The Rauland intercom speaker/system dates back to 1956. I researched this after getting the name and model # off a vintage radio/speaker website. Very cool! The telephone looks mid 80's. I love your random videos Dan. These places are just time capsules lost in time. Great footage! Kinda haunting that you wanna hear how the school was when it was in use and full of students and employees.
Fun fact: The teacher listed on the intercom as L Mears was the Civics teacher. If ever a day went by where you didn't feel like listening to his Civics lesson, all you'd have to do is ask a question about the Civil War and he'd start talking about that for the whole class period.
Central High School was built in 1932 and then an addition was added in 1935. The school was in service until 1984. Central High School was added to the National Register Of Historic Places of VA in 2011 where it was also designated as a landmark of VA.
+Agent Fungus Im from England and my high school used to be a hospital in the 18th century. They haven't changed the exterior so its still a old (and kind of creepy) looking place.
No the school was open much later than that (I went to this school). It was changed from a high school to a middle school in 1984. It was closed down in 2005. It wasn't in the best condition in the end of it's run though.
CHS Class of 1984! Go Bulldogs!!! Converted to a middle school the year after I graduated and stayed open for another 20 years. And you're right- there are people out here with good memories of Central!
Now this school is something out of Silent Hill with the paint peeling off and the keys, half way expect to hear the sirens going off and the walls shredding apart.
Glad you went to the ESVA to film this! Really awesome, thank you. I was born and raised here. This school shut down for good right as I was going into high school.
Fun fact: The principal of this school when I was there was a large lady who ate fried chicken every single day for lunch, despite her several heart attacks. It blew our minds as kids to watch her do it.
These are so interesting to see the structure still holding. There's an abandoned school in Richfield, Ohio - Richfield Elementary School! You should check it out dan
Love this video! Reminds me of the gradeschool where i went in Oregon, which was also my 93 year old grandmas highschool. Next year my son will attend and be the 4th generation to go there!
So much cool vintage stuff that was left there. I'm so happy that no one has touched it and I hope no one will and if they do it goes into the right hands who can appreciate the technology of that timeframe of life on this Earth.
Noticed in this video that you passed by at least one fire extinguisher. Do you ever think to check for an inspection tag? It might have a date which would tell (approximately) when the building was last occupied. Something to think about in future roamings.
OMG, so much cool stuff here! Hopefully they will maintain this place somewhat. The building itself looks pretty solid still. My school had those same AT&T phones, and the PA system looks nearly identical to one I had years ago. Mine was made by Bryce Sound and Engineering though. It always amazes me how many layers of paint are on these old buildings. I tend to look for the original colors whenever I see a video like this, because I try to picture how it looked when new.
Cops use it as a nest. They perch there and watch for speeders. Locals know that going there to fool around is running the risk of getting busted. These dudes were lucky they weren't there at the wrong time.
4exgold That would be pretty cool actually. I don't like it when graffiti artists just tag their name. Nobody cares, paint the Mona Lisa then I'll be impressed.
I'd love to see inside my old Middle school, its was abandoned at least 20 years ago. Its very old and is big like this school. A really rich lady bought it and uses it for storage, I wish shed let me take a look inside. I lived right beside it as a kid and would walk up are hill to get to it . My mother still lives in are old home so I see it all the time. My grandfather was a teacher there when my mom was a kid. I'd just love to walk through it one more time.
At 4:28 Will looks like a caretaker when he went up the stairs with his coloured keys on his trousers. I really love your videos Dan Bell! Best greetings to you and Will from Germany!
