Bill Murray said about this movie: "there should have been a day of mourning for American comedy the day that movie came out, because it was the supreme achievement of modern comedy". And the man knows what he is talking about. This movie is a true masterpiece.
This old Aussie has Kung Fu Hustle on DVD for years, a feature of the DVD is English dubbed & English subtitles at the same time, that gives the movie a different dimension.. Spoken & printed words, different yet the same meaning. Good fun.
6:42 - Writer/Director/Actor Stephen Chow's previous movie "Shaolin Soccer" was a big hit so when he pops the soccer ball and says "No more soccer!" it was him telling the audience it's time to move on! LOL.
"No More Soccer" is his first line, when he deflated the kids ball. His previous film was "Shaolin Soccer", just as over the top, and hilarious as this one. "Kung Fu Hustle", is one of my all time favorite movies.
I love that there's all these little hints that our hapless protagonist is more than he seems from the start - him managing to outrun Landlady, his rapid healing...which means the pamphlet he got as a kid really did work, he just had a body out of wack - that's why him getting everything rearranged and then healed by Landlady made him invincible.
No matter how many times, I watch it, the story of the boy and the girl & especially the end scene always gets me. Without saying a word, she was such an effective actress. (Including her younger self (whoever actually played her )) Each time I see this, I say to myself, "Please don't get old. Don't let this be the day, where I am so used to the film that I don't laugh or cry as much and therefore enjoy it slightly less." I even tempt fate by seeing it quite a few times per year. I think it's about to edge out Galaxy Quest as my most watched film. That's quite a feat, since I used to be quite a Star Wars nut.
Exactly, some reactors even laugh when they see that boy being beaten and urinated on his head, and that made me sick and immediately closed the video. Furthermore, when he mocked the girl on the tram, his laughter actually revealed confusion and sadness, and that requires strong empathy to feel. I'm glad to see the most suitable feeling in this video.
Stephen Chow is so underrated (in Western countries). Here in Asia, everybody knows him and his legendary partner Ng Man Tat (RIP). They've been in the industry from the late 80s' and producing great numbers of this consistent comedy-action-drama movie style...
I saw this movie when I was 15, by myself, it was released shortly in the USA I think summer of 2004? Anyways, my friends didn't want to see it, so I went alone. The next week forced them to come see it, bought their tickets and all. They loved Steven Chow, the director is am absolute genius. The fight scene where the three masters reveal their skills, the 12 kicks. guys, the punching guy and. the Bo staff guy... absolutely genius.
The scene with the landlady in the car doing the hand gestures to the boss of the gang was from a Bruce Lee movie. I can't remember which one, but definitely remember the scene. It's cool that you had fun with Kung Fu Hustle. Somehow, it's a very polarizing film. You caught the cartoon/looney tunes vibe and if you watched those as a kid, you'd kind of get this movie. Shaolin Soccer from Stephen Chow (main lead from this movie..who started off as a stuntman, the landlady line about him towards the end of this movie was an inside joke) was also good.
@@AlandaParker Best wardrobe award goes to: Landlord in the casino scene, can't touch the lime-green alligator loafers, though the silk pajama look is up there.
Wow, I’ve watched a video and a half and I think this might be the best reaction channel on RU-vid. Pretty cool to find someone who is culturally literate but who hasn’t already seen everything and isn’t a know-it-all. Subscribed.
36:03 "Or a stuntman more likely!" Love the fact that Stephen Chow, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, and tons more all literally started most of their film careers by being extras and doing stunts.
Fun fact: The landlord and landlady, were the martial art big brother and sister (classmate) of Jacky Chen in real life during their teenage years. The landlady, Yuen Qiu, was in the James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun. She was one of the school girls who save Bond when escaping from the Karate school. Her husband the landlord was played by Yuen Wah, who was Bruce Lee's stunt double in Enter The Dragon. When you see Bruce doing the acrobatic tumbling and back flip, that was actually Yuen Wah.
jet li was a kungfu master (like nationally ranked fighter) before he started his career in film. jackie chan was always a trained stuntman. the difference is not known by a lot of western audiences since jackie chan has branded himself as a real fighter.
