ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Many doctors still believe that arthroscopic surgery for hip impingement is the only solution for people with hip pain and FAI bone shapes. Jordan spent years frustrated with ineffective physical therapy before finally getting surgery for femoroacetabular impingement. And the results of the surgery were not at all what he expected.

They aren't demonizing surgery. They are raising awareness about the risks and pitfalls associated with the arthroscopic surgery for FAI so that those who haven't had the surgery can exhaust every option before going under the knife to better ensure that the surgery is warranted. They are also providing hope for people like me, who did get the surgery and are significantly WORSE off because of it. I was never offered a "solution" or treatment for FAI other than surgery and cookie cutter physical therapy - -which failed, so I gave into surgery eventually. The surgery not only didn't silve the probllem it was supposed to correct, but it also caused additional mechanical problems and lasting pain (my surgery was 9 years ago). These guys are a much needed voice attempting to balance out the otherwise one-sided opinion being offered on this issue by virtually all doctors, and with poor scientific basis (i.e. SURGERY SURGERY SURGERY!!!)

I really hate that “specialists” don’t look at the whole person, the whole body. And then that trickles down to the PT’s approach. I decided to start to work on my whole body, upper and lower muscles and also full body mobility. I still have hip issues so I also target exercise and mobility in that area, but it is greatly improved. And upright Health videos are a godsend. Thank you

Great video and motivation!! I been following Upright health, Matt and the other 2 guys I forgot there name and been having some improvements after a 3 year battle from stepping off a truck at work missing the step and jamming my hip causing all sorts of pain and muscle imbalances... I wish you guys worked in Michigan I would pay what I needed to get back to normal! I done had prolotherapy shots, Tumeric, fish oil pills and etc, which stop a lot of the pain from shooting down my leg and in my butt Glute muscle but still get pain in Glute, Low back, hip and ALOT OF HIP TIGHTNESS,.. But I refuse too get surgery for I know there is HOPE!! I’m going to get the FAI program just need time to invest due to my Busy work schedule... Never thought a miss landing could cause this much of a life change! I can’t do a beginners pigeon pose at all due to the FAI Impingement and Tightness

Well I’m crippled can’t walk with a huge lump on side of hip and buttock. The very bottom part of my groin pops hard and loud 100 times a day so what do I do. The pain is so bad I can’t sit, walk far, lay or sleep and driving has become excruciating. I have been like this 18 years made my birth of my child excruciating and now I almost can’t care for her.

I've had this for 3 years. I've spent thousands on various therapies and treatments and it hasn't fixed the issue. Some days I cannot fully weight-bear. I have to click out my hip every day. I rigidly stuck to the physio I was given, and this hasn't fixed it. I've tried so many different RU-vid video exercises, which can give relief but it's shortlived. Since realising I need to really focus more on my glutes (which I had been, but not enough) it has improved things, but I'm still not too good. It is still a real issue in my life. It's really affected my mood. I've always been a very active person and this has restricted me so much. I had to give up nursing as I just can't be on my feet all day, and I cannot bend around. My hip twangs if I bend forward or when I stand from sitting. It aches and feels like my hip locks up. It's really been a miserable 3 years, but I try to keep upbeat, as that's my personality. It has prevented me from doing so much, it's really held me back. That's been really tough. However, I'll never go under the knife. I have heard from so many people (many I personally know, and some I've read about) and how it's made them worse. I believe this young man and I believe surgery is not always the answer. Nor is steroid shots. Steroids eat tendons for lunch. I do think it's about finding the right physio regime and sticking to it day-in, day-out. As tedious as that is, it's got to be better than surgery. I hope this young man is finding life rosier now and he's really found a solution. I'm sadly still working on mine 🙄🥺 But for the past 3 days I've been really working on my glutes and core, so well see!

Exact thing happened to me with surgery. I reported pain to my surgeon after surgery too and he did the same tests and said “see you’re cured”. Didn’t take into account that i was still in pain. Wish I’d never had it. My hip and FAI got so much worse afterwards. I’m in constant pain and have spent 10 years post surgery trying to figure out what is wrong with me. Going to give the FAI fix a program a try and hoping it’s not too late!

thanks man i really hate when ppl go for: u dont need surgery. If you really thing that something like that can be treadet without correction (of course not every case needs surgery) then please get your doctor degree and proove everybody wrong but dont come up as a well informed normal person putting yourself over the official knowlage provided by doctors, who spend their life searching for solutions for commen problems. Telling ppl to not have surgery could end up with worse problems cause its damaging the trust in the healthsystem and if ppl trust ppl of the internet more then their doctors thinks might get way worse.

I have an FAI right hip 62 degrees and labral tear. I have an upcoming surgery Jan 9th. I am not sure if surgery is the right decision. The reason I am probably going to go with surgery is because I am told that it could help prevent hip deterioration and osteoarthritis. I am not sure whats true. Pain seems to be getting better with PT.

@@ytbasketbalacct Hey there I haven't had the surgery yet. My right was bothering me and then the left started. I am tentatively having it in April. I know I want to do the hip preservation surgery - the Question being whether now or in 6 months. I am currently a great candidate, but waiting until a few things change in my life would be much more ideal. Recovering and rehabbing alone is relatively tough. On the flipside I am worried about my situation and damage worsening and not being as good a candidate for surgery.

Is it possible that he is now getting better results from excersise since he actually did the surgery? He Said he did not get any prior to it.
@Uprighthealth
@Uprighthealth 6 лет назад
To answer your question, who knows? We can't turn back time. What we do know is that in working with him, the way that he exercised pre-surgery (to attempt to improve his condition) was inadequate. He said something to the effect of "I went through the motions and didn't really know what I was doing". He showed us what exercises he had tried and, more importantly, HOW he performed them. And it was NOT executed in a manner which we would have said "okay, yes, do it exactly like that and you will see results."
@Uprighthealth
@Uprighthealth 6 лет назад
Another point: would there be any reason at all to believe the surgery had any kind of positive effect given that his pain stayed exactly the same?
@fredriksingh9921
@fredriksingh9921 6 лет назад
Upright Health Did his mobility increase? Sounded like he did not have typical mechanical impingement in the flexion test after the surgery. Also im curious when he had his hip pain?
@fredriksingh9921
@fredriksingh9921 6 лет назад
Also I am asking becuause he said he did not get better previous to surgery. That is why i am asking if that couls have been the benefit of the surgery: creating mechanical conditions for his hip muscles and joint to start working properly. Could this be true?
@Uprighthealth
@Uprighthealth 6 лет назад
Unlikely. As described in the video, he had ZERO improvement after surgery as well -despite trying many things. He had trouble engaging his ab muscles and that apparently caused trouble with hip muscle engagement. Nobody could figure out how to get his abs or hip muscles to fire. Once we got his abs on, he was able to get hip muscles on. Surgery had nothing to do with that. The larger point is the hip flexion test is totally pointless. None of the special tests for hip pain have any correlation to hip pathology - regardless of presence of pain. Those special tests are insanely misleading - and it's ridiculous to make judgments on the need for or success of a surgery based on a range of motion test that has no correlation to anything.
