THIS STORY:
Diogo Alves was a Portuguese serial killer and robber. Between 1836 and 1840, he killed 70 people. The crimes he committed were all in the area of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, thus earning the title "Aqueduct Murderer". He was sentenced to death and hanged on 19 February 1841, along with one of his accomplices.
His head was separated from his body and placed in a flask to preserve it for scientific purposes, and it is now a tourist attraction.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Well his face is still around and in better condition than many of those of people still breathing. Plus everyone else who went after him is dust and less than dust, names lost to history for the most part. I'd be amused too if I were such a person to be able to have not just my story or even my image but my actual face 'outlive' (so to speak) any of those good people who judged me and deemed me worthy of death. serial killer mindsets are trippy that way. hell they usually make up the best lines for their own death. Remember the one who was sentenced to the electric chair and suggested because his last name was French, "How about this one for a headline boys? "French Fries!" . *shrug* like I said-trippy mindsets for the most part.

@davidhollenshead4892 They probably do the same kind of preservation work on the head? A lot of people who keep curio collections will replace the formaldehyde or whatever pickling fluid they used when it becomes fogged or discolored; I'm sure it's not a stretch to think that people back then did that, too. What would be the purpose of lying to everyone about the head being a reproduction?

Great video, I'm currently finishing up my 1st year of Medical School at University of Lisbon's Faculty of Medicine, and as such I've had quite a few Anatomy classes in the Anatomy Theater and at first it's quite frealy given the context but after a while you kind of get used to it, some of us even call him Dioguito (Little Diogo), even though I in particular, am still not fond of being near him. Regarding the reason as to why no dissections were made, from what my Anatomy teacher told me it is theorized that the Doctors who convinced the legal system to let them have the body of Diogo were actually friends of the Doctor whose family was murdered, so it can be seen as an act of vengeance, to forever immortalize in it's entirety the acts done by this murderer.

During quiet times did u examine a few of those jars on the light bench? I did security at the Strong Museum of Play - rich, socialite Margaret Strong around the 19th century collected dolls from a young girl and then traveled the world picking up additions to her collection which she ultimately left for posterity for children of all ages - that said the basement contains the oldest most badly preserved dolls, at midnight walking through in low light their eyes would follow me especially this one with the head partly charred and mssing - talk about spooky - they had to get more security bc crackheads were stealing the dolls, extremely well researched crackheads bc they took the rarest examples - to this day none have been found put up for sale so there might be an underground trade in dolls among the hardcore fiends

His name was Herve Villechaize. His story was quite sad. He took his own life in the 1993 and left a note explaining how he was in constant pain due to his internal organs being too oversized for his small body. He was forced to sleep upright with his knees bent to help alleviate the agony he was always in. I also think he additionally touched upon his struggles with severe depression stemming from his dwarfism, and how he also suffered with feelings of disenchantment and jadedness from being constantly typecasted in Hollywood. Very sad indeed.😔

Diego could have been saved, along with his victims had he lived today. In my opinion Diego's fall from that horse and the trauma it caused messed with that man's mind big time. Without the benefits of modern medicine, the sick man became a serial killer. Sad but true I think.

Doesn't seem to be the case as he became murderous much later rather than immediately after the accident. I somehow doubt a human head would be so perfectly preserved after two centuries, particularly bearing in mind how primitive such techniques were 200 years ago. One thing's for sure - those are not his eyes. The eyeballs, along with the brain, are among the first and fastest things to decompose. If the head is real, my guess is glass eyes were inserted, to give him an alert, alive look. Great storytelling, as always!

IDK man, his eyes looks waaaayy too real to be a mid XIX century prosthetic, it would be a great one even for today standarts. I'm inclined to believe this is real, but i would be curious on what solution did they use for that because its indeed remarkable. Probably could not be achieved with the mere use of a solution of chloroform since it would probably still not be enough to preserve the eyes, but maybe some chloroform with ethyl alcohol? I indeed canot imagine how they preserved the eyes since thats insanely hard to do. Maybe the whole point of the experiment wasnt to study the brain but to study body preservation? The interest in preserving the body after death was much greater in the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th, so it is not difficult to imagine that some preservation techniques using chemicals were lost with the end of interest in this art.

This reminds me of the Mutter Museum. That head is quite real. The level of preservation is amazing. You can even see the irises and pupils of the eyes clearly.

Thank you so much for making this. I’ve never heard of stories like this before. This reminds me in a way of a mansion that opened up after a 100 years of being closed that had frogs in things like this. Can’t remember the name of the house or mansion but it was pretty cool. I believe his head is real. I don’t think you could get a face to look that good even in todays world!

Sounds like Anne Rice's "Witching Hour" except that was a New Orleans mansion with severed human heads that they found a couple hundred years later in a secret room. Awesome book!

This kept popping up and my morbid curiosity finally got the better of me, and what a fascinating story! It's remarkable how well preserved Diego is for his age, looking at him is like looking back in time. Has he ever been examined with x-rays or MRIs to see what the extent of his injury was?🤔

Diego doesn't have that typical criminal physiognomy we see so often in mugshots. Might be the soaking in formaldehyde.

Ron, I am again WOWED by your storytelling. Not only your telling of the story itself, but the WAY you tell it. Your quiet tome of voice and slow, careful pacing really up the creepy factor, and really bring the story to life! Erm, no pun intended, lol. Also, I just wanted to say that, though total voiceover isn't your usual video style, I loved this just as much as any of your other videos! You are an amazing storyteller. I bet your kids/geandkids loved/love it, when you read them bedtime stories!
