Ever since I joined this channel long ago, I had been hoping for this series to be covered up. It is Extra Credits at its finest. Also if financial history interests you, the Paper Money series is also one of Extra Credits'' best.
To your comment in the beginning about Extra History not jumping into ww2 or other famous events. The story behind the Extra History channel is that it was started BECAUSE so many video games feature those events but there are so many more stories to tell. The whole goal was to not focus on the stuff you learn in school or is constantly touched on in media. And honestly I've learned more "obscure" history from them than anyone else.
Well, yes and no. Their very first Extra History was on the Second Punic War. It was done as a commission for the launch of Total War: Rome 2, and was meant to be a one-off thing. But it was so popular that one thing led to another, and the rest is history.
Yes! I've been hoping for a while that you would do the South Sea Bubble series. I find myself enjoying diving into the history of economics, ideas and political theory (as opposed to just the history of warfare) more and more as I get older. Looking forward to your reactions!
Honestly communities are built by engaged influencers. People on youtube tend to act like theres no good people online. But in reality, creators that actually put the effort in to manage their communities (especially early on) are usually rewarded.
This is one of my favorites because it shows the horror of greed run rampant. the film Wall Street and Gordon Gecko come from this type of idea of profit above all else.
Who knows who ot could be, it was Walpole. Long story short, walpole became the biggest meme in extra history and appears in cameos in different series. Just look for his design. @@DarkTider
Economics often get overlooked in terms of its impact on history. The economic downturn in the late 1850s played a big role in crippling the Buchanan administration and giving Republicans the US house majority in 1858 midterms and Lincoln the Presidency in 1860. The Panic of 1873 played a big role in the end of Reconstruction politically, since attention in the North turned to immediate economic concerns at the expense of preserving civil rights in the South. The Klondike Gold Rush increases the global supply of Gold and helps to end the 1890s Depression. This was the original "Great Depression" and is cited as the origination of the "Haunted House" in collective minds and in later films. This is because a lot of late Victorian mansions were built in the 1880s and early 1890s and were abandoned during this downturn. In England going back further, by the time of the Napoleonic Wars, people in England had a much higher per capita income than almost any place else in Europe. This is mentioned in the Historia Civilis: Congress of Vienna series. This is partially why England is able to keep shelling out vast sums and able to run up a debt 250% of GDP to fight the Seven Years War, the American Revolution, Revolutionary France and Napoleonic Wars.
I would love to see a reaction to the remaining episodes of The Napoleonic Wars by Epic History TV, including the Napoleon's Marshals series. Chris only watched the first half and left us hanging. Attempt #5
I think this channel’s community works so well because it is a reflection of your attitude and you’re behaviour when discussing history. Wether you are knowledgeable in an area or not, you’re always fascinated to know more about the history of our world. And that reflects on our community. It works the other way too, toxic RU-vidrs build an audience around them that is separated and toxic. This channel is like one big family that is always excited to learn knew things and expand on their viewpoints. :)
My favorite of Extra Credits’ series! I also really like their series on the beginnings of the London police force as well as the one on John Snow and the Broad Street pump.
Thanks for your engaging and awesome videos! I loved history in school and am about to start teaching this year. Hope to be able to use some of your videos as extra content for my students.
So excited to see you react to another Extra History video! I discovered their channel (and many more) thanks to you. I teach US Culture classes at a university in Japan and I have since included a LOT more history into the curriculum. It's so important to understand the basis of culture, ideas, philosophies, etc. Thank you for rekindling my love of history! I also love that I didn't have any idea where you personally stand politically until you flat out said it lol. That shows true objectivity and recognizing your own biases, which I have really taken to heart from you while teaching my own classes.
The bank of England really, really wants to paint the picture that it was the first true "national" bank (that is still in run today). Sadly, this goes to the Swedish National bank that started 3 decades earlier.
Omg yes! Thank you patreon supporters and Chris! Looking forward to Antietam. Just a question was your reaction on Bronze Age Collapse also by EH privated? I would also love to see you reaction on Justinian and Theodora. Looking forward to this series. It's a classic.
It's an important time in your life to focus on your own finances. You'll have the opportunity to support creators down the road when you're in a different stage of life. For now, just enjoy the content! As for the Bronze Age Collapse, I've never done a reaction to that. Justinian and Theodora will be coming at some point.
The South Sea Bubble is still one of my favourite topics that Extra History has covered and i knew NOTHING about it before i saw the Series by EC / EH. And, if i remember correctly, in the later episodes, i saw parallels with what we are doing today. Sometimes i have to look over contracts in the shipping industry and i see certain provisions / clauses that have their roots in what the South Sea Company did and it is amazing to make that connection. Basically humans have been assholes in the past by doing X, Y and Z, and therefore you need to have clauses that prevent them from doing X, Y and Z in the future, it really is fascinating!
Im so glad you're covering this, more people really need to see how far back the idea of companies and government manipulating the stock market really goes. I think for a lot of us it feels new, but its really not. The only thing that has changed is how elaborate its gotten.
Chris, thank you for tackling this subject. I’ve watched these episodes of extra history more times than I can count on my hands, it’ll be cool getting your perspective on things like this.
