Oh man, what a blast I had working on that roof! It was only one and a half to two years ago I would of been petrified of working on roofs, but reading up and gaining knowledge along with working alongside James and Dan and constantly asking questions has given me the confidence I need! Thank you lads, and thank you SkillBuilder!

As a person who had to become, out of necessity, a competent amateur builder, with a room in my house literally dedicated to a library, shelves of literature for 1700's to modernity, I haven't learned as much or as quickly from watching you Ian, Dan, James, Robin and of course Rodger, than I have practically from reading those books, as non professional builder, I cannot tell you fellas how inspiring it is to watch these videos and admire the care, professionalism, consideration and passion you all have for fine craftsmanship, and each other, I have spent 30 years pursuing those same craftsmanship levels in the film industry as a sculptor and painter in the FX game and I did not expect to see the same level of craft in the construction trade. You have given many the confidence and raised the bar of quality we should all expect. you certainly have inspired me to "Do it right once" Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge.

What is it about roofing carpentry that we all love? I'm a chippy/General builder but if it was up to me I'd primarily focus on roofs. I mainly get second fix type work, which is okay, but I always have the impression that I'm only there coz the customer doesn't wanna buy their own tools. When I do get a roof its mainly bog standard lean-to types. Nothing complex and interesting.

Are all the commentary British? I'm from across the Pond. Carpenter for 40 plus years. Don't they have a job pricing scheme over there called Cost Plus? That would be the cost of materials and labor, plus a specified percentage for overhead and profit. It's written into the contract so the builder is protected from price increases and if the price of material goes down, (as if), good for the client. New subscriber. So far, I really like these videos.

I'm gearing myself up to ring around all the jobs I have booked in to tell them I can no longer honour the original quotes. Prices of materials are beyond stupid. . The last two weeks I've been working for less than nothing a day simply through rising prices. A simple feather edge fence I priced at just over £600 only two months ago came in at just under £1500. I cannot afford this. I'm not one of these RU-vidr tradesmen that get away with massive prices. If I'm not competitive, I don't work. The world they want to build back better doesn't include small independent tradesman. Especially the kind of demographic that the trades predominantly make up. Good luck lads. I'm not feeling very optimistic.
@stakkerhmnd
@stakkerhmnd 2 года назад
Which RU-vidr tradesmen are "getting away with massive prices"? I think I should become a RU-vidr tradesman if what you say is happening. That fence price, was it for just one side of the fence at £600? Because if you do both sides it will be £1,200.

Yes indeed....I completely agree - this current material shortage/price increased situation is fucking crazy!!! I have been in the trade (carpenter) for past 27 years and have had a Travis account from the start. This week I bought 8 number lengths of 2.4 x 4"X2" and 2 number sheets of 18mm shutter ply and cost over £165!!!!! 😱 - total madness!!! - feel like giving up for 6 months: telling Dr I'm stressed and getting some of the money I've spent years paying into back!!!

Good looking work boys, and without taking anything away from you there are a few things that struck me. Attention to detail is one things and your cuts and joints look great, but they dont need to be great they just need to be good. There is a thing called allowable tolerance and on a roof the tolerance's can be greater than when your're hanging a door for instance. The mitre saw will make really accurate cuts but it's not the tool for cutting a roof, it's much much slower than an experienced chippy with a skilsaw. Birdsmouths on 6x2 can be cut right through without using a handsaw, the overcut will have no detrimental effect on the strength of the rafter, likewise if your cut's aren't perfect, it doesn't matter, it's a roof not a front door. Scarf cuts look impressive but a ridge can be joined with a simple angled cut, nailed or screwed with maybe a splice on each side, simple and quick and perfectly acceptable. I'm not saying you should be rough but it's hard enough making a job pay without wasting time on unnecessary details.

@haydnbrewer7426 2 года назад
How did you get on with the roof?
@nicksmith7612
@nicksmith7612 10 месяцев назад
If you measure rather than calculate your hips then…Cut a block of timber the same length as your HAP, butt it up with the edge of the wp on the corner and measure down to that (rather than the wp itself) thus gives you a much more accurate measurement for the length of your hip. Also if you mark both sides of your ridge plumb cut onto one side of your timber (2 plumb cut lines 45mm apart when using a normal treated 2” timber) then you can cut both cuts of your double bevelled ridge cut without flipping your timber over simply by flipping the bevel on your chopsaw or passing from the other side using a circular saw … still saves you flipping the timber over and therefore time

Rafael What you say is very interesting because it chimes with what some of our other American viewers say. It seems that in America there is an undercurrent of rigid conformity that is reinforced with low level intimidation. If a guy wants to wear work trousers (pants) with pockets on the outside he will be laughed off site by all the guys who think you have to wear regular jeans. Similarly the 'mafia' comes out in force if you are using the ' wrong' tool or driving the 'wrong' truck. If this is the case then it is similar to communist countries and seems to run counter to the spirit of "The land of the brave and the home of the free".

@@strongstories3183 Hello lc h, Hope all is going well. A good question which many a classical philosopher has pondered through the ages. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) examined your question from an epistemological perspective, yet many feel it wasn't entirely answered definitively. For example, Kant postulated that, "Genius is the ability to independently arrive at and understand concepts that would normally have to be taught by another person." Are you a genius? Considering you needed to seek an understanding of STAKKER it could be suggested that you aren't a genius. The latest philosophical research suggests that it's not actually possible for a mere mortal such as yourself to comprehend such aesthetical matters like "What are you [STAKKER] all about man?" To answer your second question, one could ask "Have you got too much hands on your times?"

"Using it the African way"????? As an African I"m not sure how to take this? Is it 'African' because it's 'backwards' and Africans are 'Backwards'? James? or, is it because Africans don't have hospitals so don't use tools correctly to minimise injury?? Roger? Either way - it cuts backwards like RACIST JOKING to me! Such a shame. I was a subscriber. I believe anyone can enjoy learning new skills, yes even Africans, and learn how to use tools correctly. I believe no builder in the UK started out knowing what they were doing but had to learn it and that any person of colour no matter where they are can also 'learn' the same skills! Perhaps it is implied in British builder culture that skill builder and diy is really only meant for 'white men'. God forbid Africans and black people in general and women start thinking they too can learn! Racist Jokes are unacceptable. You have lowered my expectations of the Skill Builder Chanel. I wonder what percentage of 'builders' in the UK think this type of joke is 'banter'?

Hi Philip, I’m sorry that you have been upset by that comment. It wasn’t a joke at all, I was told by someone many years ago that in Africa they use hand saws the opposite way around to how we use them and I have seen footage of it too. It was a genuine statement of what I believe to be fact. Nothing else.

Dry your eyes man, the lads were taking the piss out of the Irish as well. All in a Day's work, a bit of banter and some slagging, 👍🔨🇮🇪
