Coming up next, an interview with both members of one of the greatest groups or duos of the 70s… Loggins and Messina on a song that was charmed from the get-go…. Jim Messina’s dad HATED rock and Roll. He used to yell at his song for playing the loud music. So Messina wrote a song about it. He called it Your Mama Don’t Dance and then put the lyrics: your Daddy Don’t Don’t Rock and Roll. After he Showed it to Kenny Loggins who helped him finish it, the song became an all-time classic… and get this, the song was inspired by the king of rock and roll Elvis, and then the King Elvis Presley covered it. This group was elated when they heard his version that is until he forgot the lyrics! Then in the 80s it was covered again and hit the charts all over again when the hard rock glam metal band Poison did it. Up next an interview with both of these legends on Professor of Rock.

A friend of Kenny’s a few weeks ago commented to me on Facebook and told me that one night Kenny picked up a date and she said, Why so down? He said, I just got a cease and desist order from Disney for The House At Pooh Corner. She said, You got your guitar with you? They went back to her house and she said play it for my dad and he of course loved it. He was one of the high up at Disney and he said I’ll take care of it.

That was when The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded it...Kenny recorded it years later and it was named, by his son, Return to Pooh Corner and he added a verse.

My then boyfriend, now husband of 50 years and I saw Loggins and Messina at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, PA, in March of 1973. Jim Croce opened for them. What a great concert that was!

Lucky girl! That would have been a great show. Jim Cin 1987roce was awesome. I did see Kenny Loggins on his own in 1987 which was good, but music in the early to mid 70's was the best.

Oh, yeah. I spent most of one summer at an out of tune upright piano my parents got trying to master that gorgeous intro to "Hummingbird". All those arpeggiated triplets and beautiful chord changes. I just about got it--and then had to go back to school. *sigh*

Elvis liked them and the song enough to do it live ..He always did songs he liked and also listened to in his own music collection , He was a huge music buff and fan of a very huge range of music styles .. And he always collected what was on the radio at that time and year that he liked and songs of any time didn't matter when it came out if he liked it and related to it he would play it , And most influenced him to change and progress with the times ...But Elvis would not have kept the song copy righted blocked from being used for something great like professor of rock did here... Sad thing Elvis has no control over his Enterprises because he has been gone long since and greedy people who now own most of Elvis's Enterprises run and do things Elvis would in no way support or want Elvis was about the music the quality and art and about the fans but those who run it now are about the money .......................as a longtime Elvis fan.. I really think he would have liked and listened to Professor of Rock

Knew what song this was gonna be. 😂😂. I casually say these lyrics to my friends and family. Just last week when my man was cranky about work and being short with everyone, I looked at him and said “Do you know what your problem is?” When he snapped “WHAT?” I looked him dead in the eye and said “Your mama don’t dance, and your daddy don’t rock and roll”. He did start laughing.

Great segment! A funny story about this song-my friends in the band SYRE covered this song in the 80’s. Well, one night Rikki and Bret from Poison came to see them play in Toronto and ended up onstage jamming. When Syre played their version of YOUR MAMA DONT DANCE, the Poison guys said after ‘that’s a really great song to cover’. Guess what song Poison covered (and had a hit with?) on their next album. 100% true story.

I'm 68, I'm guessing it was 52 years ago I saw L&M at the Nassau Coliseum for $4.50. Opening acts were Steely Dan just released Can't buy A Thrill and the Doobie Brothers were beginning their Captain and Me Tour with super long hair flannel shirts and work boot. Less then a year later I saw the Doobies at Carnige Hall at the end of the tour with new hair cuts glitter platforms and they blew the roof off . Loggins and Massina were awesome. played for hours it felt like. "Angry Eyes" those long james of the 70's. Miss them!

I see that sort of comment on *every* video posted by my favorite young band these days: The Dead South. They are very hard to pigeon hole, because at first blush… you might assume they were a blue grass band, what with a combination of banjo, guitar, mandolin and cello. But the boys themselves will admit to being metal heads in terms of music they would listen to in their spare time. “Broken Cowboy” is probably my favorite original of theirs, but their cover of “people are strange” is great as well. Many of their fans found then via the occasionally viral video for “in hell I’ll be in good company”

Loggins and Messina was the first concert I went to. I then saw their Finale Tour with Richie Furay as the opening act. Also with what Kenny Loggins did both with Jim Messina and as a solo act, he belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Seeing acts much less worthy both nominated and elected to the HOF is very frustrating.

