I'm not even mad that it's a Procreate knock off, we have been asking for YEARS for a Android version of Procreate, even in their FAQ it's a common question, on which they say, so far no plans but we'l see.. which basically is another way of saying ''nah, but to stop your questions we're going to give you vague hope''. So Kudos to HiPaint for at least supporting Android Users
But you have to consider that the app would need to be optimize for Android and for companies that aren't too big that can be difficult and every time that they make an update they would have to verify that it works correctly in two operating systems instead of one. For now I think that it is good that another company is making an app for Android rather than Savage Interactive so they don't have to split their efforts.
@@frijolitoandcuterice It's not that, it's how they are leaving a large user base stranded, fragmentation would only be a problem if drawing apps would work bad, but they all work great on Android, Clip Studio Paint being on of the best I find so far which I use on my S6 Lite, my brother has a Ipad Pro and when I draw I get exactly the same results on both platforms. Procreate is already complete enough to put focus on other platforms now. But the fact that they don't just shows how the Apple glorification and Android vilification is still being uphold by some companies. i really hope HiPaint hits off so I don't have to rely on companies who are deaf to people who appreciate their work but then don't even try to accommodate them.
@@kizanko I have a theory (and it is just that and I have no inside information) I have been waiting for so long for it to come to either windows or android, hell I'll even take it on mac at this point. But this app makes Apple so much money in Pro sales and they must know this. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a backdoor contract going on between them where apple slides them a set amount of money for them to not release on anything but iPads. The amount of people I know who have purchased an iPad and pencils just for this app. Me included who just bought an iPad pro and apple pencil on Friday after holding off for years.
I can confirm that the brush lag and the funny animation effect when using watercolor brush are OnePlus-specific issues. On Samsung Tab S8 Plus, it's butter smooth
Mad respect with HiPaint devs. Just like Krita, an alternative to Photoshop but focusing on drawing only not image editing. Krita UI is similar to Photoshop which is easy to use.
I have an S6 Lite, and gave this a quick test. 5 minutes in and it is my favorite art app I have tried on it. Fairly smooth performance and has the stuff I want for doodling on breaks at work.
Just tried it for the first time, been using Sketchbook for years and am really over its limitations. *I've never used Procreate. I completed a 5min rough portrait and it was so flawless to create. So glad that this app exists!
Hey thanks for the comparison. I recently entered the tablet space and have dabbled with multiple apps including Sketchbook (which I deemed the superior one of the bunch I used). Your comment is likely going to save me a lot of time. Cheers.
@@tcgdude Sketchbook was once the powerful competitor in Automotive and Graphic design studios to Photoshop but Autodesk got lazy. They killed SBP once and studios demanded it back - so Autodesk obliged but they didn't develop it. It still has a clean tablet oriented interface but that's about it - it stood still for the last 10-15 years.
I've always asked myself why Procreate doesn't want to bring itself to android 🤔 So it was just a matter of time until something like this would come 😀
@@the.artists.journey I expected it way earlier tbh. Usually, I'm not interested in Android tablets because the Apple app store is so much better for tablets but I love the S-Pen and this Procreate clone looks good.
@@apfelschorle1988 I see what you mean 😀 I've got myself a Samsung tablet first. But there wasn't anything as satisfying as procreate at that time. So I got myself an iPad 🙈 I think this is GREAT news for any Android tablet user! Of course there are many very good apps for drawing on android. But I am an absolute Procreate Fanboy and to have something THAT close for Android...very nice! I am happy for everyone. (Kinda sad for Procreate...because it feels like they've missed a chance now 🤷♂️. But who knows. Maybe this WILL force their hands!)
Now that you mentioned about HuionSketch, most of my artworks are done on that app and i loved it sooo much to the point where when the app didn't work anymore, i was so frustrated and annoyed. No other app made me so satisfied other than that and let me tell you this. HiPaint is LITERALLY HuionSketch. I guess they upgraded during the whole hiatus and funnily enough, i didnt realise how freaking similar huion sketch and procreate are until u mentioned it. So, thank you so much for reminding me about this app☺️
This. Because why would someone pay $800-1000 for a stupid tablet when there's $200 or cheaper competitor tablets. So how do you get people to buy your overpriced bs? With app exclusivity.
