Matt Dye and Adam Keith of Land & Legacy discuss why hinge cutting should not be considered timber stand improvement. Many landowners believe that going into their woods and hinge cutting a bunch of trees means they have done TSI - we like hinge cutting, but there is so much more to TSI than just hinge cutting trees.

A lot of people need to see this! It's a tool and has its place but it is not timber stand improvement like many people think.

Very well said Matt and Keith. I have do not always recommend clients to hinge cut on every property, it is a great tool when it can be used. But definitely can work even better along side of FSI and prescribed fire. I think it would be beneficial to highlight the difference between FSI and TSI.

Valid point. What we’ve found over time is TSI gets easily confused and adding FSI into the glossary of terms just confuses people even more haha we’ve started just using tsi to help people understand it better

TSI is not wildlife management or improvement. TSI main focus is board freet, not wildlife. The majority of trees that benifit wildlife havr very little or zero market value.

Great, thoughtful explanation!

Based on the limited drone footage and background of where you are standing - it appears you have yourself a high grade, not TSI. Many subordinate / co-dominant / small diameter / runt trees have been left (are all that is left)... that is not Timber Stand Improvement, that's high grading. TSI is used to increase future growth/basal area and value of sought after and/or dominant trees, by removing/girdling/hinge cutting those that aren't. If you're going to use Forestry terms, please do it correctly. What you are explaining is not TSI.

High grade would be for the sake of financial profit, this cutting was done for the sake of restoring a open landscape that was once here. You are correct in seeing this isn’t being managed as a timber tract because our goal is more savanna restoration now, but for the sake of showing plant response and opening the canopy we chose this filming location.

@@Landandlegacytube High grading is a selection process - not necessarily a profit process. I have no interest in furthering arguing. You guys have a nice following, please select - no pun intended - the appropriate terms and science when you produce videos.

@@danielcarroll5271 no arguing here. You weren’t able to see this area when we started. We cut way more trees than the loggers did. It was a poor “forest” to start, actually my grandparents were grazing it with cattle 50 years ago, so it’s never been a forest with nice oaks that we high graded out.

@@Landandlegacytube Always gonna be somebody get technical with terminology, instead of understanding the focus of this video; educating the majority of the industry on the truth of a technique. Hi grade or not, if there were no high value/seed trees to begin with from prior mismanagement, of source the best option you have is cutting it back to restart the succession
