gerard used "gash" by urban decay when he did makeup for revenge it wasn't a matte shade so tbh your makeup for the concert was pretty close (I think he also used ben nye's clown paint for his complexion)

Yeah I found an old interview video on RU-vid about it. I have Gash and I wish UD didn't discontinued it. It's like a satin that blends a like darker and matte but packs more shimmery but it's subtle because the particles are so small. Literally it's the eyeshadow that gives the red emo one shadow look😂

Ngl I think a single matt red shadow was maybe the first colourful shadow I ever bought and 100% it was because of mcr! I think the website was cutecosmetics and had tons of shadows I never saw anywhere else!

I think a quick reference picture of what your inspiration is would be really helpful. I had to leave and search for an image because I don't know anything about that band or their videos (I'm much older than you lol), but I love seeing your inspiration and skill and creativity so I watch pretty much everything you make. Emo was SO NOT COOL back then lmao! I used to get made fun of daily for dressing like a scene/emo kid and my classmates used to make bully me SO much. Even faculty would make fun of my hair and clothes lol. I'm glad that so many people can look back at that era fondly though.

I totally feel you on missing out on fun concerts/the scene kid scene! Now that I finally have the income to go to shows I'm a *liiiitle* too old for modern scene looks (31 lol), BUT I'm embracing rocker chic instead and feeling glam as hell haha. I can't wait to try your Helena makeup look!!! .......Of course, my timing is also impeccable for the fact that shows are not even remotely possible right now 🥲

Ahhh I'm so envious of you, what an awesome experience. I really would've loved to see them in the Revenge days, my friends and I nearly got tickets but my parents didn't want me going to London without an adult. I did get to see them on the Black Parade tour and the Danger Days tour, both at Wembley Arena (RIP) - from RIGHT at the back of the place. I bloody love them, and I love this look, so much! 12 year old Charlotte would 1000000% wear the hell out of this. I was still "bigger" back then and options for anyone over a UK size 12 did not exist for emos back then.

I was too young to see MCR in person but I did get to see Frank Iero back in like 2016 I think when he was just starting to put out solo material (I wanna say when it was Frank Iero and the Celebration days?) Such an amazing show and such an amazing musician 😍 definitely fulfilled some childhood fantasies.

Bless your friend for inviting you to that concert, RIP your dad's Joe Cocker experience lol. I seriously loved your whole story SO MUCH, though. I didn't properly notice MCR until the Black Parade days, but I've been low-key obsessed with Gerard Way's style for years. I think I read an interview with him once where he said one of his favorite eyeshadows was Gash from Urban Decay. I was a little surprised when the two reds in this palette didn't look much like that shade, but then I realized the browns let you pretty much mix it yourself. Thank you for the flashbacks to no red eyeshadow. I'm 36 and I remember being a sad baby goth desperately trying to find an eyeshadow that would make me look like a consumptive, dying vampire and coming up with nothing. In a minute I'm gonna go stare creepily at all my red eyeshadows and tell them how much I appreciate them XD I think this is my favorite Helena video look I've seen. They're all fun to watch, but this one felt like it best captured that good, gothy grunginess, you look stunning! 🖤

Gorgeous! My teen years are a bit before MCR time, the 90's were my jam with Tool (met them, so awesome meeting Maynard!), Radiohead (met them, so cool meeting Thom and the gang), Belly (met them, same tour and night as Radiohead), Live (met them), and Marilyn Manson (before these current issues, got to meet him specifically). But I do like the Emo aesthetic and some of the music though I'm more Goth deep down in my heart and soul. You look amazing, as always... and yes, black hair is stunning on you, I have a thing for dark haired people!

I live in Uruguay so the struggle with red eyeshadow IS REAL until today, we do not have that in the local market. What I used to do back in the Sweet Revenge days was putting red lip liner on my lids and smudge the sh¡t out of it.

Regarding new releases selling out immediately.... My bf is an app dev and wrote a simple little script to buy a single craft beer during a virtual launch. The script automatically filled his cart with a set number of items and automatically purchased them. It's a sketchy concept for a lot of reasons, not least of which is potential for abuse.... But boy is it a tempting idea to use for other digital releases.... 😅

i wasn't into mcr but i was (and still am) a huge fan of brody dalle & the distillers. her eye makeup was like panda eyes but with reddish/copperish/orange shadow with black eyeliner & mascara, kinda similar to what you got here. and let me tell you, i wore that look OUT! it's honestly still my favorite and i've reverted to it at this point. i just love it so much. oh, and i can definitely attest to the absolute DEARTH of reds back then. i remember just using a mac blush for that, ha.

