Back on a thrill ride with Arnold Schwarzenegger as our Apex Predator! If you love gruesome practical effects and iridescent killers, then you'll love this movie reaction to Predator!
"Just because your gorgeous and you have that bombass mustache don't mean you should be running shit, you lied to everybody. " BEST QUOTE OF 2021 HANDS DOWN 🏆
@ind0ctr1n3 The original actor that was replaced was Jean-Claude Van Damme, working in a very different predator design. The Predator was redesigned and Kevin Peter Hall was brought in to fill the suit. Director John McTiernan gave him the cameo as the pilot as he felt he had to let Hall get his face in the film after sweating in the suit without complaint for weeks during filming.
It's a minor detail in many ways, but I also like the ending of this movie. In most movies with big, tough action heroes, they just put on sunglasses and walk away, still cool and unaffected by the events that went down. But here, on that helicopter ride home, you can see Dutch genuinely fatigued and traumatized, just processing everything internally, and grieving for his fallen men/friends. Just an empty, tired man. It adds a sense of realism to the whole thing.
And I love this comment. And yet, in the end, Dutch wasn't defeated (and you do get the idea he'll survive this trauma) and you know he is going to pass on his knowledge of the Predator to the appropriate people. Things on Earth just changed massively, whether the military/govt keeps it a secret or not. I think some in the comments below are overthinking the effect (or at least the intention) of this movie. I don't think it's an antiwar per-se. It does seem to be saying there are worse things in the Universe than man and that we are lucky we fight each other, and not, say , these Predators. So yeah... War is hell. Esp war against extra-terrestrial hunters :)
Yes I always got the impression that the close up on his face was PTSD setting in. This was the mission in which he lost everyone. Contrast that with the action firefight at the beginning where he is making one liners after a couple of kills, and nonchalantly lights up a victory cigar. By the end Dutch has survived, but is broken. And it took an Alien to finally humble the great Arnold!
The actor who played the predator did an amazing job with his body acting and giving the predator a personality. He also played in the second movie... Unfortunately we lost him in a very stupid medical accident. He was really a great loss to the franchise because they never made a better predator since then.
The little scene of the Predator caressing Billy's skull is really interesting, and makes me wish we could have seen Billy and the Predator fight hand to hand to see what earned him such an admiring touch.
I totally agree about Billy and the Predator fight. He is a supporting character with a lot of backstory that is covered in the Predator novelization. It’s been over 30 years but I do remember this: Billy is only part Native American and doesn’t really believe in a lot of his ancestral mysticism. He doesn’t know he is descended from a long line of medicine men. But when the Predator something outside of our normal world shows up all of his latent mystic senses go into overdrive. That’s why he spends the entire movie kinda in a fog. The pouch on his neck was given to him by his grandfather to protect him in battle. Once again he didn’t really believe in this stuff. But he kept his promise to always wear it. Ironically you see in his last stand he takes it off and wraps it around his blade. I guess to make sure that he can get at least one good stab in before he died.
What earned the caressing and his skull trophy is that Billy was a tracker who sensed his presents and Billies termination. Also Billy stood his ground to face him
18:06 That was a really moving and heartfelt monologue by Bill Duke. He doesn't get enough credit for his acting in that scene. All the characters are so well done that I wouldn't have minded a prequel that showed some of their backstories. 28:45 Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator when they fought hand-to-hand, but it was Arnold who said that wouldn't make any sense. He said "He's a monster. I'm just a man," so it was rewritten with the Predator kicking Dutch's butt and Dutch having to outsmart it to survive. There weren't a lot 1980's action stars whose egos would have let themselves definitively lose a fight for the sake of a better story. "Predator 2" isn't as good as the original, but I still think it's very good. "Predators" is just okay and pretty forgettable. The Alien/Predator crossovers are quite disappointing but watchable if you've got nothing else to do. "The Predator" is not good. Your reactions are great, so watching you react to even a bad movie would be interesting.
@@yt45204 What other strong guy has managed his career to become one of the highest paid actors ever, and then moved on to high political office? Arnold has brains AND brawn.
@@JnEricsonx And inexperience. The predator made a fatal assumption that his wounded prey was helpless and came in too close. It's shown in alien vs predator that the predators have a hierarchy of skill. I assumed the one Danny Glover beat was less experienced.
I really wish they didn't open with a shot of the ship dropping the Predator off on the planet. If you don't know it's an alien going in, this movie would have a hell of a twist halfway through.
@@Rastafaustian Hell yeah, even moreso with The Thing. Whenever I've shown someone The Thing for the first time, I always skip past that scene so they're always shocked when it becomes an alien movie and not a movie about some guys going crazy in Antarctica.
"Cowboys and Aliens" is similarly undermined by its title. If it had been called simply "Absolution" after the town (and certain plot elements) it would open as basically a regular western with only Jake's curious wristband giving a clue that anything extraordinary awaits. Though from what I understand, the graphic novel that it's adapted from is far wackier and suits the silly title.