Kung Fu Hustle is my 3rd favorite movie of all-time... So many great hidden Easter Eggs and Subtle References right from Jump. The opening credits has the Butterfly which is a reference to the main character played by Stephen Chow of his metamorphosis. The 3 Masters, the 1st time you see the Coolie, he kicks the sack of grain onto his shoulders foreshadowing his kicking ability. The first shot of Donut he's rolling out Congee with his staffs all around his shop. When Tailor is introduced, his Rings are shown prominently in his boutique. When the Landlord 1st appears, he drinks Fluid and slinks around the neighborhood relaxed. His power is Fluidity and Flexibility, like water. The Landlady 1st appears and she's screaming which foreshadows her abilities, and lastly the Beast, when he's sitting on the toilet, all around his room are Frogs... This movie is brilliant. Stephen Chow has made other movies, none as good as this or Shaolin Soccer. Kung Fu Hustle is his Magnum Opus
@@AlandaParker the ice cream seller whom u said was stunning has acted in another movie named "The Sorcerer and the White Snake". Her external beauty is unmatched imo
*I first saw this movie with my Sister in NY! My Sister is no longer here and I left NY long ago but I still have the memories. Thanks for the reaction!*
@@tobywijaya2982 Chinese Odyssey Part 1. Pandora box and Part 2. Cinderella are both considered to be classics. People's views of the movies change with time as they watched these 2 movies. The first perception would probably be that they are comedies but later viewing like a decade or more later, they would believe that the movies are actually tragedies and subsequent viewing might change again . . . that they impart some philosophies of life.
Glad you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle. It is somewhat of an underrated and sometime overlooked terrific comedy film. Stephen Chow is a comedic genius and not to worry Chow says the sequel to Kung Fu Hustle will be released someday or in the near future LOL! Great reaction as always. You should take a side trip thru the Mel Brooks universe with Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs if you haven't already seen them.
House of Flying Daggers is another one by Zhang Yimou featuring Zhang Ziyi, EXCELLENT film with great fight scenes! I agree that CTHD is a vital choice for the martial arts genre and Chocolate truly rocked my world!
@16:20 You said “nonsense”. This group, lead by Stephen Chow, had been making films for years and they created their own genre in Hong Kong which is called “Nonsense”.
Starting at 17:07 of this video is the chase sequence and the music accompanying that sequence is known as “Zigeunerweisen.” If you have not watched this piece be played, it’s a must see. There are several arrangements here on YT and the song(particularly the violin solo) is generally so chaotic but oh so fun. I hope some of ya take the chance to watch it, really makes you appreciate those that dedicate their time to their particular craft. Edit: The slower song in the scene that follows the chase sequence is another movement in this song too.
Thank you so much for this!! I’ll def be lookin it up! I played the viola for 8 years. Even though I haven’t been in an orchestra for a long time, I love to watch one
I am so happy to see more people reacting to this underrated comedy diamond! I used to watch it at least twice a day everyday while I was in college back in 2004-05. The epic fail of a knife throwing assassination attempt & epic foot chase is my favorite scene in the film. It never ceases to make me laugh.
One of the only movies I can watch multiple times in one sitting. Glad you liked it, your reaction was fun. I have a martial arts movie suggestion - Five Deadly Venoms (1978).
Another kung-fu classic that switched back and forth between goofball comedy and touching drama--albeit neither as _intensely_ goofball nor heartwrenching--was _Last Hero in China_ AKA _Claws of Steel,_ starring Jet Li in his prime. It's a riot.
Best kung Fu movie ever! I grew up watching kung Fu movies. Comparing this to those movies is like comparing a model T to a Tesla. Steven Chou raised the game. So fun, stylish and unexpectedly full of heart.
You had a good time! If you want to see a very good movie, watch "Train to Busan" , regarded as one of the best zombie movies in its genre. Unlike the typical mindless zombie movie, this South Korean international hit has great character development, one of the great performances by a child actress, social commentary, and keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout. A movie that you will not forget. Even connoisseurs of zombie movies who are skeptical, love this movie.
One of my all time favorite movies; I’ve seen it so many times!!!! And I still bawl my eyes out every single time I watch it! I’m also a huge fan of the Korean zombie Netflix show Kingdom. If you like Train to Busan I highly recommend it! Another incredible balance of beauty, action, and emotive power.