My Grandpa Paul was as Jim Messina's Step-Father...At first. Was daily at his house and hearing Country blasting a quarter mile away out of Bowling Green, KY called WLBJ in the Milk Barn. He said his 'Country Music' made the cows happier to give good milk. We always knew where he was when in the fields when out on the tractors before he bought the first one with an enclosed cab. He wasn't particular to rock and then...He heard Loggin's and Messina's 'Momma Don't Dance' and totally related to it. This opened doors in his Musical Palatte making Mom really happy as he insisted she never play Jazz or Rock before the 70's in his presense. Still crank the volume with Loggins and Messina.

I will forever love Kenny Logins for the song Leader of the band. My sixth grade teacher was friends with him and he came and sang that song and hung out with us kids. That song was imprinted in my heart before I even knew what it meant. And yes I had a great sixth grade teach we even put on a rock show every year from 4th 6th grade I did Billy Squire in my sixth year. That something #ProfessorofRock that you should do a segment on unless I missed it Billy Squire was amazing as well. Gonna actually go look at your catalog now. Thank you for all the memories.

My first concert was Loggins and Messina in 1976 at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. By the time the show was ending it had begun to rain. Jimmy Messina said that they would skip the encore process and just keep going. He hoped that it didn't turn into a "snuff concert." They finished with Vahevala, which wasn't a short song. Great show.

My son, Danny, was born as 'Danny's Song' was a huge hit both by Kenny Loggins and Anne Murray. My son was named for his dad, but this was such a perfect welcome to the world for him...and it was in the spring. Loggins and Messina formed a part of the soundtrack of my early college years, but Kenny's music is what I remember best, and one of my favorites was "This Is It".

Not long ago, I found myself belting out "Whenever I Call You Friend" pretty much automatically and without much thought. I had to take a minute and realize how much I really liked it😊

"Loggins and Messina" - absolute legends! Kenny Loggins is ingenious task oriented 'composer for hire' - none better on this planet! Just give him a movie and he'll create the soundtrack that no living composer can match! Kenny only needed inspiration! That's why Jim Messina with his own creative ideas was the perfect match to Kenny - they were 'feeding off each other' creating memorable music!

"Your Mama Don't Dance" is my favorite Loggins & Messina song. It's one of those great songs that best captures the fun spirit and energy of rock and roll (For today's poll, many other similar classics were also mentioned). Love it.

My dad was a radio DJ when he met my mom and a newsman when I grew up so music of all kinds was played in our house. Never had a problem with rock and roll. Just couldn't play records too loud! Then headphones came out and all was good!

It's cool to know the history behind the song. Loggins and Messina were great, and in today's world of pop songs built around endless repetition of a short melodic line and maybe three chords, their work is all the more precious. Your video made me chase down my very favorite song of theirs, "Pretty Princess". Even more beautiful than I remembered. Thanks, Professor!

We all have those dark moments in our lives that can bring us down but for me this music brings a flood of fond memories of good times. Im 67 as well and growing up there was always music playing. I was raised on Hank Williams and Johnny Cash and then I found rock n roll. I would put it on the radio and my mom was turning it louder. I still listen, loud, and smile, and remember, better, simpler times. Boy we had a lot of fun.

Two of my greatest heart throbs of music from the 70's-80's. We still sing this beauty at parties now and then....so funny, so upbeat. Still need music like this. So thank you Loggins and Messina for all the great music you've written. Favorite singer for r&r...anything Buddy Holly!

I saw Kenny Loggins when he was the concert opening act for Fleetwood Mac Rhiannon tour. He was perfect! I always liked him both with Messina and solo. Thank you PoR! Great post, you've never disappointed me!

Loggins & Messina was the very first album I purchased (using my babysitting income) when I was 13. "Your Momma Don't Dance" got me into L & M but then I was absolutely mesmerized with the "Sittin' In" album with Vehevala, Nobdy Like You and Trilogy which I still enjoy to this day. I was born in the 60s and grew up in a household of country music (my Mom) and jazz (my Dad). I was fortunate that my parents didn't really care what I listened to and always encouraged me to find music I loved, whether I was playing it on a record, or me singing or experimenting with different instruments. I was a weird kid because I loved jazz and classical more than anything. I was aware of rock-n-roll, but I didn't really listen to it other than on the radio in a car taking me to school. That is until my older cousins came over and started playing their records for me. The Beatles, the Guess Who, the Supremes, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Loggins and Messina. It felt like another door opened for me. I could hear the jazz and blues influences in the riffs being played which to this day makes me love all forms of music. Great video!

