No one will ever replace Freddie in Queen, the whole band were and still are amazing, they could all write, sing , they had so much talent . They were not just friends they were a family. R.I.P Freddie we will all miss you
They were more than friends, more like family. Brian revealed that he considered suicide when Freddie died, and that he, Brian, had just lost his father as well! John was so devastated by Freddie’s death that he just left. For him Queen died with Freddie, and though John continues to manage the business side of things for them, he remains a recluse to this day. Roger was especially close to Freddie and was not able to handle it very well either. This song always makes me cry. Freddie left a big empty space that no one could fill, not for Queen or for us. I appreciated your reaction as always. 😥
This was their tribute to Freddie, written by Brian. It’s also the very last project bassist John Deacon did with them, completely retiring and withdrawing from the public eye afterwards.
John Deacon left in 97 after doing The Show must go on..which involved Elton John and a Ballet company. You can find it here on RU-vid..the band members actually say that John wasn't really I a good place.
Sharon All for love and positivity I believe the Bejart Ballet thing was done before the music video... but yes, these were the two very last projects John did before he retired for good.
@@imweakfordeaky It was first performed in the Théâtre de Chaillot in January 1997 in the presence of Madame Chirac, Elton John and the three surviving members of Queen, John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor.
In the same vein, there's 'Old Friend' which was Roger's solo tribute to Freddie. Where 'Only the Good...' rips out your heart and kicks it, 'Old Friend' elicits a gentle smile, an affectionate remeberence of an old and treasured friend.
saddest tribute to any band member from the rest of his bandmates that was his family...rip Freddie you brought a lot of smiles and tears from all...thank you...
Such a beautiful tribute. After the Ballet for Life performance, Brian recounted that John told him, “I can never do this again, I can’t do this.” Roger’s song Old Friends is very sweet. They grew up together in that they became a unit enduring many ups & downs. In interviews they all emphasized how important the band was. Roger once remarked, “It’s the anchor I don’t know what life would be without it”
I cry every time I see this video. Poor John it had to be so tough for him he actually dropped his guitar at the end of the day it was John's last video
Don't know if you heard the last few words saying "Brian..relax". Understandably very hard for the guys after walking off that sound stage. And just as you said, "It is a sad thing".
Im 61 now. Was lucky to see queen in late 1975, just after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody!! Their music hits home now, more than ever before. Timeless!!!! God Bless Mr Balsara!!!!
Maybe other subscribers has mentioned it but there is a "the making of" video where Brian explains the thoughts behind it. It also shows the crew that made the video incl. the producer who says "cut".
John’s last appearance. A Brian May composition. Would love you to react to Teo Torriatte which Brian also wrote and is a tribute to their Japanese fans. It’s beautiful and is not reacted to very often.
your are absolutly right! at the end of the video rudi dolezal spoke to brian to come down. in the making of "these are the days of our lives" you can see him. he is the one with the funny jacket and the long hair
Makes my cry! So, beautifully heartbreaking. Yes, Brian and Roger have wonderful voices. All three paying tribute to a loved partner! Yes! I mentioned to you on your previous reactions about Rudi Dolezal, the interviewer from 'Musical Prostitute" went on to direct/produce 13 of Queen's videos. (including this one.) That is his voice you hear.
The interviewer/ video director you are asking about is Rudi Dolezal. Fascinating guy, and he’s been sharing a lot of snippets of his work with Freddie/Queen, as he is currently working on a book. He has a RU-vid channel you might find interesting (as well as being quite active on FB and Instagram) : ru-vid.com/show-UCsaZF4OKvhtGmOxPJUsKLMg
Do Rogers tribute Ol Friends, Then Mother Love, last time Freddie sung in the studio, Brian wrote it & had to finish singing the song. Fred wasn’t able to come back to finish it.✨Brian & Roger have good solo work. Rogers band for awhile was The Cross & Brian’s was The Brian May Band. 👑
Sensational! In case your wondering, the illustration is of Icarus from Greek mythology. I liked that lyrical reference-"their only flying too close to the sun." I agree, Brian May and Roger Taylor are such beautiful but criminally underrated singers. This song truly showed that Freddie was really like a brother to them, not just their frontman. The looks on their faces, in their voices and in every note their sorrow is clear and were doing all they can to keep it together and not break down crying, (not that I'd blame them if they did). The champagne glass on the piano was in homage to Freddie who would toast his audiences with champagne sometimes during special gigs. Last year, Brian and his wife went on pilgrimage to Zanzibar, where Freddie was born to retrace his childhood steps and see his old house, his old school and even the hospital where Freddie and his sister were born. In case your wondering, bass player John Deacon took Freddie's death the hardest. After making this video and recording the song, John participated in a Queen collaboration with Bejart- Ballet for life in honor of Freddie, who was a huge lover of Ballet and opera. While he's basically involved in the band's finances, he's now basically a recluse.