Oh, for sure, it's crazy that android is so bad for drawing. Most apps are not supported on the Samsung big boy Sad for us as consumer, but if they don't want android, I won't want them. And neither should u 😂 fricking elitists, eat the rich and 2-1 laptops 4eva
@@0Milena_aneliM0 I have a superior experience using Android than using iPad Also, newer Samsung tablets come with a stylus and a keyboard with touchpad, so its basically 2 in 1 And imagine buying an iPad for $900 and buying an stylus for the same price, thats just waste of money
This app used to be Huion Sketch app and they took it down from the store and hand it over to a new developer team. They kept the UI. So hopefully they continue improving the app. So far they are responding to people's feedbacks. They released the app hush hush. Only know about it like awhile back in january from word of mouth.
I tried Huion Sketch when it was still out, but quickly noticed it was taken from the appstore. I realized through research that they were better developing it. So, I have been awaiting it's rearival for some time and I'm so glad to know it's back!
@@Allthingshamster yea the original version can't compete with tons of drawing apps out there. So its a good move they handed it over to another dev to actively develop it.
After months and months of searching I finally decided to go with a Samsung Tab S8+, mainly because of your reviews. I love it and Clip Studio Paint is amazing. But there was always a tiny little voice in my head screaming for Procreate (because there are so many videos about it and looks so cool). And now we got it on Android?!?! Incredible! I'm downloading it right now =)) Have a nice week and thank you for another great video! =)
@@nascentnaga I can't abide CSP or Krita on tablet. They have put zero effort into optimising for the tablet ecosphere. If this app is as good as Procreate, I don't mind paying.
Procreate is literally the only reason why i bought ipad at all, why the hell can’t anything on android just make an app that can support custom brushes
Infinite Painter supports custom brushes. In fact. Many people download their customized brushes. There's literally tens of thousands of customized brushes that you can pick from. It's kind of crazy. This his a "copy" brush feature on it so you can go in and customize what ever brush you want, save it, and rename it just like on Infinite Painter.
I got the drawing class a few days ago and have gotten up to day 10 so far but so far am loving it and is super useful and teaching me things I never would have thought of on my own. Absolutely worth the money!
honestly pretty impressed with the app, especially with the brushes and the reference tool, which i use a lot. its my second favourite implementation of references behind ibis paint x, which is still my go to app. i wish this new hi paint app includes text input (for comic writing and meme making), use of the button on the s pen to erase or toggle eraser (if they can do the thing where u hold it to erase like native samsung apps, that would be amazing), better timelapse tool (seems like it glitched in the video but they'll probably fix that), comic panel dividers (like ibis paint x and medibang paint), and lot more customization settings in general. looks pretty minimal/lacking for now, but im sure theyll add more. very excited to see how this develops
Haven't tried out the other things but it does have use of the s pen to toggle the eraser, it's hold just like notes. So far I've only looked through the brushes but it's really nice so far
I still prefer Ibis paint x on using reference since I sometimes use more than one reference on the little mini window which is a bit of an inconvenience for me having to pull up the gallery everytime to change the reference. It also doesn't have blending modes as far as I know which I used regularly but I'm pretty excited to see what they're going to bring in the future.
Same here and I've tried Procreate in the past and found out that I loved brushes very much and that one can create totally new brush (not a feature in Ibis Paint unfortunately). However Procreate had quite a few IMHO annoying features... Really curious how will this app deal with them!
If the reason that Procreate didn't come to Android was actually not being financially feasible I wouldn't mind. But we all know there's a huge Apple exclusivity money being fed behind the scenes. I own a Android Tablet but I'll probably still buy an iPad for the 3D functions from Procreate+Nomad Sculpt as well as Cozy Blanket (which is developed on Godot and has 0 reasons not to be on Android, but what can I do).
