Hinge Cutting vs Flush Cutting - Managing Timber for Wildlife

We take a wall through the timber to observe some of the big differences in cutting techniques and how we should be utilizing different types of cuts to meet our wildlife needs! This offers many solutions to the question of how to add food and cover to my farm that isn't in food plot acres. From woody browse to herbaceous forage and cover this is one of the best ways to maximize your farm. Say goodbye to close canopy forest that's dominating your forest, utilize a chainsaw and open the canopy and let nature respond.

This is an outstanding idea Ron. Would be especially helpful to be able to see some of these invasives that are mentioned so often on the podcast. I struggle with identifying plants. The books and apps help, but if you guys could do some videos focusing on the plants you find during your travels that would be great!

This is a really good explanation on how to improve timber locations. One question I have is, how quick to you need to burn the area to prevent all of the stump sprouts from getting too large for fire to set back?
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
Thank you. Really depends on the species you’re trying to control, the site index, and location in the country. I good goal would be a fire every 3-5 years
@ronswanson8247

Love the diversity... when is the best time to hinge cut for the results you are seeking?
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
We do a lot of cutting during the winter/early spring. But we don't cut just during that window, we cut year-round as needed and time allows.
@mikecoleman945

Great! I have a fair amount of bottom land in North Central Kansas. Lately, I have been focusing on cedar removal. Is there a particular tree species that I should consider experimenting some hinge cuts on?
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
In your area, look to hinge or flush cut for regen purposes, american elm, redbud, osage orange and mulberry. Good luck, be safe!

What is the LOWEST height you would leave a stump that is flush cut? For instance if the remaining stump is only 6” high out of the ground will it have a lower chance or surviving than say a stump that is left higher at like 24”? Ideally I would like to make as short flush cuts as possible if I run a brush hog over the reprod years later.
@TP-xc7bz
@TP-xc7bz 3 года назад
What would be your next step for those hinge cuts? As they continue to grow into the mid story level and out of reach of typical prescribed fire?
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
We'd go back and cut them down again, but flush cut them on the second go around.
@BretWickstrom
@BretWickstrom 3 года назад
What would you do with pine? Better to flush cut or just let it grow for timber later?
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
Depends on the market and if Pine is cut In the area for lumber. If not cut it down, if so then it’s up to the landowner to decide on more habitat or timber income in the future

Timber Stand Improvement
@Landandlegacytube
@Landandlegacytube 3 года назад
David Craft Sean is correct. When using TSI the goal is to manage for a potential timber harvest. FSI is just general forest management that might not be with the goal of a timber sale. This area on the video is a north slope so a timber harvest is the goal
