People hate what they don’t understand. In order to hate people you have to first dehumanize them. If you want to learn about a person or a people the best way is to break bread with them. Meet their wives and bounce their children on your knee. Hold their babies in your arms. Swap stories with their grandparents. You come to see that people are people. I have, in my life, had the opportunity to meet many kinds of people from many places. Palace or cottage. City or village. People are all basically the same. Teenagers are rebellious and flirtatious. Young parents are wrapped in their own little worlds of mom, dad and baby. Little children are playful. Babies laugh that same wonderful way every place in world. Old people are wise if a tad grouchy. Older women keep an eye on the younger women. The young women do their best to escape. Young men puff out their chests and show how cool and brave they are. Dads just want to drink their coffee, tea, beer, gin and tonic, wine and have a little peace and quiet and maybe a nice game of draughts, gin, darts, go, checkers, dominoes or chess. Moms keep it all together. Once you begin to find acceptance they all become your family. Then it is damn hard to drop bombs on them.

I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. This was interesting to learn a bit about DAM and Tamer's views even though I don't agree with him so much. A friend of mine was hoping to do a doco on the punk scene out here which would also be interesting. As far as I am aware, there is no such thing as Palestinian punk, although a lot of the Israelis in the punk scene are pro Palestine and the events/shows are often posted in both Hebrew and Arabic despite really only Israelis turning up to them. Some punk bands do have people who are either in the army or have been in the army, all with different views on the war. I'm hoping to see something similar throughout this series.