Dude it even simulates pressure when you draw with ur finger and press hard on the screen 😭✨ I'll see if that feature is on the ipad too or just android this is so cool
Note to Procreate.... This is what you get when you completely ignore a HUGE potential userbase because you are steadfastly positioned in a particular OS due to some weird ideology. You have the right to make whatever business decisions you want, I won't argue with that...but I applaud the developers for this HiPaint for seeing the huge and OBVIOUS opportunity to capitalize on the shortsightedness of another company. I don't dislike Procreate at all OR their amazing development team. I just think they made a bit of a blunder when making the decision (and they certainly did make a conscious decision) to basically leave a huge potential customer base (and revenue stream) on the table. In another way, the Procreate team should be flattered that their product was good enough to be replicated. This happens all of the time. Windows/Android users rejoice!
I'm really happy with Ibis Paint (especially because I bought the, Non X, version). But I have been wanting to use Procreate So HiPaint would be the better option for me... Since I basically abandoned Apple... 5 years ago? I think? Edit: So I tried using HiPaint on my tablet, and... I think I'm gonna stick with Ibis Paint. Mainly 'Cause - More options for canvas size. I know you can just manually change the size in both. But I like that Ibis has more presets (I personally use a4 and/or a5. Depending on if I'm doing a regular drawing, or a reference sheet) - Reference window, can also reference canvas - plus and minus buttons for things like changing the brush size - Have to tap out of a menu, before being able to draw (this one is really just a personal preference thing) - Doesn't lag, when pinching and zooming (I honestly don't know if it's 'Cause my tablet is from the A line, instead of the S line. Or it's just how the app is. But it was really annoying. And, actually the reason why I went back to Ibis)
Honestly I still prefer Infinite Painter for Android. I'm really used to it even though I miss the paint drop ink option (they only have bucket). But I really like the fingers shortcuts to increase or decrease brush sizes on Infinite Painter. If Hi Paint gets more features like Procreate has, perhaps I'll give it a go.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 omg same?? i've been contacting the developer but they have no solution either and keep saying "there is no way painter crash blah blah blah" when my tab s7 is brand new and other art apps works just fine 😒😒 weird thing is, it was normal when it's still trial but after i purchased, it started to crash and i can't do undo/redo with gestures. so i don't use it after i purchased..... maybe we should try hipaint 😂
That´s it. The only thing that had me still considering buying an iPad to start drawing was Procreate. So tomorrow, I´m getting my new Android tablet and, hopefully, never have to look back to Apple´s ecosystem.
@@shaniep4358 ofc.. huion sketch isn't available anymore when we email them they say use hipaint instead. so maybe they sold it to another company and that is hipaint now
It works great, but it has a unique issue. I found when I make fast strokes, the curve has bumps in it. Like there are not enough points in the stroke, as if some made a bad job with the path tool. However as someone who doesn't like realistic brush engines, this app is great.
If you have a case/cover that is magnetic, and you fold the cover behind the tablet, it can mess up your brush strokes. I thought my S7+ was broken, but then I tried drawing without the case and it didn't have the bump in the line anymore.
I'm always eager to check out new apps to explore what's available, so I'm eager to see how this app performs! Been tinkering around with ClipStudio Paint lately so I'm open to something else.
So if this was originally Huion Sketch... Is Huion still developing it? Or did they abandon it and some other team has taken up the mantle? I remember early versions of Huion Sketch were okay, but it really felt like a tech demo more than a robust drawing app. But Huion still supports Android on their tablets, so maybe they're still trying to make a push for drawing on Android to be more viable?
i think you nailed with with your last sentence. and they didnt dare to do it on the huion brand name in case of legal battles. but here we are . procreate for android is here and will improve now
I think that yeah, it is like Huion Sketch, just without the "Huion" (probably because of legal causes, since it really seems like a copy of Procreate), especially because the app seems to have a special feature that allows it to connect with Huion Drawing Tablets
@@lesleyhaan116 so? Savage Interactive have been begged for years to port to Android and they don't want to. Apple keeps talking about Photoshop but Adobe don't care about iPads. Eventually someone was going to produce a Procreate copy for Android and I for one am happy. Can be as bootleg as you want - Savage Interactive are not interested in Android users.
