She is definitely a genius. She always overwhelms me and leaves me speechless...!! As a pianist, I would love to play beautiful pianissimo and powerful fortissimo like her. Hiromi's performance is unique and full of infinite charm. This trio's playing is like progressive rock and I absolutely love them.

I was blessed to have seen Hiromi perform in person twice, once with this group and again with the legendary bassist Stanley Clarke. To say both were incredible shows would be an understatement. And please when you get the chance, I would love to see you react to this performance, where she teams up with Anthony Jackson and the incomparable Steve Smith on drums. This is one of my favorites: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VJExqsrZzeA.html

WOOOOWWWW, thank you so much Ryan for this one. I can't believe you finally come to the Hiromi's planet. I follow her for many years now, and I completely agree with Anthony Jackson (the bass player) when he says: "I think Hiromi is one of the greatest artist who have a seat in front of a piano". My favorite pianist of all time, and by far, not only because of her stunning playing technic, but above all because of the melodic lines in her compositions. And I absolutely love her quote: "I want to deliver my music from heart to heart, not from fingers to ears". Just brilliant, and so true. It could be really great to have your reaction to some other stunning pieces from her like : - The Canon's Pachelbel (solo) : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Awbv7HzQsA4.html - the most brilliant version I have heard so far. - A place to be (Solo): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mf6UNCBy3MA.html - there are more recent version of this beautiful piece of music, but this version is the best one for me. 😭 - Firefly (Solo): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Sbuws1jmtg.html - Warning, MASTERPIECE! 😲 - Note from the past (Quartet Sonicbloom): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-duM9WIvcxJg.html - Highly talented musicians, and what a composition. To go deeper with Hiromi, a short interview/documentary about her first trio album "Voice": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h4q8Ts8Lsm0.html And sadly, in 2023, still no Blu-ray from this amazing artist (only a few DVD, and RU-vid 😤). What a shame!!! Enjoy 😉

Hiromi is a savant, Po! Her duet with Chick Corea (RIP) is so beyond perfection. I was able to see Kiyo*Sen in Tokyo, 2 days before the Band Maid TGT show. Kiyomi Otaka (only female Casiopea member) on keys was out of this world. It was Senri Kawaguchi (drums) birthday gig with around a hundred of us, and she shared her birthday cake with us. Btw, Senri (5'0"/ 90 lbs dry) hits hard with precision, even harder than Akane, Po! But, to me, Hiromi, by far, is at another level, to include Aimi Kobayashi, who is a concert pianist and Chopin competition finalist (imagine playing a piece for almost an hour by memory). Hope to see you at the Houston or Austin show in May, Po!? 🦍🍌

FYI: drummer Simon Phillips is a legend on the music scene and has been blowing peoples minds since the 80's. He has played with so many people and done so many sessions and he and the bass player Anthony Jackson just have incredible chemistry with Hiromi. Who really is kind of beyond words to describe. Fun reaction. Leaves me speechless every time I hear her play too.

I always mention Senri Kawaguchi as my "gateway" to the Japanese music scene a few years ago, but really I think that she was suggested because the algorithm picked up that I'd been listening to Hiromi for a few years prior to that. She is wonderful. She dances with her piano and sings to it. A highly emotional and energetic player. I don't know if anyone in the twitch chat pointed it out, or if you've worked it out for yourself, yet, but that's none other than Simon Phillips on drums. He plays with her a lot.

Her Trio Project is prob a high point for most (my fave is her solo album), but if you like guitars you will love her Sonicbloom quartet. She was just a kid and formed it with one of her Berklee professors; Time Out is a bomber track.

Sonicbloom is cool, and the last bit Ryan improvised made me think he'd really appreciate the guitar work on that album. She did 3 albums before Time Control though with that same drummer and bass player, Martin Valihora and Tony Grey. They're fucking incredible, and she hasn't ever quite written anything like them since.

YES! FINALLY IT'S REACHED YOUR RADAR. hiromi uehara trio is very much worth listening to. neil gaiman... err, simon phillips is perhaps the best guy to have ever completed the lineup. she's got another killer track you might also want to check out. it's called 'voice', and it's quite an eargasm. there's a bunch of australia music students which covered it as part of their recital, and it was so brilliant.

Thanks Ryan! I was dumbstruck to see you reacting to a full on hard jazz performance and liking it! I am happy that you are able to appreciate Hiromi Uehara. Often times, jazz can be off putting for Rock aficionados. The time signatures, the improvisations, the dissonance of notes and chords, lengthy solos, call and response, matching note for note like they are joined at the hip, or mind melded, can have some people running for the hills screaming 'this ain't music!' But if you're a musician, there is no way that you can ignore the mastery and technique of the individual musicians. Hiromi's piano playing is captivating and out of this world. That Toto's drummer is a straight out jazz monster is crazy! More of this please!

Simon Phillips has a long resume. He is one of the best, in my opinion. Notice something unique about his style? He is completely ambidextrous. As a drummer myself, I can only shake my head. You said put your guitar down? I broke my sticks.

Simon Phillips (for his bombastic rock fusion reputation; amongst others he has played with Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore & drummed for Toto from '92-'13) & Anthony Jackson (session legend, played with Buddy Rich, Roberta Flack, Al di Meola & Chaka Khan as just a small sample) are bigger prestige names; but I still prefer her first main trio with rhythm section of Martin Valihora on drums & Tony Grey on bass. They met at Berklee and had a developed symbiotic way of riffing off of each other that never felt forced, Hiromi seemed to direct tempo shift with her shoulders. You can watch several different live performances of a particular song and they'd also sound noticeably different. The Sonicbloom project added Dave 'Fuze' Fiuczynski on double necked guitar (a 12 string fretless & a seven string with a hardtail low B but the other six on a trem) and released two amazing albums (the first all originals and the second mainly covers but with heavily changed arrangements) which got toured extensively. Here's a TV studio performance of 'Time Difference' that shows off her ferocious left hand technique and the quartet's energy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VR_rV-14luo.html And an initially slower number, 'Deep Into The Night' that gradually ramps up with multiple 'false' endings & crescendos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VjJlYOGYlC4.html

I prefer Led Zeppelin to IRON MAIDEN. So I prefer BAND-MAID to LOVE BITES. So, I prefer Diana Krall, who doesn't deviate from the jazz idiom but is clear and bluesy, to HIROMI-UEHARA, who does not deviate from the jazz idiom but is fierce and colorful. Improvisation...very rarely do I find great playing, so most jazz is boring. I prefer play that is perfected through precise calculation and trial and error, rather than play that is based on discipline and sensibility and automatism. jazz improvisation, HIROMI-UEHARA's take featured here, in my case, the second time I listened to it, I was half impressed, and the third time I listened to it half a year later. I want to listen to it every time I drink alcohol, and I will upload a performance of a jazz standard song performed at the same place as this take. It's my favorite jazz improvisation. H.Hancock, W.Shorter, S.Clarke & O.Hakim -Cantelope Island- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JixfzsQWZ8c.html HIROMI-UEHARA...I think she is a wonderful pianist with a rich artistic sensibility and a great training. But I have no idea what she wants to do. It seems to me that she is just aimlessly wasting her talent.
