Oklahoma City girl here. Thank you for covering this. This historical icestorm (total 5 inches of freezing rain) has not gotten much media attention. At the peak we had 388,000 customers without power in the Oklahoma City and surrounding areas. We still had 300,000 at noon today without power. Oklahoma City Metro area has lost so many trees to this historic weather event due to it being the earliest ice storm on record, hitting us while our trees still had all their green leaves. The ice had so much folliage to attach to that it pulled the limbs and branches to the ground, ripping them from the trees, even splitting the trees apart and/or pulling the trees up by the roots. And then there is all the damage to shrubs and plants from the ice and falling limbs, not to mention the damage to homes, patios, outdoor living rooms, fences, and vehicles. It will take months for the clean up and years to recover from our loss of arbor.
We had a bad ice storm in northern NY back in 1998 that started January 8th and lasted for a couple days. Then after the freezing rain got done, it snowed for a day or two. We did not get power back until 3 weeks later to the day.
Sorry for your predicament . The three weeks of ice storm in january of 2002 ir 2003 amazed me when Tulsa and Fort Smith streets had ice up to the curbs for three weeks! There is no protection for trees from ice storms other than running patio fire pit underneath, Sadly , my city does not beleive a restrictiin on where trees can be planted eventualky ends badly with power out in 10degree weather. Where we plant trees matters. Look up, please!
I live just North of OKC and luckily I only lost power for one day. The roads never really got to bad at all because it didn’t get cold enough and it didn’t stay cold for very long, just long enough to ruin a bunch of beautiful trees and knock a bunch of people’s power out. Last week we have an ice storm and this week it’s 70 degrees, sunny and no wind. Crazy OK weather.
Anyone Down In Guthrie , Logan County ? My Sister has been calling Cathy for Days and just gets Voice Mail . Cathy is in her 70s and lives alone with Her Dogs out in the Sticks . She called down to another Woman who knows Cathy who lived in the Area to check on Her . Cathy was found dead in her Home by the Police who showed up . My Sister is driving down there and is Upset that nobody missed seeing her out and about ? I am looking for Videos to understand how last weeks Ice Storm was .
Brutal. 1998 (?) ice storm put parts of the northeastern NY and south eastern Canada out of commission for 3-7 weeks. Such winter weather is challenging at least ! Namaste all!
When I walked out of my home in Ponca city I was like this isn't Oklahoman weather wtf happened to my tree But then I realized it is Oklahoman weather, one day cold next hot asf and then ice storms so I just went back to bed
Yall are funny..we been experiencing that kind of weather forever..hot one day cold the next..surprise ice storms..well not really a surprise we knew this was coming last week
I've noticed some pretty nasty comments, borderline abusive. I'm leaving the global warming debate alone. Look, these types of storms happen because of warmer weather in late fall, winter and early spring. Example : This storm was the result of it being so warm lately. The sudden cold front moved in fast. Hot air rises. The upper atmosphere where the clouds are, produced snow. The snow then fell through the warm air, melted then the precipitation hit the freezing cold air at the lowest atmosphere then froze. It accumulated as ice on any surface it touched. These ice storms cannot happen unless they were preceded by a warm spell.