I always thought her lips were just one of those SUPER pale pink bullet lipsticks! Those were so popular in the 90's/early 20's. I must have had 6 or 7 different pale shimmery glosses and lipsticks and so much cool purple/grey eyeshadow! 😂

what a cool video! your makeup is awesome and i loved your concert story. that show sounded totally unreal. it had to be amazing seeing them at a small venue like that. i saw them at riot fest like a year and a half ago and it was so crowded and overwhelming. still cool though too. thank you for the video and i definitely think you should hold onto that autographed tie if you haven't gotten rid of it! i like decluttering things too but some stuff you just have to hang onto.

i don't think i'll ever be able to get this palette because i am broke in an already shitty currency, but oh, this brings me back! i was around 11 when three cheers came out and it was honestly instant love. when they broke up years ago i was so devastated i cried, and i have only cried like 3 times over artists and it is when they have passed away, so it was a big deal to me. i just love MCR, they make me so happy. And yes, being emo was NOT cool and i would also say "i am not emo mom" but hell yeah i was at heart.

I’m actually preeeettty close to your age (gonna be 30 in April) and to think about baby me discovering MCR 18 years ago is giving me so many emotions. I remember watching the Helena music video in my grandparent’s basement on MTV for the first time and I lost my mind! Even way back then I was obsessed with makeup and I remember scouring any sources I could find to figure out what eyeshadow that at least Gerard wore. I found that he wore “Gash” by Urban Decay and I spent almost a month saving my money to buy it. I can remember how excited I was! Oh man those were the days. Also that Essence Lash Princess mascara is amazing I’m wearing it right now lmao

Late thirties me thanks you for this cuz I too saw/experienced the scene/emo/punk scenes via the internet because of where I live (Barbados) I got named the gothy witch chick because of hair/makeup/music aesthetic choices during my younger days and even getting black single eyeshadow was difficult (black eye liner pencils existed but at the time everyone was still rocking those black liner/pink shimmery lipstick lips -_- the 90's in Barbados/ the Caribeean was wild lmao). Not to mention that I wanted to be different, so of course my color of choice was navy blue. I found a random really dark navy blue single eyeshadow and that was my look for about 5 years lol (Tiny edit: peeping that nail game lol nice)

Sooooo.... you are a year younger than my oldest daughter😱😱. First... I will be 54 soon and I still feel like I am in my 20's. No joke!! Age is just a number. Honestly!!❤. My daughter was a total emo-scene kid. I STILL have her dolly falls, black platform boots, mini skirts with the buckles and chains, etc.... she had every color hair imaginable and a mohawk. In those days, sadly, you guys were sooooooo judged by people who were scared of authenticity. I allow my girls to be who they are. All 3 are gay🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈. I have no doubt that you and my oldest daughter would have hung out and been friends:). She, too, is very artistic. (All 3 are actually). It’s cool to hear your music taste, we’re about the same age so it’s neat to see the overlap in our music tastes from that time from two separate parts of the world (I grew up in California). I love this eye look with the buzzed mullet it’s a nice mix of hard and soft too❤️❤️

OMG my heart is full. I dyed my hair radioactive blue-black twice in my sophomore year in high school because I wanted to look like Gerard Way. I just turned 30 last year too, and I still dig the look so hard - so every once in a while I wear a red smokey eye. Definitely gonna try your version soon!

Ugh I have the exact same dilemma re: dyeing my hair black again. I was just vacillating on it again earlier today. My roots are massive so I need to decide very soon whether to bleach again (pain in the arse), or go black (not so easy to come back from). I don't knooowwwwww.

I grew up in Australia and the only time I got to see MCR was when they supported Green Day during their American Idiot tour. I was more excited to see MCR than Green Day. I never got to see them play again. There are so many bands I never got to see as a kid and I will forever be jealous of Europe and NA for all the bands they had chances to see before they "got big". I remembered as a kid looking for wacky makeup but that shit just DID NOT exist, let alone in Australia! KIDS THESE DAYS!!! Smaller venues are so much better, I had a great time seeing Dragonforce in a tiny pub in Vancouver, Not sure if I can do huge concerts any more XD I have to live vicariously through stories like yours :')

Hoooow are we not best friends. MCR was my first concert! The week I turned 15 they came to my city...TBP had just come out so they were BIG. I was obsessed with them at 12/13 too but I wasn't allowed to see them until I was "old enough to go to concerts" lol! So jealous!