Not completely true. I would personally say John was voted out of the band. They often voted on things. Jim Beach inherited Freddie's vote in the band. John started making public statements about how he did not agree with some of their choices and decisions, and he "retired" soon after that in 1997. But there is a story of John working alongside Mike Spencer for a remix of Under Pressure as late as 1999, they created a new remix for the Greatest Hit III album. According to Mike Spencer, John was very amicable and enthusiastic about the project. But the remix was rejected by Brian and Roger, and it was not chosen for the album. www.queenonline.com/features/queen-remixed-mike-spencer-fan-feature-by-adam-unger John actually went to see the We Will Rock You theater show, but he had no interest in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. So make of that what you will.
They were family. Each lyric is from a line from one ofheir songs. For example, Hand above the Water relates to Freddie Statue in Montreux. . Etc. They also dedicated this to Princess Diana who died in 1997 and Jonny Versche.
I recommended. Thanks for watching. Brian wrote this, sent it to Roger who stuck it in a drawer. Got it out about a year later and called Brian and said we gotta do this. The champagne glass on the piano is for Freddie. If you listen very close at the end you can hear someone say Brian relax.
Roger did Old Friends too dedicated to Freddie. They lived together before Smile and Queen. They ran a Market stall together. This is so sad for all of them when they have probably spent more time together than with their own families over 21 years.
Roger said somewhere that his memories of Freddie are black and white because he took all the colors with him when he died. Jim (Freddie's partner) called Freddie and Roger soulmates.
In our solar system, the planet closest to the sun is Mercury. Much of the lyrical content of the song, especially Roger's part, are snippets taken from other Queen songs. You will recognize some of them if you listen with that in mind.
It's never "too early" and it's never too late! Even as a huge Queen fan, I haven't followed them in a "linear pattern". Besides, Freddie would no doubt encourage spontaneity :D Enjoy all of Queen's music - in any order!
This song always gets me in the Grinchy parts. My husband died when he was 34 and while I know it is common to idealize dead people, it's hard to idealize Mike without most of it being accurate. I don't kid myself, he definitely had his faults, but they weren't serious enough to exclude from his life story, either.
“A hand above the water, an angel reaching for the sky” …referring to the statue of Freddie on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Beautiful lyrics and tribute. Thank you, Queen.💜
Just seeing John breaks my heart. Knowing this was it for him. John was so close to Freddie. Keep searching their music. You should start from their beginning to see how they grow. But thats the way you want to do its cool.
Love your reaction....I was lucky to see them in Oakland in 1980, my 2 year old grandson already knows We Will Rock You...Every time I see this, I cry. We witnessed greatness....The piano in this video was Freddie's Road Piano...XO
such a wonderful tribute to Freddie. It always brings a tear to my eyes. the line, a hand above the water - is like the statue of Freddie in Montreaux at the water...and the line that Roger sings, 'another tricky situation' is the first line in "It's A Hard Life" song. just never gets old.
I hear the "cut" at the end and then either the same voice or maybe another voice says, "Brian, relax." That's what it sounds like. I wonder why Brian was being told to relax. I know there's a "behind the scenes" version showing the making of this video but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
Too start with this song was for Freddie, however when they got around to recording it in 97 friends of the group had passed away from The Princess of Wales to a few others so it became more about all the younger people dying young, and John withdrew from public life completely after this,I don't think he ever recovered from Freddie dying
I love the way you watch every bit of the videos and ,react to everything ,can you react to one vision ,live at Wembley ,it's said to be based round Martin Luther king's I have a dream speech ,it's a great performance ,thanks ,stay safe fr Liverpool uk
Please react to QUEEN + Adam Lambert i want it all Live 2014 Japan - here ON RU-vid! Very best Live Video of them without Freddie. Brian and Roger's skills are just perfect - still today
Poor John, he looks devasted in this video. .. he went into a deep depression after Freddie's passing and almost 30 years later still hasn’t recovered. ''He felt blinded by the glow of Brian Roger and Freddie and only Freddie could understand him, that's why he had a depression after his death. He didn't see a future for him in the band without Freddie. He's just living a private life. His wife sometimes tells callers to their home that he 'doesn't live here', or that she 'doesn't know where he is'. Guitarist Brian adds: 'It's his choice. He doesn't contact us. John was quite delicate all along.' Indeed his lifestyle in South London is so reclusive and quiet - and his attitude to fame so hostile - that the band apparently don't expect him to respond when they contact him. '' (source: Dailymail-uk)
Sad about this video and my overly long reply, but on a happy note, just remembered Freddie’s response to an interviewer’s question “do you argue with each other?” Freddie laughed and said “yes - we fight over hairdryers darling!” So Freddie - always so funny! 🤣❤️😇💥