I use infinite painter and it has been great. I would give this a shot but am not down for those ads. Also, 😂😂😂. Well, if procreate felt like it was too good for Android, then am totally open to developers just outright copying the thing and calling it something else.
It’s not a clone(i mean, visually it is, but how else would you make such tool’s ui anyways?), it’s a competitor against mobile tablet painting monopoly raised by Procreate and Apple.
This is pretty cool. I dont and never owned any apple device but procreate always seemed kinda cool. I have my favourite drawing app already since 8 years so im not going to switch probably. But I am so using this for animation oml. Sick of using flipaclip. Its decent and works fine but a lot is missing. So Hipaint will definitely come in handy there for me.
I found this on Android a few weeks ago. I'm glad to see your video on it. If Procreate keeps saying they won't come to Android, im glad to see this. I do lettering and everyone in my community works on procreate so it's been tough for those of us not wanting to splurge on an ipad just for procreate. I've been jumping around between multiple apps just to get the good lettering control plus design techniques. Hopefully this app will stand up to what i need. And it's free!
It won’t, although you do have Clip Studio Paint, which is better than Procreate in a feature sense. It still feels more clunky to use, in the same way all desktop apps do, but definitely less clunky than this and I’ve only ever heard it called the best drawing app for Android. You can easily pirate it, or since you can probably afford it, pay the $1/mo base fee. That 100% covers all the Procreate features you’d use. I use an M1 iPad, I use both. This doesn’t compare to either. iPads aren’t that pricy either! I promise you that even a 2018 (
I immediately tried the app on my iPad an it is... quite disappointing. Here are my thoughts on why if anybody is interested. When I tried to add eyelashes or any details (tried zoomed in and out) no matter what brush I changed to or how many settings I changed (including the outside settings like finger rec.) apple pencil’s movements were “late”. Strokes appeared wayyy later and nowhere close to where I tried to draw???? I don’t know if it was my fault or anything so here I am. Does anybody have this issue? I am very confused and sad... Brush creation section was very cool! And I liked the other functions if only it registered my strokes correctly! Animation section is GREATTT! I don’t know why my strokes doesn’t register correctly I thought I found a great alternative... Thank you for informing about this helpful app! I will definitely try again at a later date when I am not busy.
There are tons of Chinese apps that are essentially copies of apps from outside China, with just enough changes to skirt IP laws. Part of why they exist is many Chinese gadgets can't access apps from outside China. That would take too long to explain here LOL But I was curious how the brush engine compares to Procreate's? And also, does HiPaint have honest to goodness rulers because that would be an edge it has over the original. I wouldn't care about Apple Pencil hover if HiPaint has rulers
I was trying this one last week, and I thought it was great because I was trying to find a procreate-esque drawing app before I decided to pay for infinite paint. It was good, actually, but I think it's not as optimized as sketchbook or infinite painter, so I decided to ditch it for now. I hope it gets a substantial update. Anyways, good video!
The problem is the exclusive brushes in Proceate made by many artists and users for years. This will take time to create those. It’s like creating a new RU-vid app with same design but will take time to gather creators and contents. You can copy iPhone look etc but not the app store in and so on that is exclusive to real iPhone.
Everyone raves about Procreate! iSnobs all looking down their noses at me while I'm banging things out on Android running Sketchbook... LoL I'll have to give this a serious look now. Thank you, Brad!
Looks ok for "free" app and android, like if I had no other choice. You can just turn off the internet as well while using it, so ads just won't load because they have to use dynamic loading from the servers like doubleclick etc.
Well if he's comparing an Android app to an apple app, then the Android app has a lot of similarities and style to the apple app, then it's a comparison between the two.
