True story alert: In early 2013, my 17 year old cat that I got when she was 2 was having health issues. In March of that year, I went to set my alarm before bed, and the part of this song "How wonderful life is while your in the world" played. I looked for my cat, and I found her deceased and still warm, under my bed. She is dearly missed, but I was blessed with my son 14 months later. God works in mysterious ways. Love you Jay and Amber. God Bless Everyone!

For most of his early career, Elton contributed the music and the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin. They were an incredible songwriting team, as Bernie's words were like poetry, but Elton always found a way to elevate them into something just heavenly.
@robdaviesprogm
@robdaviesprogm 2 года назад
It's amazing that this timeless classic was penned, music and lyrics, in about an hour or so at most. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics over breakfast, handed them off to Elton at the piano, went upstairs to have a shave, and by the time he was done, Elton had written the music from top to bottom. They knew the moment they wrote it that it was something special. The public certainly agreed, since it was their first major hit single (Top 10 in both the US and the UK in 1970 and 1971, respectively). While the lyrics were definitely about the girl Bernie was seeing at the time, "Your Song" has grown to mean far more than that since then. It has become Elton's dedication to his fans. In the more than 4000 concerts Elton has performed in his career, there has barely been a show where he hasn't performed "Your Song". In fact, there's a fantastic video compilation of Elton performing it throughout the decades. It's well worth a watch, if only for the incredible array of costumes he's worn for his concerts.
@johnjsal
@johnjsal 2 года назад
That's crazy. I've always heard a lot of musicians say that they almost always write music before the lyrics. It's amazing that Taupin can write lyrics without even knowing how it's going to sound! Unless maybe he does have some idea? I'm not sure what his exact process is.
@robdaviesprogm
@robdaviesprogm 2 года назад
@@johnjsal generally speaking, Bernie has no idea what Elton is going to write. It wasn't until later on that Bernie had any sort of musical experience whatsoever. In fact, when they first started writing together, Bernie didn't even structure his lyrics with any sort of verse/chorus/etc. Elton would have to figure that out what the chorus was going to be himself, if there even was going to be a chorus! That's how you got such atypical structures like you hear in early songs like "Sixty Years On", "The Greatest Discovery", and "Tiny Dancer". The "lyrics first" approach is unusual, though I've used it quite a bit myself, probably because I was so strongly influenced by Elton. From what I understand, Bernie just comes up with an idea and starts writing. For Elton, he says when he reads Taupin's lyrics, "a little movie plays in [his] mind", and out come the chords. Usually, if he doesn't get the music in an hour, he comes back to it later or abandons the lyric altogether. It's worth noting that while lyrics usually came first with Bernie, Elton has written music first with other writers, and on occasion with Bernie. Two John/Taupin songs where the music came first are "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Gary Osborne, with whom Elton wrote mainly during the period of 1978-82, wrote lyrics to Elton's music, often fleshing out lyrical ideas that Elton had come up with.

Thank you for the clear explanation about the songs and team Elton John/Bernie Taupin! It's very fascinating how some artists can write songs. It's something magical they have in them, that, to our great joy, comes out into the world. Indeed, in interviews and articles I saw that many writers first have the main musical lines on which they write lyrics. It can be a real work in progress, as you can see in the video Queen - The making of “One Vision”. Sometimes it's pure luck. The melody for "You Win Again" came to Barry Gibb in a dream. And when The Doors only had a few lines to the music of "Peace Frog", they filled out the rest with lyrics from three poems previously written by Jim Morrison.

This one brought me to tears, it was me and my wife's wedding song a long, long time ago. Macy's in Manhattan used to have a little recording booth where you could record your own "demo" and I made one, singing "Your Song" to her. His first 5 years, 69-74 are nothing less than phenomenal. His music and a Bernie Taupin’s lyrics are unparalleled. The reason this one is "broken down" as Jay has described it is because you're listening to a live performance. The studio version, which was released as the single, has a full string section behind him, which I suspect was replaced in this live performance by a synth. "Your Song" was his debut single when we first learned of him in 1970. A huge hit, and for my money, perhaps his best song. He had so many other great ones through the years, but I'm not sure there was ever one any better. If you ever want to just throw an album on and let it track, listen to his "Tumbleweed Connection" album. Just lay back and enjoy.

I remember this song well. Was played a lot in the bars up here in Canada. Elton's first hit song from the winter of '70 - '71. Another awesome love ballad is 'Sacrifice' from Dec. '89. This song has 436 million plus views on one video.

When I was a teenager this was my favorite song. When I got older I had a car and used to go to this bar called Bronzo's where all the Italians hung out. One Saturday night I had Elton John on the 8 track playing Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting. As I pulled into the parking lot all these guys were fighting and one guy is on my hood and another was thrown over something. This song was playing and it was ridiculous!

Early live Elton is some of the best. I love these live BBC shows from 1970 and 1971. You could literally pick any song from any one of them and you can't go wrong. Border Song, Madman Across the Water, Levon, Burn Down the Mission. The well is deep.

I have only watched one reaction to an Elton song called TICKING. The reactors dubbed it a masterpiece and I completely agree. It is quite long so I understand why people don't choose it but...you REALLY will be BLOWN AWAY by it! (Off of his 1974 album CARIBOU).

Elton wrote a Broadway show called Aida. The star of that show, Heather Headley, won a Tony award for her performance. When Elton won the Kennedy Center Honor, Heather sang Your Song in tribute to him. It's a stunning version and Elton was very moved. If you want, you should definitely do a reaction to her version. It's worth it.

How much more wonderful life has been for the rest of us for more than 50 years thanks to the musical genius of Elton John, and it started with this song, 'Your Song,' back in '71. He's had countless great songs but I'd suggest, Amber, you would love hearing either his dedication to Marilyn Monroe, 'Candle in the Wind,' or his tribute to Princess Di, ' Goodbye England's Rose.' Same tune, different lyrics. You can't go wrong hearing songs by Elton John, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Cat Stevens.. thanks so much for your excellent and heartfelt reactions!.

I first saw Elton John in concert in the early 1970’s at Madison Square Garden. Every time this great man came to town on tour, I went to see him, you can add up the numbers. In Elton’s later years, this was an encore song, and here’s the thing: Elton played piano, and we sang Your Song to him..the entire audience. I just saw him on his final tour, and he brought this song back into the regular part of the concert and sang it to us again. This song is magic.
