More about the event:
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:
Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present
To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year.

Look forward to yours and Bill’s video on The First Civil War. You have to do it. I have enjoyed the other ones and you Bill have done!

I'm going to give "A Crisis of Peace: George Washington, the Newburgh Conspiracy, and the Fate of the American Revolution" a go this month. I'm not familiar with the conspiracy - and I grew-up about 15 miles from Newburgh / New Windsor. I came to the 2023 historiathon - party late. Looking forward to next year because now I have a pile of possibilities waiting.

Conquistadors and Aztecs!! 🙌I'll also be reading about the fall of the Aztecs!! (You actually pronounced Tenochtitlan pretty well when you were reading the blurb of the book). I like the idea of faith and religious reading for historathon. Not precisely the same, but as for the history of christianity, I'll be reading a book about the spiritual conquest of México. (My focus will be the fall of the Aztecs and New Spain).

I'd probably start with the J Edwards study. The one on the conquistadors sounds interesting too.

Wow! Didn't know you had a copy of the late Ray Huang's masterpiece!! So my vote is for 1587, A Year of No Significance, still considered in the China history field to be one of the classic works of Chinese history!! (Don't tell anyone but I have yet to read it myself LOL). Note that he was also shot in the thigh during the Burma campaign in WW2 and attended the US Army Staff College before becoming a historian which should also tick lots of boxes LOL!

I JUST looked up how to say this 2 days ago - i was reading the Lord Eight Deer book. the ones i found say it Te - NOSH - teet - lan. I definitely have more added to my TBR! I am going to look for Alexander of Russia and Conquistadors and Aztecs. Great choices!

Just don't say Tea-knock-teet-land, like I did teaching a nineteen-seventies high school history and was rewarded with the dreaded eye roll by a Hispanic student, more like Ta-nosh-ta-lon, but absent time travel who really knows how the natives of an old civilization pronounced, but I took her word for it. Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, George marries a wealthy widow, good decision George, a devoted wife.❤

A nice selection of books. I've never heard of a book like Brooding Over Bloody Revenge before. It sounds like and interesting read.

My focus for Q3 is Indian history, including the Mughal Empire, the Maratha Empire and the Sikh Empire.

But when I studied Chinese I did an essay on the "shoots of capitalism" theory which was held early on by Mao during the People's Republic of China and that looked at late Ming / early Qing China so I would have been interested in 1587.