I really, really want to see your take on HC's Congress of Vienna as well, but EC is one of my favorite channels and this series is so bizarre it's amazing.
Fun fact- The Act of Union in 1707, which brought together the Crowns of England and Scotland under common law, was passed in the same year that Phillip V, first Bourbon king of Spain, starting writing to Nueva Planta Decrees, which brought the Crowns of Aragon and Castile under common law.
Hi! I hope this comment reaches you but I’ve been watching since this channel was at about 5-10k subscribers and what a ride it’s been! Your content is so different than so many other channels that I’ve watched! I’ve always been fascinated with learning new things and the way you explain and dive deeper into topics is just icing on the cake. Cheers and I hope you can keep growing this community for the future!
@9:10 Basically saying you have $5,000 in the checking account but your debts are about $15 million. And they give you a payment plan that takes you over 300 years to pay back.
This is THE serie of Extra History I just watch every 4th week of January like I start reading Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" every 2nd of Febuary (my OCD told me that this was the day the Soviet Generals where meeting to plan the attack on NATO) Confession: to beat my OCD I just start the audio book before going to sleep on the 2nd of Feb., stopping it after waking up the next morning, starting it again facing the next night and so on.
I do my best to behave in your comment section and try to address the topics I disagree with because you are so great, and this community is healthy. I apologize if I've ever rubbed anyone the wrong way, but I've had so many great sincere interactions here. Keep up the good work as always.
8:32 I was watching the proclamation of Charles III and noticed the ER on the throne and instantly had to dig back to this clip. A good bit of time was spent by Charles authorizing continued use of seals for the various agencies and territories until new ones can be designed and approved, which is relevant to this point. Amazing how a minor aside can be made much more relevant by events just a few weeks later.
Grew up in Baltimore so I camped in Antietam almost every year or so, along the C&O canal trail. It's an amazing story and 8'm excited for you to be there.
One thing of note is the fact that during this period of unfathomable debt, the British Empire is also in almost every corner of the world economically exploiting the populace. They were one of the wealthiest nations in the history of the world and not even that would satisfy their greed. I think there's a lesson there about human nature.
I always learn something new on your channel and it's given me more interest in history. Anytime I watch a historical drama, I take time out to read about it online and learn what's different from the movie vs the facts and get a lot of background of what I'm watching. I didn't do that before watching your reactions. I stumbled upon a really good video you might like. It's from a RU-vid channel called The Front and it's '5 Brief Moments of Humanity in the Second World War'. I think you've reacted to one of the stories already (from a different creator), so I was familiar with it, but had never heard of the other four stories. It was very interesting, sometimes heartwarming and sometimes tragic what they went through. It's a 10 minute video.
Total agreement with how nothing gets down because both sides oppose each other on principle of it being from the other side rather than any real moral grounds most times.
8:32 Queen Anne, "The Queen that's good and kind" This is from the early 18th century song "Over the Hills and Far Away" which dates to around 1706 I believe. It also makes a passing reference to the constant warfare EH mentioned right from the start with the line "Hark now the drum beats off again...".
When you finish the last episode there is a ending part that finishes the story of the character don't forget it's like the last last seconds of the video
When I was scrolling through my recommended. I saw the EH thumbnail and thought it was just their channel, then when I saw Chris I said to myself, “Self, that is a must watch after the latest GTCW episode.”
I think I remember hearing something about this a few years ago. I didn’t understand it at the time but I remember there was a news broadcast or show where they took out some of the original paperwork and talked about paying off a debt that was like 300 years old. It is so cool to see this and actually understand some of it now.
Man the list of terms in this video that just makes any adult today hurt inside to hear: - Debt crisis - Partisan institution - Insider trading History REALLY likes to rhyme, doesn't it?
Finally! Also please consider Drachinifel's channel in the future try Hampton roads, operation cerberus, battle of lissa or the Russian second Pacific squadron
On the topic promissory notes and later War Bond speculation, have you ever thought about doing a video on Smedley Butler? He talks about that exact thing in his book War is a Racket, I think he was in the Spanish American War, Boxer Rebellion and Banana wars. His criticisms of war were quite powerful and resonate with quite a lot of veterans today.
Wow, saw this series suggested in a comment of one of your videos probably a year ago or so. Didn't think it would ever see the light of day here :) Edit: It was in fact on the last video of the admiral yi series.
The South Sea Bubble (for those unfamiliar) basically is how far to get rich (or make someone else rich) and how far they are willing to cover it all up when it fails.
I don't know if you end up covering poll losers at some point anyways, but that "Congress of Vienna" video by Historia Civilis is superb and highly informative, also very relevant considering the events of the last 6 months and where the world appears it may be heading.
Oh you're in for a treat with this series, just remember, "It was Walpole". You know it's funny, when the cryptocurrency and NFT nonsense popped up the South Seas Bubble was the first thing that came to mind and history rhymed again.
0:10 I would looove for you to do Warhawk Seven Days Battles soon, your reactions to his Shiloh series are some of my favourites, simply because its you talking about the civil war at length which is my favourite thing to listen to