OMG ! Thank you ! Loved this. Fell in love with the song because of Loggins and Messina. My older brother was a huge musical influence,but unlike Kenny,I actually got to play the LPS because he would be doing free-hand charcoal sketching,telling me what albums to play,( and of course you Always played the whole thing ! ) He had me put this one one and I swore I'd get my own ! Still have it to this day. Also have it on Poison's greatest hits and loved that version almost as much as L & M's original ! Elvis covering it was the cherry on top of the sundae !!

I loved playing and singing “You’re Momma Don’t Dance” in my high school band. What a fun song. Clever lyrics and great opening guitar riff. It always got a great response.

As a 10-yr old when it came out, it was the 2nd 45 in my collection. My dad had brought the song home...played it...and then my parents started dancing around like they did when my dad DJed the sock hops in '56! Thanks, Professor, for covering their song.

Your Mama Don't Dance is my favorite Loggins and Messina song. My wife love's to hear me play it on the acoustic guitar too, one of her favorites. I appreciate the talent of Loggins and Messina both as performers and writers. I wasn't aware of the Poison version or that Elvis covered it but they seem fine to me.

It's funny when poison remade your mama don't dance they were singing it about the same generation that loved this song too. How timeless is that. I love when the artist tell us where the inspiration for the sound and chords come from after I hear that I can't unhear it even if I didn't make the connection before. Great episode professor! I never heard Elvis's version but I like Loggins and Messina's better. That "muddy blues" version was really good and they should - or maybe he should - do a revamped version like he redid "What A Fool Believes" for an acoustic show. There is a case for revamping, re-recording, remixing or otherwise reimagining one's song(s). I just watched a video about KISS's "Double Platinum" album and how the songs on it were different. In some cases, some were better while others weren't but it's nice to variate the listening experience or even take advantage of techniques and technologies to improve the sound quality or even the musicality of the music that were not available at the time; or as new ideas as to presenting their music, come to the mind of the artist(s).

I was a teenager in the 80's, growing up in the 70s my parents loved music. We had CCR to Conway and Loretta at our house. Living in rural Montana, getting to go to a Sat night dance was top on our list. I remember hearing Momma Don't Dance (and probably shaking my booty to it) Then Poison being my favorite 80s band... of course we cranked it... the best for me is when my then 21 yr old, on a road trip shared her ipod tunes and Poison's version was on her play list. ❤

I love this song and only now realize it was Loggins and Messina. They were great together! "Your Momma don't dance and your daddy don't rock 'n roll" made me feel the tension between parents and teenagers over music in the 70's, and it also drew a picture of the long-hair hippies of that time. I love it and love both of the covers by Elvis and Poison! ❤🎸🥁🎶🎼💿

Both the sonic quality and the production mastery of those L&M albums is absolutely astounding, they just sound amazing given it was the early 70's when some other records from those years sound terrible or just mediocre. Great credit goes to Jim Messina, I just love listening to those early vinyl records.

I saw Loggins and Messina in the early 70s with my sister. I think Taj Mahal opened for them. It was a great concert! We even got their autographs in a songbook of their music from Sittin’ In. I saw them a few years later when I was in college. So good!

The very 1st 45 that I purchased with my allowance at 8 years old! My parents were big Country fans, but I heard Your Mama Don’t Dance on a jukebox at pizza parlor on a Friday night. On Saturday, I plopped down 99 cents at the local K-Mart and played it repeatedly for over a week.

I saw Loggins and Messina at the Stanford Amphitheater with my best friend (the same venue where I saw Boston Pops with my folks!) Lots of encodes, if I remember right! Great fun, I still think of it every time I think of them. I think I saw them at UC Santa Barbara, too. It was a schoolnight.... They put on a great show.

Back in the day I didn't own much vinyl but I did buy L&M. I played it constantly. Especially liked House and Pooh Corners and Run River Run. Thanks for the memories.
