My thought is that the doctor that they have on sight is more for triage whereas maybe the type of doctor they needed would be more for surgical purposes. Maybe.
Actually, in the Disney+ version... Burr just turns around and directs the doctor to Lee. Or something like that, the doctor was already there, but Washington just said it to clarify things, I guess...
I believe that one major reason why Hamilton doesn’t want to get closer to Washington is because of daddy issues.... like his father left him alone at a very young age so I could imagine why that would be hard for him
I learned why Lafayette named one of his kids after George Washington, he said that Washington was like a father to him after his parents died when he was about 6, I think. I looked him up on Wikipedia and I checked the sources, but his story is interesting. *SIGH* I wish a musical was made about our favorite fightong Frenchman..... that would be so cool! Love these reactions, even though I just started getting into the Hamildom. (Hamilton fandom)
Wait really? I mean. i saw some people saying that too, that there should'v been a musical about Lafayette since he seemed to have an interesting life. Something about an alligator? i might look it up later
Man I just LOVE how you explain the actual personalities of these people, instead of just throwing random historical facts. It makes them more real to me, more than just exagerated characters on a play. Great job. I wish these videos were a lot longer though.
9:00 Miranda is really great at integrating those kinds of allusions, like in "What'd I Miss" when Jefferson gets a letter and says "Sally be a lamb, darlin’, won’tcha open it?" I love that stuff.
Great point about the medic for the General and the doctor already being on site and paid in advance. I thought about this for a bit and MAYBE it's because Washington showed up abruptly and wasn't privy to the fact that there was already a doctor on site? It's a stretch and I'm really reaching here! Lol.
That's what it felt like when seeing the musical. Like I think Burr goes to the medic and brings him over in a weird hush hush way. Kind of like still giving the doctor deniability while someone so far removed from the duel (Washington) comes up but idk honestly
My thought is that the doctor that they have on sight is more for triage whereas maybe the type of doctor they needed would be more for surgical purposes. Maybe.
It probably has something to do with the doctor maybe being a civilian doctor and Washington would want a military doctor or medic to handle Lee's injuries
I think the whole thing about the doctor and washington, is that washington wanted to help lee, so the song doesn't try to be chronological, it's just trying to show what a merciful man washington was, and even tho lee talked crap about him, he still wanted to help him. And what's really interesting in the Hamilton washington dynamic as presented in the play is that washington was a very paternal figure to his subordinates and Hamilton was not looking for any sort of relationship and also he had people letting him down his entire life, especially the male figures in his life and he learned to handle everything by himself. By the time he was connected to washington, he just wanted to fight, and this man was standing in his way trying to protect him instead of letting him fight, was terrible for him. That's the thing about Hamilton he just wanted to keep moving all the time, and washington stopped him from that.
I love how Washington is portrayed in the musical, because as a resident of his family's hometown (Sunderland, where the hometown was actually renamed to Washington after the family, and became a Borough of Sunderland in the late 1860s. So, fun fact, Washington would have had a slightly Scottish sounding accent, as would Hamilton, whose father was from Scotland itself) it helps me connect to him, and see him as someone human and not this weird God whose image was twisted into something different
that's why I love stories about Washington-the statues and images of him in the capital just....it's just a little off putting. But actually LEARNING about Washington the MAN just....it makes me respect him so much. I'd like for history to take him down a couple notches but I can understand why he's on such a high pedestal being the first president and all.
His father was forced to leave to protect Hamilton's mother from bigamy charges (her first husband refused a divorce, and claiming to be a prostitute was a far lesser crime than bigamy. She wasn't actually a sex worker), but Hamilton did stay in contact with his father via letters until his death. In fact, the letter referenced in the play that got Hamilton his scholarship was written to his father, and not intended for publication. But yeah, going from being considered the child of nobility to being considered the child of a whore would have done a number on him.
My mom and I always theorized that hamilton pushed washington away because he had abandonment issues from his dad leaving. This is also probably why hamilton did not go to his resignation or something like that. Mind you this information is coming from a book that took some liberties but I found, for the most part, to be accurate. The book is My Dear Hamilton by Laura Kaye and Stephanie Dray.
Especially when Washington and Lafayette interact, considering in this video, he mentions Lafayette and George Washington's adorable father-son relationship.
