The "vocal harmonies" in the Rain Down section, are played on the melatron, by Jonny. It's a 60s era psychedelic instrument that uses taped sounds that you change the pitch of with the keyboard; in this case a choral arrangement, but any instrument or sound could be taped and looped for the melatron. It's a precursor o the synthesizer, but analog.

It was used in a lot of psychedelic songs but it's not a psychedelic instrument. The kinks used it on village green😂

Many people have been asking you to react to OK Computer, and I agree but if you want an incredible song, I highly recommend “There, There”. It is quite literally one of the most perfect rock songs I’ve heard. Thom Yorke supposedly cried when they completed this song because it’s the closest they’ve gotten to perfection.

this was their debut of the song, just before their seminal performance at Glastonbury. It's fresh, new. That pause afterwards, before the audience breaks into applause is so telling.

You are kind of right about the 80's. Punk at the time was very much against the virtuosity, and giant ego's of the current and past rock music and instead went for a more visceral, raw, garage sound. Most of the other music was pop oriented and bands trying to get onto MTV.There was still good music, but you really had to search for it because it had zero main-stream accessibility.

@SyedRewinds Het you got around to it, fantastic. Yeah seeing it live if's different. There's this energy about it, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. After he finishes the guitar solo the lead guitarist on the right of the screen steps away from the front of the stage to play the keyboard for the melodic bit in the middle of the song. He quickly has to step away from the keyboard to the stage front as the music goes back to guitar quick. They do over an hour of music on that show and you can see it all on RU-vid. I knew you would appreciate the live aesthetic of this band. Thanks Syed.

As a proponent of Grunge, it really did feel like rock stagnated during the 80s and was reborn with Nirvana in the 90s. That's what made Grunge and Alt Rock in general so exciting. That said, the "stagnation" was an illusion of sorts - 80s "rock" was dominated by Stadium Rock (eg Van Halen) which sort of degenerated into scores of identical hair metal bands. Great if you were into that sort of thing, but lethal if you weren't. Looking back on the decade now, all the real innovative, creative energy was going into New Wave (The Cars, The Police) starting in the late 70s and then into late 80s underground Alt and Indie Rock (The Pixies, R.E.M.) - which would birth Grunge and continue to carry the torch after Grunge burnt out and transmuted into mainstream post-grunge and NuMetal. (That is to say, if you want to find where interesting stuff is happening sonically in rock after the late 90s you'd have to look to the indie scene, in my opinion.)

Old Geezer here. You're totally right (from my perspective). I was at Uni in mid 90s and there was a kind of generational backlash to a lot of 80's music (hate your parent's music right?) Kids wanted to get raw again with guitars....grunge... don't smile, be introverted etc. very different to a lot of 80's synth, polished ballads. I'm probably not making sense but that's how it felt anyway

I saw Radiohead on the tour for this album, around 97. It was insane!! I literally cried it was such an amazing experience. I saw them again 20 years later and I was stunned that they'd gotten even better. Their RU-vid page is amazing, they post videos of their entire concerst if you're interested.

@@pauljames2017 Precisely, and if I recall correctly, they got it (indirectly) from either Pink Floyd, or The Beatles, so it likely had all the same sounds recorded to it that the original melatrons came with; usually choral, string section, horn section, pipe organ and woodwinds.

Indeed. Dave was I think going over the most important moments in rock history for him, and one of them was him witnessing this performance. He said this song was the beginning of a musical revolution. I also thought something back in 97 hearing OK Computer... but strangely enough, in hindsight it feels like OK Computer put an end to rock music. There are other great rock bands that came after (White Stripes, The Strokes...) but they were in a sense doing call backs to older rock styles. Some of Radiohead definitely has some Pink Floyd influence (the song Lucky in particular), but most of it seems completely innovative and fresh. The production alone on OKC is nuts. Suffice to say, rock didn't really come back. Not only did hip hop maintain its grip on the mainstream, but Radiohead, the so-called saviors of rock, went off and made Kid A, an album based around avoiding every rock trope possible. I really don't know if a great complex rock record like OKC will be a mainstream success ever again.

It's called a Mellatron the Beatles used it a fair amount and a lot of prog bands used to as well. Radiohead refuses to use ANY prerecorded stuff if they do record and loop something they record it DURING the song it's insane.

Perhaps the best thing about Radiohead is that none of there records sound the same but it unmistakably is still their overall sound they really remind me of the Beatles in the way they evolved their sound.

Great reaction as always - this performance really shows just how good a band they are. One of the few acts carrying the torch for this kind of complex, layered alt/progressive rock in the 80s was Talk Talk. Their album The Colour of Spring is pretty much flawless and is widely regarded as platform on which bands like Radiohead built their sound. Talk Talk are a lot more mellow and closer to pop than most of Radiohead’s stuff but the arrangement and instrumentation is first class. I’d suggest the track Life’s What You Make It as a good place to start if you’re interested

I hadn't seen this live performance before but it's great. I don't know if you saw the incredible movie called There will be Blood, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and an all around stellar cast with great writing and great cinematography and great subject matter. But at any rate I don't know if it was his first but I want to say it was the first for Thom to score a truly big movie. And being a musician and a composer myself, and I have worked with some really modern music and played with dissonance a lot and all that, I absolutely loved the score and it drew a ton of attention. Most of it isn't even what you would think of as very melodic, it's just abstract and textural but it is so artfully done. It's so creative. Love it.

@@nickgoodson9918 like I say, I have played around with that kind of thing as a composer before and so maybe I was really receptive to it but the movie itself was just absolutely fantastic and I really believe that that score was 100% perfect for it. Especially when they're out in the desert or in those early scenes, and you just have this kind of sound coming out of nowhere and it takes forever to grow louder and louder and louder and then it coincides with something happening and it's loud and frenzied and dissonant. It's incredibly creative but you can tell it comes from somebody that knows what they are doing.

The 80s innovated in different ways. Especially music from the UK. They weren't going back to the roots (but some were)... I don't know, it's like they all fell in love with Bowie, but each a different album and three new sounds were born from each of those albums. I don't even know where to begin. :-)

I feel like music, with a few exceptions, did go through a lull in the 80s. But at that time I was exploring blue grass, zydeco and classical music. It wasn't until the 90s that I returned to alternative rock music.
