California's picturesque foothills fed by the clear crystal snow runoff from the Sierra, home to the many diverse Native American cultures was forever changed when James Marshall discovered Gold in California at Sutter's Mill in 1848 and set off the largest gold rush in history. Reminders of this abundantly rich history can be found everywhere along Hwy 49 as it winds and meanders through the Mother Lode mining towns of days gone by, through flowering white dogwoods, olive colored oaks and towering cedar, the remnants of history; old stone cabins and buildings, mining equipment, and stamp mills that were used to crush gold-bearing quartz.
This historic area needs to be preserved and shared to save the heritage and rugged beauty of Hwy 49 and Gold Country, one of California's most precious resources, for everyone, everywhere.
Today along this incredible American byway is a region of quaint bed and breakfasts, shops lining historic main streets, award winning wineries, fine restaurants, antique and gift shops, art galleries, golf courses, unlimited recreation and the chance to travel back in time...
A 9.5 minute video covering Gold Rush history in the first half and Gold Country today in the second half.

I love this video. This part of California is my homeland, I am 6th generation from El Dorado County, where the gold rush began. I've been stuck living in Texas for the past 3 years. Trying like mad to get the right opportunity to move back home. People who've never been to the gold country don't know what they're missing. If I could give this video 100 thumbs up and 1000 hearts I would.

I still have family and grew up in this area. I now live in Idaho. Nothing compares to northern California.

Excellent! (4th generation San Franciscan) But also Scottish and have kin in Grass Valley who participate in the Cornish Christmas there (Nevada City perhaps?). And my dad played harmonica when we went camping. I love this presentation truly. Nicely done and evocative for sure. You covered the bases! END 49. Some day.....

Thank you Norma... it is an amazing area with colorful history. Everyone should make the entire drive taking time to stop at all the museums. Cornish Christmas is one of my favorites.

The influx to the area really did reshape the state, and even the country.

Would have been much better if you had named all the towns. The gold country has been my home for 76 years. It is so much bigger than anyone can imagine. There are so many towns now ghost towns but still there. I really hate what our population has done to California. Ruined a great state. And it is spreading!💔
