Radiohead is one of the great rabbit holes in all of music. The territory covered is mind blowing. They have been essentially there or four different bands with the constant being Thom Yorke's voice. How many different ways he can communicate this feeling. Through rock, through electronica, through noise, through computerized/programmed beats and instruments, etc. Before you go further I would listen to Fake Plastic Trees from this album. It's still, in my opinion, their most beautiful/emotional song. It's kind of where they went from being a good band to making true art.

Yeah, great comment and perspective. They're 3rd greatest band ever for me, behind Pink Floyd and The Beatles. They can cover absolutely any style of music and do it exceptionally. That's just one thing I love about them.

Radiohead is my favorite band, their albums from The Bends on are just an amazing journey and evolution. Also, they usually have a pretty melancholy sound but this song is one of the most depressing lol

Maybe Thom doesn't have Marvin Gaye's voice like you say... but he has incredible control over his voice. Especially on later albums he does so many little nuanced rhythms and vocal tricks. His vibrato control is pretty remarkable too. I think having precision control of whatever voice you were born with is easily as important as having a powerful voice to begin with. Then there are the choice of notes and songwriting aspects which is where Thom truly shines. I like this old Radiohead... but for me they just kept getting better and better. They removed themselves so much from this 90's rock sound later on... you could barely even call them rock anymore. Love their progression as a band.

Always excited to see human beings have their souls torn out by Thom for the first time
@guitaroffthecuff-davids5528
One of my favorites by them. This was so early in their "album" career. But the album has so much depth. You can almost hear the sound of OK Computer coming together. They don't evolve. The level up. Video game style. They get skill points to spend to improve their abilities. This is RPG ROCK. They develop their craft, and don't hesitate to critique themselves to get even better. Thom has shared a lot of his thoughts about how he has learned from previous creations - both the good and the "needs improvement". They love getting better for the sake of the music and creativity. His singing style has been so fine tuned, that I don't think there is anybody who you would confuse his voice with. Assuming you know Radiohead's music, of course. Love what you do. Stay awesome!

"Be a world child, form a circle, before we all go under" I think this is a literal reference to flower-child hippies in a circle. Find peace before we destroy each other. Hopefully we're not too late.. Now, how he meant it in the song? I have no idea.

The Bends is still in my top ten straight-ahead rock albums of all time. Incredibly satisfying melodies and chord progressions that you can't quite predict but are soothed and stimulated by. And their production quality has always felt 10-15 years ahead of their peers. This song was a hint at what was to come...and what came next was revolutionary. Here's your "fun" fact: This came out in 1995. Thom Yorke changed lyrics to the song Sulk because it had references to a gun and they wanted to be sensitive to the recent suicide of Kurt Cobain. Thom Yorke definitely took up the mantle of melancholy, extremely reluctant celebrity who's not interested in the nonsense when Kurt died. Intensely personal often snarky, incisive lyrics. The connection that you felt is real. (Also...they are elder Gen X, I believe.)

Radiohead is a spiritual journey, their ability to convey emotions is awesome and awe inspiring so to speak, Thom gives us a piece of his soul with every performance. Radiohead is great enough to be up there with zeppelin, the Beatles, the who, pink floyd they are just as good as the bands I listed above.....

I grew up with the “legacy “ bands you mentioned. But being a newcomer to this band, I would say that, although it’s a different genre, I would say it’s as good as Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. And although Zep and Floyd are my two top bands, I have developed a HUGE respect for 90’s music the past few years….,even though I’m in my 70’s.

As much as I love this song and find it rather epic, it's only a taste of things to come. They perfect this layered, almost symphonic/angelic/meditative/melancholy/haunting/ethereal sound in Pyramid Song, How to Disappear Completely and Motion Picture Soundtrack. These are songs to be experienced, not just heard. Another great and lesser known group to check out is the Icelandic group Sigur Ros, I would describe their music in much the same way only more hypnotic, and for the first timer I suggest starting with their track Svefn-g-englar, it's gorgeous. These songs are best when you just kick back. close your eyes. and let your mind paint pictures.

Sometimes a lyricist taps into the universal stream and takes stock of the human condition. This is one of those songs. Inspired by Okri’s The Famished Road (1991), Street Spirit looks into the dark heart of humanity and how the Devil is walking among us, penetrating the hearts of children and robbing them of their souls. Perhaps Okri saw it in his culture in the post-colonial era, and Yorke was seeing it in the ways British society was devolving under the strain of alienation, civic disorder, materialism, and social breakdown. There is nothing cryptic about the lyrics, especially when looking back in the review mirror while careening on a road to nowhere: in the backseat sit ghosts of the past reminding us that they are ghosts of the future. Okri wrote that our greatest fear is love, not death; that death knows the answer to life’s riddles and that love is a riddle; but if we do not immerse ourselves in love we will repeat the search for love as a riddle until we arrive at no answer. In this terrible paradox, the sins of the world recycle with gathering force until “People who look like human beings are not human beings. Strange people are amongst us. We must be careful. Our lives are changing. Our gods are silent. Our ancestors are silent. A great something is going to come from the sky and change the face of the earth.” Immerse your soul in love. If we are not careful and self correcting, the rats will truly inherit the earth.
@gogyoo
@gogyoo Год назад
I have a bittersweet feeling about "Immerse yourself in love". On the one hand, being at the end of the song, it looks like the moral of the story, like in a fable. At the very least an injunction to make life as bearable as possible. On the other end, Yorke could be trolling us i.e. don't kid yourself, the meaning of life is suffering. It reminds me of people quoting Philip Larkin's beautiful verse "What will survive of us is love". It probably fills their hearts with peace, but they often omit the preceding verse "to prove / Our almost-instinct almost true:".

Just a slight correction, Radiohead and the 90's would be Millennials and not Gen-Z, When the corporatisation of media took over in the 80's and our youth was built around toy commercials, and corporate "greed is good" mentality, we found ourselves profoundly disconnected from society, though we still had hope for the future (With the tech revolution and fall of the Berlin wall), hence the melancholy...I don't even know what to say about Gen-Z, born into a 24/7 social media technopoly...I just can't fathom that kind of pressure...

90's were Millennials not Gen Z'ers :P but yeah, isolation was a big part of the attitude being expressed in an extremely angsty, in-your-face, I'll-say-what-I-want-&-You-Deal-With-It decade of life that got completely turned around to it's opposite towards the end of the 2010's where everyone is offended by everything........let me tell you how shocking that transition was having lived in both times hahaha.