A guy from our area here a while back purchased a old school. It was very small but it housed all grades from kindergarten to high school. But way back when the classes were a lot smaller than they are now. Granted not everyone grew jointed cuz some of them had to go to the farm and start working or stay home and help Mom take care of the little ones. But my point being he bought this amazing building gorgeous it was in need of a lot of repair a lot of TLC. But he's in the process of turning it into Apartments. I think one of the best things anyone could do. Just like all those abandoned malls and shopping centers turn them into Apartments. They're not going to waste. By the way that's stage area looked exactly like the one and the school in the school hear that the man purchased. Maybe that was how they were all built back then they all look the same Maybe
+Darwin Burns There are no vandals because there are no people. All the traffic you see are people just passing through to get somewhere else lol. The peninsula is almost completely abandoned except for a few towns.
Really late to the comment party...but I've actually been to this place! At least outside of it. We were on a bike trip from the southern tip of the Eastern Shore up to Chicoteague and back, and we stopped here for a break at some point. This would have been like 1995 or 1996 though. I remember it from the fallout shelter sign, amazing it is all still there.
We did in the 90's...jeesh, where did u go to school??, not to mention, When was the last time u were IN one, I havnt been in a school that wasnt like that. Maybe the more modern day built ones are different?,
Fun fact: A sexual assault happened in that bathroom. A few black kids raped a gay white kid to teach him it's not ok to be gay. It's like they didn't even realize the irony that doing that made them just as gay as him.
Wow, it's in really decent condition for its age; reminds me of the high school I went to, has a lot of the same things. This school could possibly be renovated and used again. But, there's probably not that many kids around to attend it, or use it as a hospital; or something along those lines.
I use to go to this school shorty after moving up this school was closed down...its wow to see much haven't changed lol....Mr Mears AKA Deerfoot (history teacher)once told our class that he was sooo fast that he had shot his gun chased down the bullet and placed the deer in front of the shot 😃 ....the Bulldogs memories
The curtains on the stage in the theatre are in better condition than the curtains that were in my elementary school when I attended it, which they are still using today, 20 years later.
The school itself served as a fallout shelter. Meaning it was a large brick building. During the cold war they taught kids that ducking and covering would save them from a nuclear blast. There isn't a bunker here, just the school.
demented12 My high school had a designated fallout area, complete with radio equipment, a generator and civil defense gear. After the fall of the soviet union, it was converted into a science lab and the items put on display, but the generator controls and the blast doors remained. We used to get new kids to try and open that door themselves and watch them struggle.
Man that is a very small school. i was surprised it did not have lockers. i bet it became part of a bigger school and thats why it was closed down. amazing find. it was not vandalized much at all.
It did have lockers. When I went there, over half of the lockers weren't worth a damn. All you had to do was lift up the handle and jiggle the door and the lockers would open, no combination needed. I never once memorized a combination at that school.
Hi Will!!! :D Hey - I remember those shelter signs in basements of certain apartment buildings and in my school - I live in NY. WE used to line up in the halls in grade school then we'd all sit in rows against the hallway walls - I guess away from the windows in our classroom. That was our drill we did...sat in the hall & waited to blow up, but at least we'd not be hit by shards from the classroom windows?!! hehe
In 2005, the school closed. In 2008, Tucker Robbins, a furniture designer from New York City, purchased the entire property for $150,000 with a vision to rehabilitate the school into a new home for his NYC based furniture manufacturing business, as well as an environmental-educational facility. Read about Tucker Robbins’ plan on his website. Unfortunately, his vision was not realized; and in 2015, he offered up the school for sale for $525,000. (Source: DelMarVANOW and Eastern Shore Post.) Fortunately, while he owned the building, Robbins did hire a consultant to nominate the school to the National Register of Historic Places (listed 2010). Currently the property is listed for $350,000. Bonus: the asbestos abatement is completed inside the school building. Check the real estate for interior photographs.
great building! it's wonderful to see that they obviously do love this old building, evident by the lack of human destruction ....graffitti, busted urinals...etc. i really love it. its a lot like my jr. high in albuquerque nm . same auditorium seats and water fountains, windows...its amazing, and still in use. jefferson mid school. i think it was built in the early 20'a. anyways, thanks for the memories! good vid....
