I remember the day Princess Diana passed and the funeral vividly. He was so close to her his heart was broken like many of us. So touching such a loss ❤ If you don't know her story you should watch it. She was like an angel to so many poor nations. When AIDS came out she was the first person to visit the infected people showing the world not to be afraid of the people because you couldn't catch it just by touching them. She would hug them so tight and loved them so much. She would also go to war torn countries and walked through minefields like the people in those countries have to..She showed us human compassion. She suffered greatly being married to Charles and her strength was remarkable. RIP Diana 🙏 Peace out ✌️ ☮️
That song still gets to me. I remember watching this so many years ago and it's just as gut wrenching now as it was then. Diana deserved far better than what she got with the then Prince Charles. I certainly hope he learned something since then.
Sadly it was a marriage made for tradition rather than love and both people suffered for it. She truly loved him but his true love was always his second wife
Diana was friends with a few of London's musicians and Elton was one of them. He did not write this song for Diana, he had released it earlier but he was asked to perform at her funeral so he changed the song slightly and this is that song. So beautiful as was Diana.
He and The Princess where very close, so another, less noticed aspect of this was his ability to keep his composure, and his voice free of cracks... not to mention the pressure of knowing the performance will be broadcast worldwide, with no delay or second chances, and will go down in history beyond the normal immortality of music. AND, of course, hats off to Bernie for reworking the song so quickly and capturing the essence of her presense, and her loss. The line about placing herself where lives were torn apart, a not so subtle reference to her work re: landmines, and of course AIDS. (She really was what the Monarchy had been missing for so long, and is now without, once again). Two master artists combining to create art that transcends the normal. I'm 63, so it was part of my life experience, and it still brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. I actually bought the single cd for my grandmother, and have now got it back after her passing.✌🏼🇨🇦
I remember that day my wife, was girlfriend at the time, was so heartbroken a d cried and cried, she said Princess Diana was the greatest humanitarian, Aids, leprosy and hug people, going to countries fight the stigmas, a d landmimes she was such a beautiful graceful kind women, will be missed ❤😢😢🙏🙏
Can you imagine the pressure Elton John must have been under, performing as he did in front of the crowd, dignitaries, royalty, tv cameras, etc. with the whole world watching via satellite. Not only does the man have a gift of the gods for music, but he obviously also has nerves of steel. Wow, what an epic, memorable performance! 👍👍👍
A side note of interest both Freddie murcury and Elton John were friends with princess Diana. Freddie's death from auds and knowing how he was hounded by some of the English press, spur her on to show the world that aids victims should not be rejected and seen as ut being their fault. She was filmed holding hand with a gentleman dying of Aids. A funny story, Freddie and a friend dressed her up in a disguise and took her a gay club as she was desperate to o do something normal without all the pomp and bodyguards. No one recognised her as they were more captivatedeith Freddie being there. Rest in peace ,both of them,i bet they are having a blast in heaven. Xx
He originally wrote this song dedicated to actress Marilyn Monroe entitled "Candle In The Wind" -- look it up so you can listen to the lyrics. He then took that melody & changed the words to reflect the death of Diana & the title became "Goodbye England's Rose." Unfortunately whoever did this original video cut it off before we could see how everyone inside the church began to applaud & it then went to the thousands of people outside who all stood up & applauded. It was a very touching moment & should have been included as the end of the video.
Princess Diana was the best.. everyone else didn't care about.. But I did love the queen Elizabeth recently passed... Excuse me for what I'm about to say, but you know we all recall what we were doing the moment a disaster happened, well the night she was killed me an my girlfriend was getting down an dirty while the TV was on, an breaking news came on an it took a minute for it to sink into our minds an we both realized she was killed, we actually stopped out of respect for Diana, then of course we got back to business... THE END..