Hehe hipaint looks cool, I dont really care if its a knockoff because procreate isnt on android, if I ever get a art tablet ill definitely check it out (but ill probably still use ibispaint 24/7, I perfer android over iOS)
It's legal as long as they didn't steal the original procreate code. The UI looking similar is not really a legal issue, I believe. There are enough differences for it to not be a direct clone. Also, there are not many design options for a drawing software on mobile devices. So of course they will all start looking similar eventually. The only legal issue I could see is using certain features that are exclusive to procreate. But only if the Procreate devs have patented them.
I gave it a try and really liked it but the brushes leave a lot to be desired, coming from clip studio. I'll have to try if I can import brushes and how well they behave, but for someone who is just starting on digital or just for sketching it seems pretty great
I think it's perfectly fine if someone takes advantage of their lack of interest for an android version of the app, we really need a good drawing app on android
I just downloaded this on my phone, to try it out a little. And it seems like it does have the perfect shape feature! Just draw the shape and hold the screen. I'm looking forward to try this app out on my s6lite. On my phone the canvas can't be bigger than 4000x4000. And even then I only have 5 layers. Maybe that is different on a tablet.
How long have Android users asked for Procreate to be ported over but Savage Interactive wanted to keep their one-way love affair with Apple (the same Apple who only focus on Adobe Apps at any bog iPad launch). I'm good with this, I don't mind Huion making their own version - those of us who wanted a clean but powerful tablet App on Android can stop hoping Clip Studio / Krita finally release a tablet oriented version of their Apps.
@@RailRide I use Photoshop / Affinity Designer and a couple of small but unpopular Windows Apps for drawing. I have tried CSP and Krita but I don't like them. 20 years of Photoshop does not translate easily to the CSP or Krita interface so on a tablet, I don't want to learn an interface I don't like on a big desktop computer. So yes - by tablet oriented, I mean minimalist. I've heard there are things you can do but seriously, I am really not interested in hacking those two to make it work for me. Sorry, but CSP/Krita have never done it for me. Reminds me I need to uninstall them off my Mac and my zbook.
@@mariarzyt_3D exactly. Zero thought went into making those two Apps work on a smaller tablet interface. If I still had my old Dell 27 inch Canvas - there would be no problem - they can clutter the screen as much as they want.
True, but at least they are 100% transparent and tell you what kind of permissions they will need. IbisPaint tracks the position as well, but I never received a request of permission to track it :/
Dang! That's cool! I hope there is a paid version without the ads! I'm trying to figure out if I can move away from iPad but been scared to make the jump because I am so happy with procreate.
Finally, something to replace Sketchbook with. I got really tired of waiting for Procreate's devs to roll out a version for Android - even though I do use it on my iPad, I wanted a lighter version on my phone so I could mess around a bit with my S Pen.
I could really use something like this for Windows. Clip Studio is great, but on a 13" touch screen some of the interface elements are a bit small and fiddly and cluttered, plus flipping the keyboard over for certain functions isn't ideal. Heck, I'd be happy to have infinite painter on windows
I love Ibis Paint more, and what catches my attention in Procreate is the animation and nothing more than this. If this is available in the Ibis Paint application, it will overtake and outperform the Procreate application.
Brad! I wonder why no one talks about Tayasui sketches [PRO or free version]... I have been using it for over a decade and it is very satisfying on both iPad/iOS and android phone/tablet ... In fact, I prefer both Hipaint and Tayasui on Samsung tablet simply because I like working in pop-up with adjusted transparency for tracing or references. I guess, it must be lack of brush customisation despite their great selection of tools... Have you tried it? What are your thoughts?
I must admit it has never happened to me... I don't quite know what to pin point it to... But I have always used it in Samsung s8 or ipad mini (because they don't have account system to associate to any cloud like onedrive etc
hey, i have used the free version of tayasui sketches and i love the brushes and interface! i am thinking of buying the pro version and was wondering if it's worth it???!!
