Probably the cutest little book I have ever bought, "Galatea" explores the aftermath of the famous myth of Pygmalion.
In Pygmalion's mythology, the sculptor decides he's going to carve his ideal woman out of marble. Once she is complete he names her Galatea, and the sculptor cries realising this woman will never be real. In Ovid's version, the goddess Venus (greek counterpart: Aphrodite) takes pity on him and turns Galatea into a living, breathing woman. In theory, they live happily ever after.
Miller's continuation of this myth suggests anything but a happily every after for this non-conventional couple. Playing on the themes woven into the original myth, Miller highlights the misogyny attached to Pygmalion - a man who only sees the value of a woman he created, one who does not exist outside of himself, and one who lives up to his standards of what a woman should be. Galatea, to Pygmalion, is perfect, obedient, quiet, and without a single blemish both physically and morally.
All in all, it was a really compelling read. Quite dark I must admit, but interesting nonetheless. I thought Miller did a great job in paying homage to the original myth, while also guiding the tale into darker waters (and yes, that is a reference you will only understand if you've read Galatea). However, there's no way of critiquing this on an educational spectrum, given that the short story isn't necessarily a retelling. Therefore I would advise people who want to read this story to also read the original myth in order to fully appreciate what Miller has used as a springboard for her own narrative.

I'll be honest.. I was searching for a movie review of "Madelines" (2022). Your thumbnail caught my attention, and I clicked it without knowing what you were on about. Good summary and attitude, so I stayed to listen. Can't say what worked.. but there you go. Keep it up I guess!

You know, it's rather funny how romantic or passionated I've had considered this myth so far. I, almost immediately, link it to Jean-León Gerome's painting and to Ovid. Also, as a guy, I felt as if I could understand Pygmalion. However, as it has been constantly mentioned, all stories have two (or more) sides. It's fascinating how female writers have been re-writing the classics as part of their literary projects. Thanks for the review! I throroughly enjoyed Miller's The Song of Achilles ( I wrote about it in my undergraduate thesis) and I can't wait to know Galatea's telling of her own story.

Have you read Ovid's version in the Latin? I have, and after reading it I don't know how you could understand Pygmalion or find it romantic, lol. Even my guy friends found it disgusting. Ovid might have found Pygmalion disgusting himself.

@@arianygaard6578 No, no. That's what I meant. After some consideration, now I think it's kinda weird (to say the least). About Ovid's version, I haven't read it yet. Thank you for the recommendation.

@@tiagomelo5761 Nah dw abt it. I get what you mean, I think modern translations make it seem a lot more romantic than in Ovid (where Pygmalion gropes Galatea, hates women in general etc) I love "Metamorphoses" though, glad you going to read it

Oooh I've always been fascinated by this myth. It's been a long time since I read it but I don't remember Galatea having much of a voice. I'm interested to hear her side of things!

It is Galateea. I am trying to do it phonetically. It’s the second one you said. Γαλάτεια . ει in Greek is a long e sound.

I bet with my bottom dollar that if it had been a woman who carved a statue of a man she would be celebrated as a feminist icon but because it's a man he is labeled problematic and creepy,can you see the double standard here?
@MoAnInc
@MoAnInc Год назад
… no it would still be weird if a woman carved her ideal man out of stone and fell in love with a literal statue because she deemed not a single man to be up to par with her expectations. That’s weird regardless of gender - I just simply spoke about it within the confines of the parameters laid down on the page rather than speaking more generally. But it would be weird for anyone to do this imo.

@@MoAnInc i fail to see how the persuit of happyness is wierd,it wasnt that long ago that crossdressing was considerd "weird" and nowadays its practically a protected class of people.we have a rapid rise in A.I. technolagy and we are seeing the first synthetic "companions" being mass produced,is this too "weird"? or mearly humans adapting to there envirenment?
