Finally after so much time and so many videos I found someone who explained the histagram in details and showed how to use it in practice. Now I know how to implement it in my photography. It has always been a mystery to me, but not anymore. Thank you so much!

I had exactly the same thought. So many videos don't explain properly how to read it, and reprimand you for going too much to the left or right when it is actually just an objective reading on whether their are underexposed and overexposed areas.

I know it's been some time since uploading this video, but maybe someone would see my comment. I'm an complete amateur starting taking photos, but I've got basic grasp of exposure triangle. Besides histograms, I tried to figure out captions of each photo and I wonder why this purposefully overexposed one ( 9:01 of video ) is being shot on ISO 500? It's overexposed already because of the reflecting sun, so was it set like this to make it overexposed even more to reach that effect? Thanks for any answer! Love the guide and those photos !

wow!! I was so lost on my dji air 3 drone that has a live instogram gragh and my pictures and videos are terrible. And the learning expose slightly to the right and fix later. Can't wait to go out again now that I understand it. THANK YOU!

I may of missed this, but are these techniques only applicable to raw files? Can I do this with Fuji x100 jpg files?

Yep, the Histograms applies to all files. With the X100 I believe you can display the histogram when playing back images.

@photogenius What does one do if the exposure meter is centered/if the picture is properly exposed but the histogram shows peaks in the shadows and highlights? Do I just try fix it/balance it out in Lightroom?

Great video, Paul. Histograms may not be something that is used all the time, but good photographers appreciate and know how to use all the tools available to them. Some photographers in the comments never use this tool, and that's fine. They shouldnt criticize you for explaining it. I appreciate the explanation and application. Thank you.

Hi, as I look at some of my pictures with the histogram. My histograms are all white no color. Is that ok?

Don't worry if the histogram is one colour, the display will be different depending on the camera model. Paul

Great job. I'm a beginner when it comes to histograms, tho I'm not a beginner to photography. I got interested in histograms when my brother dramatically improved a telephoto bird photo I'd taken. So... I assume the bottom border of the histogram represents 0 lux and the top is 255? It's not clear.

Paul, can I set histogram prior to taking photos?

Yes Jeff, the histogram is determined by the cameras settings (aperture, shutter and ISO). So prior to taking a photo if you change any of these settings the histogram will adjust.

So you change the histogram in the computer?

If you use editing software, then if you adjust (for example) the brightness of an image, the histogram will adjust accordingly. You don't adjust the histogram directly. Hope that helps.

Very helpful explanation - thank you! A question - is it possible to use the histogram successfully for external flash/off-camera photography? A problem I have found is that the histogram looks good on the camera lcd, but when I later review it on the computer monitor it appears to be much, much darker. I should add that I have only just begun experimenting with my first speedlight.

Some of what you say makes no sense to me. In the dark tower photo around 8:42 you only have shadows and midtones. I can clearly see there are bright lights in the photo yet there is nothing on the historgraph showing anything bright or white ish. So as the teacher of the this lesson you have not explained and just kind of passed over that. You only have blacks and shadows on you histo yet there is bright lights in the photo. Can you explain that please?

So, theres a live histogram in a camera, but should we take a picture when the live histogram assumes a good shape? Which shape it should be? Moving to the right for future lightroom editing? What if we adjust the camera settings to achieve a good histogram without future editing on lightroom? How the histogram should be look like? Thx

WOW!! Thank you so very much. Your explanations of the histogram is amazing. Your use of photos and showing of the histogram really helped me, for I learn visually and this was perfect. The showing of how we could use the exposure meter in live view matching with the histogram, I learned a lot. This is a practice I need to apply when shooting. Very educational for someone who is still fairly new to the DSLR side. Thank you again.

Hi Paul, just a fun fact 8:23 you show the Eiffel tower at night. Just pointing out ludicrous copyright rules. Apparently the supplier of the lights holds copyright to any night images of the tower but no such restrictions at daytime. The same applies with other landmarks including the Sydney Opera House however it is day and night with the exception of showing it in a larger context as part of Sydney Harbour. How silly is that?

Hi Paul. Thank you for your videos, they are great. I just have one question. Landscape photography generally is a where one keeps the image as realistic as possible. Obviously the sun or sunlight is almost aways represented in this style of photography. The sun will tend to be bright and all the gurus tend to froth at the mouth while ranting "...you've blown out the whites...". Is one one to honestly represent sun light or tell more lies than a Chinese diplomat while presenting your photographic story?

So that's what my cameras have been telling me all this time! Even my little pocket "Instamatic" style camera has this feature. It also would make sense of areas of the preview image, which flash, presumably to point out where the exposure error is? One thing I do need, is a decent photo editor.