Great video, schools should never be abandoned buildings, scariest part of the building.........the office, always going to the office is scary jejeje. Love "office" sign it looks so old.
I've passed it a few times. Driving through the peninsula is so depressing - nothing but abandoned buildings and emptiness for miles and miles, and just a few towns every now and then. The only reason there is any traffic is because people use it as a shortcut and cross the Chesapeake to get somewhere else lol
Bet if you just closed your eyes & stood there, you could hear the echoes of all yesteryears kids in those halls & classrooms. The in between classes hub bub in the hallways. The assemblies & P.T. classes in the gym. Teachers trying to quiet the chaos of kids returning to class from recess. Like Dan said, "Lots if good memories"...
It was actually a middle school when it closed in 2005 because they built a new middle school it closed due to being unsafe it has asbestos in the walls and celling
Fun fact: The room with the sink in it wasn't the Home Ec. room when I was there. Home Ec. was taught in one of the out buildings behind the school, near the football field.
It looks bigger on the outside then in the inside. I graduated from a Virginia high school 20 years ago and visited my high school in 2014 for it's 50th anniversary. The school was renovated several years ago. It is bigger than this one.
dammn dan! uploading videos from left to right! love it! Every time you upload a video I know that you are still alive! lol love your channel! come to Sioux City IowA we have many tunnels!
Headphones are recommended if you're listening to the EVPs (ghosts' audibly captured in the video's audio) "I'm Belle Marellie!!" at 1:15. Another faint voice is captured at 1:17. I believe she's saying "Addie Arpo." It sounds like the spirits of two young girls introducing themselves. Dan picks up the phone in the office and says that there's no dial tone, and a male voice says "Dial tone" at 4:08-4:09. It's real clear. You don't need headphones even to hear it. Someone is saying something very faintly at 4:33 as they're climbing the stairs. It's like someone is shouting far away. Maybe that's all it is and the mic is picking it up. I wonder why there are spirits in an old abandoned school? Well it's not as haunted as the School of the Undead, but it'll do. Thanx for the tour.
My old highschool was biult in 1934, it has been fixed up but still looks very old fashioned. Just becuase it has old windows and stuff, doesnt mean it was actually abandoned in that era. In another video of an urban explorer i saw very modern looking coke vending machines on one of the floors that looked from 1997/2000, strange, i thought it was very odd here was this place with peeling and decaying, and it has brand new looking vending machines in it🤔 Maybe they are storing them? lol, Hope u check that out more. The other urban exploror just passed them like it was nothing😡, and btw, in highschool we had alot of these old wooden seats, even in elementary in 2000.
Will Krupinsky has talent ! that shouldn't surprise you a descendant from the same family tree as Michael Stivic & Jeff Spicoli & -Kevin Bacon- actor Kevin Bacon's lawn man, comes from a long line of ... well other humans.
This school has not been abandoned all that long -- it was still a middle school about 15 years ago and then they attempted to make into a "community center", which sadly didn't last long. So I'd say maybe 8-10 years abandoned? The lack of graffiti is definitely due to it being a favorite speed trap area of the local police -- they sit there quite often with radar guns.
+A. Heady The peeling paint and general decay inside the building seems to appear like it was abandoned 30 years ago. If it was last used 11 years ago (as another commenter mentioned), the last occupants left behind no evidence of anything that was a hint to 2005, like an abandoned computer or a calendar posting left on a bulletin board or wall.
This is Dan Bell I really appreciate and love your channel. But there is one thing that happens in your videos that bugs the crap out of me lol. There's been a few videos where I really get into them and It's seems like right in the middle of the show, suddenly it's all done and the videos over. Alot of your videos you usually say when the exploration is done and you're leaving, but like I said, some It's seems like the video gets cut and I'm stuck wondering what happened lol !! It's doesn't happen with all your videos, only some. Is it something to do with editing? Still though, I really enjoy your channel and love all the videos. Great job.