You know what? I always used to think it was poor writing, letting that thing have a human sounding laugh. But you reminded me, for the first time, that it actually did record Billy's laugh earlier in the movie. Good stuff.
People might tell you Predator 2 sucks, but don't let that dissuade you. It's a bit of a step down in quality, but it also has some interesting concepts and is a good evolution of the series.
I used to think that the predator was laughing at Arnold because he was going to die too, now I wonder if it was actually laughing at itself for being dumb enough to get killed by an animal
It accomplished several things with that laugh. It scared the one that slew him, it warned his honorable opponent that bested him (which would be fitting with the Yautja's (Predator) character) and finally it conveyed his small victory of denying him the prize of a corpse and technology to prove their existence, not to mention avoid making the human civilization advance from the Predator's own failure.
@@BFCrusader I totaly agree about denying humans their technology. In the second movie’s novelization they cover what each Predator is supposed to do in case of failure on a hunt.
the beauty of this horror movie, the monster wasnt chasing and killing teenagers. the first third of the film shows how competent and dangerous Dutch and his guys are.
Also surprised people by putting Arnold in the main role who wasn't known for anything other than big action movies and sci fi. Flipped the whole action bravado genre on its head
Yes tell a friend. Ive been watching her since Galaxy Quest (beggining of year approximately) . She is just naturally funny. She has many more Alanaisms. Terminator, Terminator 2, Tremors are good ones
A little thing that I love about this movie but no one really mentions, it’s basically a slasher film but instead of drunk teenagers it’s 80s action movie heroes, the kinds of characters who take out armies so the fact the predator is just taking them down all the more intimidating. Also check out the film “killer Klowns from Outer Space” it’s the epitome of B movie fun
This movie was in production hell. They needed a rewrite half way through shooting the movie, that's when they brought in Shane Black. Because he was writing the movie as they filmed, they cast him as Hawkins so he could be on set while writing. One night, in the hotel, Black was trying to come up with the ending of the movie. He had planned out this big cat and mouse fight sequence, but he couldn't figure out how Arnold was going to kill the Predator. After a few hours of suffering from writer's block, Black decided to take a break and watch some tv. He sat back and watched some Looney Toons, and there he got his inspiration for the ending. He killed off the Predator with a Wile E. Coyote gag. 🤣
I love the Predator movies. Everyone trash talks Predator 2 but I think it is underrated. Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, Morten Downey and Gary Busey before he mutated. Solid action flick with a lot of personality.
Winston only came into the picture at the last second after the director wasn't happy with the original insectoid design that they'd already been filming with (which was originally played by none other than Jean Claude VanDamme)
@@Enrique-Garcia Yeah, and Winston was key in turning that Gigan-ripoff looking thing into the mandibled dreadlocked mountain of awesome that is the Predator :D
This is one of my all time favorite 80s flicks that I will still rewatch today. Fun fact Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original actor in the alien suit but due to various reasons he bowed out.
@@-M0LE that was more or less the plan. The idea was that Van Damme's Predator would use its speed and agility to outmaneuver the humans before striking
"He cuttin down acreage" One of the all time best lines I have ever heard a reactor say to this scene. Just fantastic! Btw, the actor who played Hawkins (AKA the guy with glasses that died first) wrote: Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
The great thing about Predator is that all the military guys think they're in an action movie, and realise too late it's more like a jungle-based slasher. The sequels vary a lot in quality but are mostly worth watching, I'd say :) As for recommendations - have you ever seen Candyman? Tony Todd's most legendary role.
You were right about the Predator wanting a “Mano y Mano.” Yauta have a strict honor based warrior culture, so when one finds something that can be a genuine challenge or threat, it’s like Christmas come early for them.
Well, they say they're honorable, while using a cloak and advanced sensors and a plasma cannon to get the kill before their prey even knows they're there. So it's more like if you were hunting deer, and a stag got up on its hind legs and challenged you to fisticuffs.
I was lucky enough to visit the Predator filming location back in 2015. It's now a zip-line tourist attraction just outside of Puerto Vallarta. The enemy camp seen at 8:06 is now a restaurant. They even have a life-sized statue of the Predator there!
Definitely the mark of a great movie. She says “what is going on??” and moments later it’s clear what’s going on. Seeing you easily snap to what’s happening really shows the skill of the movie makers.
This is a modern retelling of the medieval tale of Beowulf - a military commander who unknowingly brings his troops into a kingdom where an invisible monster kills soldiers every night.
Holy moly, in the last 30 odd years I've seen this movie more times than I can count and I've read and seen every adaptation of Beowulf I can find; and I've never made that connection.
Your reactions are hilarious and insightful at the same time. Some FYI for you the black helicopter pilot you saw at the end was Kevin Peter Hall ( RIP ) he was also the PREADTOR. At 7'2" plus the costume Hall made a very imposing creature. Actually Jean Claude Van Damme was hired to play the creature but was unhappy with the role and so he dropped out or was fired. So with a redesigned costume Hall was chosen to play the Predator. Hall complained that it was so difficult to actually see anything while in costume that during the fight scenes with Arnold he would sometimes actually hit him when he wasn't supposed to and vice versa. The movie was filmed in Hawaii.
