When I was in the Army in 1969, stationed at Fort Huachuca, three of my buddies and I visited the Grand Canyon. We walked up to the edge at Duck on a Rock Viewpoint and were quiet for about five minutes. One of my friends, a soldier from Philadelphia, said quietly "God, what a hole". And we had to agree. It was, and still is, the most magnificent hole we had ever seen. I have since been in all fifty states and a half dozen or so foreign countries, and there is no comparison.

Love your videos! Greetings from Sweden. Me and a friend visited "Lipan Point" when we went through Grand Canyon West Village. Truly miss this place and hope to be back one day... We spent the night at the canyon and it was the most magical time of my life. 10 years ago this year. America is beautiful!

There is a traditional Navajo weaver inside the Cameron Trading Post. You should go visit her the next time you go by the trading post. She has her own little area toward the southwest corner of the trading post. Her work is amazing.

There's Another Desert Tower on Hwy 8 overlooking El Centro in San Diego County that's a spitting Image of the one pictured here. Also built in the 30's by Road crew's going through some Extremely rugged terrain. Exact Copies, Twin Sisters that had to have Some connection. We were just there in the middle of October. We had piles of snow at our campsite! We even had a visit from some elk. It’s a fantastic place! I got dizzy when I walked up to the railing and looked down so I didn’t want to get close to those spots without the railing. We sat at those benches and listened to a tour guide give a very interesting history on how the canyon was formed. It took me 67 years to get there and I hope I can make it back someday.

I really appreciate this video. In October we were on our way to the Grand Canyon taking exactly the route in this video. We were in our brand new travel trailer and really looking forward to seeing the canyon. I'm 68 and have never seen it. However, on Highway 64 several miles outside of Cameron our car broke down at sunset on our way to Desert View campground. I almost saw the exact spot we broke down in this video. We had to be towed back to Flagstaff (that was quite an adventure!). We never made it to the canyon. We want to come back, hopefully in the next couple years, and see several areas of Arizona, including the canyon. It was nice to see what we would have seen in this video had we made it all the way.

Don't know if you read the signboard for the air crash. I feel it's something that deserves mentioning. At ten:thirty on the morning of June 30, 1956, two airliners (a United DC-7 from L.A. to Chicago Midway with 58 passengers and crew, and a Trans World Constellation from L.A. to Kansas City with 70 on board) collided at a point nine miles north of the Desert View Tower. Both aircraft were fatally damaged and crashed into the canyon, killing all aboard both planes. There was virtually no air traffic control system in place at the time. The public outcry of this crash was the primary impetus that led to the creation of the F.A.A. and today's air traffic control system. Tragic, tragic event.

You are so lucky, its the 5th November, sunshine, shirt sleeves, shorts. Here in the UK, its 13 degrees, grey and windy. No rain today though. Grateful for small mercies eh? I've hiked and camped down this awesome Canyon many times from both rims. The North Rim is greener, more heavily forested and approx one thousand feet higher and much quieter. Love this place.

As I've already mentioned in previous Russ videos. I was doing a self-drive tour of the South West in 1993. I visited the tower and climbed up inside it and looking out one of the windows I remember looking directly north in the direction I was planning to continue with my tour. (Heading into Utah). Looking at the distant desert landscape, I remember having a mild panic attack because the desert visa looked so remote and threatening. Probably had a lot to do with being alone and finding myself around. Once I got back on the road and headed towards Cameron, I got over the apprehension.

We were there in 2018 and I was able to go up the tower. Pictures just don't due it justice as seeing it right there. What an amazing sight. Now that we have moved to AZ we'll be going back. It would appear that you picked a good time to go as the number of people are no where near what it was in 2018. We were there in May at the start/hight of tourist season. Fall looks to be a better time to go up.

Visited that location in the late around 2005. Don't remember about the TWA crash. Did a little search and discovered that it was a mid air collision between two commercial aircraft. Copied from Wikipedia,. The Grand Canyon mid-air collision occurred in the western United States on Saturday, June 30, 1956, when a United Airlines Douglas DC-7 struck a Trans World Airlines Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation over Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. All 128 on board both flights perished, making it the first commercial airline incident to exceed one hundred fatalities. The flights had departed Los Angeles International Airport minutes apart for Chicago and Kansas City, respectively.

We were fortunate enough to be these later in the afternoon as the sun was going down. You can see all the way over into the Painted Desert from the top floor.