Tell you more, Yuen Qui(landlady) this was her first film in 20 years. She wasn't even going to take this role, she was bringing a protege to audition and Stephen Chow begged her. She attended the Peking Opera House which is essentially a school that teaches theater, acting, gymnastics, martial arts, etcetera. She attended with many legends including Jackie Chan & Yuen Wah(her husband in the film) Danny Chan(Sum/Axe gang leader) has an uncanny resemblance to Bruce Lee. So much so he parodied him in Steven Chow's Shaolin Soccer. He would go on to portray Bruce Lee in Ip Man 3 & 4 as well as The legend of Bruce Lee. When the landlady said Sing would probably be good as a Stuntman. She was talking about her husband in the film, who is predominantly a stuntman. Stephen Chow would create one more movie called CJ7 which was really good, in 2008. Then he retired from acting focusing on writing and directing
Ok... I've not had a movie reaction have my whole body hurting from laughing so hard! This is one of my favorite all time movies, and you had me see it totally different from what I'm used to... thank you! Liked and subscribed!
Your reaction to this movie was truly an absolute joy to watch. Seeing people discover this movie for this first time and appreciating its unique style of comedy always puts a smile on my face. Even though I've seen this movie numerous times, your lovely comments and jokes throughout made the experience of going through it again so fun and refreshing. I immediately subscribed to your channel the second the video ended and I'm looking forward to working through all your previous reactions. If you're looking for more Kung fu/Martial Arts Chinese films, I highly recommend Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero (2002). These two movies in particular are some of the very best that the country and genre have to offer.
One of my favorite movies. Always happy to see someone else enjoy it for the first time. The crushed soccer ball bit at the beginning is a reference to Chow's prior film "Shaolin Soccer." People had been clamoring for a sequel, but Chow didn't want to make one. Hence, "No more soccer!" If you enjoyed this one, I'd definitely recommend putting Shaolin Soccer on the to-watch list eventually.
"Are you shitting on a paper towel?!" Gurl, this sent me 😂😂😂😂. You are amazing. Discovered you cause I'm a Scream fan and loved your reaction to the series (can't wait till you do a video from Scream '22), and fell in love with your charisma and been bingeing ever since. You are #blaxcellence embodied my sister, such a gorgeous articulated woman, and an amazing creator with such sharp wit and biting finesse. Love watching you do horror. May the universe bring you all the success you deserve and much more! 🤞🏾🍀🙏🏾 Sending you a lotta luv from Brazil 🇧🇷!! 😘❤️😘
This movie is hilarious! I really like the "Looney Tunes" vibe of it. After Bruce Lee films, may I suggest Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Michelle Yeoh, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen films please? Shaolin Soccer is another good one.
Now this is a reaction! None of that fake pretend know it all talk over scenes. You’re genuine and funny, and you actually watch, you get a subscriber! ^o^
Loved it. Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movies are really good. They're comedies, not to this level, but still. Drunken Master and The Legend of the Drunken Master. Also, I would love to see True Grit. I recommend the 2010 Coen brothers version as it is beautiful, but the 1969 John Wayne version is not bad.
Absolutely loved this reaction! One of my all time favourite movies! I wonder if you might consider watching my #1 favourite "Synecdoche, New York". It's a mind-bending dark philosophical comedy.
About 40 years ago in many impoverished countries in East Asia there was tremendous economic development. And then these countries have gradually become strong and balanced with economic power with Europe and North America. Cinema and movies at this time were also symbols of that miraculous economic development.
A great martial arts movie is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Excellent acting and action. It's in Cantonese and is an action adventure. Definitely highly recommend it.
And she’s doing it to the guy that played the Lee character in Shaolin Soccer and played Lee in I think it was a TV show about Lee’s life. Double funny.
If you like this movie then you might like a movie called Shaolin Soccer made by the same people who made this movie. It was released in 2001 and stars Stephen Chow who is the protagonist from this movie.
The Good, The Bad, The Weird is a great Korean comedy action film that I highly recommend. The Host is an awesome Korean monster film about family and survival with bits of comedy sprinkled in I also recommend!