I love this app, but I am losing my mind trying to use an eyedropper tool to pick colours. I thought it would be easy and obvious, The website has dead links to documentation as well.
Unfortunately the wand selection tool is bad. there will always be the dreaded white lines on the edge, and it has no option to expand/shrink the selection. Ive played witht the threshold settings and tried different brushes but the problem remains. For me this makes this app a no go. It is a shame as i was excited to see what it could do. Hopefully a future release solves this.
They even have smart shapes, so that when you draw an oval you get a perfect oval. But you have to turn that on in the settings since it is off by default. This is slowly giving prcreate a run for it's money
I didn’t see you try out the Layer Modes or like Alpha Lock, Clipping Mask, Merge Layer, I would be curious to see how well the clone handles that stuff
actually there are many applications that are very similar to procreate on android, it's just that the only advantage of procreate for me is the blur feature which is very helpful
It doesn't seem to have the line straighten feature that I can find. In Procreate, you can draw a line or a curve, and hold the end point for a second and it will smooth it out or straighten it. If that's in there, please let me know!
Can you do infinite painter on the OnePlus pad on the next video? I've been planning to get one soon and i love using infinite painter. Btw awesome video I've been searching for OnePlus pad review from artists point of view
This app is a life saver. I had paid sub to clip art n i thought its a grt alternative to photoshop for drawing. But never thought this app to be so much similar to procreate So happy
I did a review of this app (back when it was called huion Sketch) and noticed that it was similar to Procreate as well, been trying hi paint for a similar video and the pen is so bad.
I have bought the course and jnjoying it so far. I feel really motivated to draw. It would be nice if you could show in this or any other android tool how do some pre-settings. When I have it done now it seems easy but being a beginer I was confused facing setting perspective grid and trying to have it convenient for drowing. I had to play with horizon and vanising points and re-draw a room 5-6 times till it was good. This is good for practise but I might be helpful to have some android piece of advice from you. Thanks a lot for the course
Since Apple increased the prices of iPhone/iPad etc. in Europe way too much, I switched to Android but couldn't give up my iPad pro because of Procreate. I now tried HiPaint on a galaxy tab s6 which I use for reading books (I can't connect the iPad to Calibre) and it works perfectly fine. So it's time to say goodbye to overpriced apple products.
@Brad - just to clarify... i just found this out yesterday when i made 2 videos of 2 different versions of HiPaint. The tablet version didn't have the liquify option. However...the phone version there is a popup window with rotating color wheel with liquify option. Update: they just added more features and now the tablet version has that popup window with liquify option among other things.
So I used to have an iPhone, but never used Procreate Pocket since I had an iPad. I wasn't using my phone for anything except calls and texting, so I downgraded to an android (the iPhone was a used device I got from a friend when they upgraded) and passed the iPhone on to one of my teenagers. My iPad meet with an accident recently and I couldn't afford to replace it, so i just got a pressure sensative drawing tablet for my computer and moved on, but I still miss Procreate a lot. So, when I saw your video, I decided to download this app to my adroid phone and was suprised by how well it works just with my finger. Thanks!
Looks really good. I've been looking into apps to create animated stickers and GIFs for Instagram. I heard Procreate is best for that. I wonder if this app will be just as good.
Just a heads up Brad, this feels like a full rip of the huion sketch app. I was a beta tester for it, and i still have the apk. They were making a procreate alternative for android users, and took the app off the store for a time to revise the app This is ligetimately a 1 to 1 copy of it. This is concerning. I wasnt aware of this, thank you for making a video on it😅 EDIT: Ah, so this is the new dev team. This WAS huion sketch, but handed off to new devs, man, they did a great job
as an android user who always wanted to try procreate, this is really good news to me ^^ I refuse to buy an expensive apple tablet just to get access to one program
Very glad some of your viewers nagged you to try it and even more glad you shared it with your subscribers. I like Tayasui Sketches but am looking forward to trying out this app for Android on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 FE.
Thank you for the video, I found out that investing is not for everybody, you just need a strong stomach too see your portfolio go down.