Caroline Mcgovern unfortunately you don’t see hardly any of that in Hamilton. The only conversation Washington and Lafayette have in Hamilton is about getting Hamilton back
Thomas Conway was shot by Gen. John Cadwalader. Cadwalader, Chernow writes, “fired a ball through Conway's mouth that came out of the back of his head…. 'I have stopped the damned rascal's lying tongue at any rate,' he observed as his opponent lay in agony on the ground.”
Always gonna come for the Hamilton ones. Ham himself is such a spitfire in the musical is great. The history behind all of Hamilton and its events are so fun to look into!
I'd love to see you react to songs from the musical 1776. It's about the events leading up to the decleration of independence and it has John Adams as main character.
Can confirm: Thomas Conway was the one shot through the mouth, by one (general) John Cadwalader. Source (via Wikipedia) "John Thaxter to Abigail Adams". Founders Online. National Archives. 6 July 1778.
Hamilton left after a fight with Washington about taking too much time to respond to Washington's summons. He was a little shit... he stayed away in direct sight with the camp with his wife, so Washington could see that little house across the river daily.. until he finally yielded and gave Hamilton the command.
This song is written in 7/8 time, a very difficult meter to maintain in a musical theatre context. LMM has said that he wrote it as a tribute to a song in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar, but he couldn't make it work past forty bars or so.
Has anyone considered that Hamilton’s relationship with Washington might be because Hamilton grew up without a father? His title song refers to him as a self-starter by the age of 14, so he feels the need to fend for himself and support himself without the help of an authoritative male figure in his life. That combined with his ambition might have led him to clash with someone like George Washington. This tends to be true with a lot of kids who grew up without a father; why do you think there’s so many street gangs?
That’s something that’s so great about the play Hamilton, every time you watch it you notice something new. I wonder if Hamilton was a little on the suicidal side, he’s wants to go into battle and (I swear, purposely) puts himself into compromising positions and duels. Something else that we’ll never know. Lol.
At first, I loved your videos and your bird.... now I love your shirt too. Also I completely agree on the doctor thing. He most have turned is back and noped out
The Hamilton videos are what hooked me to your you tube site. I am doing my grandson's social studies curriculum as part of his home schooling plan and really find your comments useful and enjoyable!!! Really glad to have this as a resource! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for carving out the time to make these with school back in session. Always enjoy them. Please do Washington On Your Side, All Cabinet battles and Election of 1800. Also, please do the deleted Hamilton songs.
I love how in this song Hamilton at some point goes "well I don't have your name" and you can _hear_ in Washington's voice the sheer disbelief... "wait, you're somehow fucking making this about YOURSELF?".
PLEASE do Yorktown next! I think you'd have a LOT to work with, historically, and it's the biggest song if the first act, AND, obviously, it the battle of Yorktown, and the end of the war lol
I wondered about the Famous Fighting Frenchman telling Washington, he needs Hamilton back to command an attack and to communicate with the French forces.
I know this comment is about 5 months late but.... when you're asking where the doctor went, I've had that same question and the plot hole has always bugged me. Now that I know that they wanted to shoot again... I'm thinking Lee's hyped and screaming, "Yeah, that tickled! Shoot me again bee-atch!" and the Doctor is like "Eff this sh*t, I'm out~". Plot hole solved.
I looked it up - Conway was shot in the mouth by John Cadwalader, because of Conway's Cabal. Conway resigned and left for France. Good catch - I always wondered why he mentioned Thomas Conway.
As to the doctor, I think the duel was more spontaneous, also, if there was concern Washington would find out about the duel and be mad, they might not have wanted to risk telling the doctor about the duel.
This guy is gonna be the reason why I pass my history course. And let me just say, the fact that he is wearing an Avatar the Last Airbender makes him better.
hello!!! i love ur videos (and ur shirt). i was hoping soon for a hamiltom video you could do the adams administration but instead of doing the version thats in the musical you could do the full version. in the full version hamilton just has a rap thats basically a diss track on adams
I read a biography on Alexander Hamilton (I'm pretty sure this one was made after the musical) and after reading the part on Hamilton leaving I was like 'Huh, that song was kinda way off the mark'. Same with Hamilton's affair (which I find it more sad that basically everyone expected it to happen sooner or later)