That log wasn't actually the trap. The log was supposed to drop and the rope was supposed to wrap around the Predator's foot and pull him up into the spikes.
Shane Black, had wrote the screenplay for the movie Lethal Weapon. They casted him here so that he would be available to make on-the-fly and uncredited script changes while on set.
I know a lot of people hated Dillon at least early in the movie, but he didn't ask them to do anything he wasn't willing to do. He was there with them after all. And he was there to find his men.
2:47 - yeah, Arnie. You and your team completely slaughtered that one camp bar one person 'cause you're a rescue team. Still, the design of the creature is en pointe to this day.
I saw this in college.. literally last century! You have to watch predator 2 now with another great: Danny glover, bill Paxton, Gary busey, Ruben blades, a lot of fun...
Love the videos. As far as the sequels go: 2 is underrated, in my opinion; Predators is basically a really well done and well cast rehash of the first, and The Predator...exists...
Yeah. Predator mimicking it's prey makes him that much scarier. It's both intimidating 😳 and taunting at the same time. Predator using Billy's laugh before self-destructing was wild. -OG
In the late 1980s/early 1990s there were a slew of tie-in books that expanded the concepts of the Predators and their culture. Due to us always seeing the Predators from human perspective in the movies most of it may not be canon. The Predators are a highly advanced space faring race that dominated all of the species on their planet and pretty much wherever they have gone. They view the universe as one big set piece of Darwinism - beat or be beaten, eat or be eaten. For them the hunt isn’t just for sport. For their young it’s a right of passage. For their culture at large it’s a way to reconnect with their ancient past. They see other species in terms of meat - soft or hard. A soft meat species is one easy to kill while a hard meat specie is one that is difficult to kill. Humans if memory serves me are considered soft. With this in mind I view the final square up with Arnold this way. From the Predators POV it wasn’t a macho/chest thumping thing to fight him with basic weapons it was a sign of respect. Arnold was clearly the alpha of the group. So the Predator killed all of the betas despite their attempts to stop it. Now with everyone else gone the Predator would now give Arnold somewhat of a fair shot at a fight. It was probably surprised as heck to finally encounter a soft human tough enough and crafty enough to survive. Hence if asking “What the hell are you?” The next movie is definitely worth it and adds to some of the things I’ve mentioned.
When Anna explains what the Predator is, I was like "You couldn't have mentioned that earlier?" I don't think political shit matters anymore when you're fighting a fucking alien
The guy cracking jokes the whole movie is Shane Black. He directed a movie called The Nice Guys with Russell Crow and Ryan Gosling. Definitely worth watching.
"Just two brothers in the beast" 😂😂🤣🤣 Right sis. "Bitch, I see you Wrinkle In Time looking ass" 😂😂 You be killing me. You quick with it, sis. Great reaction once again.
I always loved the soft "growling" of the Predator, and the fact that the creature is a sport hunter. Sparing the unarmed. Fun fact: Kevin Peter Hall (the Predator) can also be seen in the end (unmasked) with a cameo as a chopper pilot.
Billy: “There’s something out there waiting for us, and it ain’t no man. We’re all going to died.” Dillon: “The mans losing it. He’s loses his cool.” Me: Even scared, Billy still says that line pretty cool. Start crapping your pants too lol.
Only reason he took off his mask was to make himself weaker to make the fight fairer. They breath more methane on their planet, he was still MUCH stronger, but with the mask it's not even fun for them.
I can't get enough of you and your reactions! You're TouTube's best kept secret and have quickly become my favorite. Gorgeous, funny as hell, sassy, insightful and on point with the witty quips... you keep this up, and your channel's gonna blow up. Keep going with the Predator series. They're all good.
Awesome reaction. I've seen this movie more times than I can remember, but I never realized that the Alien was using Billy's laugh at the end. Keep up the good work. : )
Arnold didn’t plan to use the log as a weapon. It was just the counterweight to the rope which would pull the Predator into the spikes. He just got lucky AF!
Predators, or Yautja as their race is known, are very similar to Aztecs when it comes to their kills. It isn't just about "the thrill of the kill" as you described, it's also the idea of the more kills you make, the more prestige you gain in their society. Most of their fallen opponents they just skin and leave the bodies hanging, but if their defeated opponent put up a really good fight, they "honor" that hunt by ripping out the skull and spinal column and keeping that as a trophy. However, they also have a policy of "never allow yourself to be captured, or our technology to fall into the wrong hands", which is why they will often program their wrist computer to self-destruct if they are defeated.
They needed an enemy intimidating enough to go up against Arnold's muscles 💪. They got 7' 3" tall Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator. And boy did he come through! Kevin also played Bigfoot in Harry and the Henderson's. -OG
Thank You for not including the F slur scene at the beginning in the chopper! Ps. Your content is awesome! Its been fun seeing your first time reactions, and perspectives, on films that I grew up Watching, and Loving!
