Hey Curtis! This is the homeless house painter who emailed you yesterday regarding your course. I wish you were closer, I'd LOVE to paint your greenhouse for you!!

I like how he mentioned the value added aspect, like instead of selling tomatoes, sell salsa. That is a great idea. My parents have an avocado farm, and I have been thinking that they should have some interns, aka free workshop students , to walk around their farm once a week and pick up all of the fallen avocados that we normally wouldn't be able to sell, and then convert them into avocado oil. I will tell my parents to look for a consultant who is very experienced in making avocado oil.

I like the value added concept also, but there's also effort added too.

that's what interns are for :-)

sorry, I mean students who are attending the free workshop and getting a free education while doing something productive, not interns...those are totally different.

Those are excellent points. In regards to making avocado oil out of fallen avocados that would otherwise go to waste, I have been wanting to do that regardless of whether or not my parents actually start selling bottles of avocado oil. It looks like you just peel the avocados and remove the pit, and then let the flesh sit out in the sun till it gets dry, and then squeeze out the avocado oil with a juicer or by other means. Also, I guess we could sell it as avocado oil for skin lotion instead of for as a food oil, to get around the food safety liability issue.

with local gardening clubs and the internet getting a consultant is in my pov a waste of money, but if you got money to spend go for it.

Curtis, I watch a lot of your videos. I also see that you farm in Canada. Can you recommend a source that would guide us in south Texas?

I don't have a farm but I have a nice organic garden in the backyard. Do you know of any online horticulture classes or botany classes that would help maximize my garden? I have problems with things like blossom end rot even though I amend the soil with plenty of calcium and when I have the soil analyzed, it the analysis says it has plenty of calcium. I have watched a bazillion videos, read articles, listen to gardening shoes online and have been to a couple of garden classes, but I need more info on what is the best grade of soil for each plant. I am in Spring (north of Houston), zone 9.

I'm very knowledgeable about soil and compost screens. I have built 3 different types. One is my own invention. I'm about to start building a 4th type. I don't know how I could monetize my experience. I don't know what kind of people my knowledge would be most useful to.

David- so cool! We would be more than happy to match you up with either a manufacturer or show you the direction to go to sell them on your own.

Great video guys! You both rock! - I struggle with perhaps the most important aspect of farming: marketing. Wondering where can I go to learn more, or potentially do a consultation; does anybody have any marketing resources? Thanks everybody!

So if someone says, hey, can you come over to Italy or some other country and consult me on my property. You can stay with us for free. As a consultant, how do you reply to this kind of request?

At what point did you feel comfortable marketing yourself as a consultant? Was it something you sought out or that just came as people knew you farmed? Did you start with friends/family or something else? How do you determine what rate to charge for your consultation?
@cupbowlspoonforkknif
@cupbowlspoonforkknif 7 лет назад
One way you could price your services is by relating it to how much time or money you're saving your customer. If you save them $5000 then getting paid $500 would be a great deal even if you only spend 5 minutes with them. The amount of time they save by using your techniques is also measurable metric. "For $100 I'll save you 500 hours per year!".

I suppose it all comes back to value propositions.

Exactly- just finished up a consult today where we saved the farm probably 20 K this year.. so satisfying to be able to help farms change and become profitable and sustainable!!

Hey Curtis, not sure if you heard about it yet but a few of the channels i watch have added a new steaming source. many people are hoping it will replace youtube. steemit.com pays the producer of content when people like it (upvote). also the people who watch your vids would get paid. An American Homestead channel seems to think the payout is better. I'm new to it and thought you might want to look if its a new revenue source. best of luck, please continue to make your content, its all great!
