan was land of beautiful colors, land of beautiful flowers but unfortunately today Afghanistan is a broken country, Islamic fundamilies be traniet, educated and formed in Pakistan into the Quran schools and after being brainwashed back to Afghanistan as a hate preacher and suicide bomber and regrettably they discriminate against minor minorities above all the Afghan Sikhs and Hindus,I regret this and as an Afghan I am ashamed of it. I hope that sometime in Afghanistan comes a tolerance and Democrat Regieion that our compatriots like Afghan Sikh and Hindus and other Afghan nations are going back home. 🙏 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c5Y0fCQzS7s.html

*It was absolutely beautiful! Thank you so very much for making this video! It shows how strong the name "Afghan" is as it is so powerful! No matter what your religion or ethnicity is, if your roots are from Afghanistan you hold Afghan blood in you! Please stay in Afghanistan. And those Sikhs that have left I ask please become great and educated people and go back and help rebuild your name and roots in the nation, while helping the nation thrive against hate and violence.*
