The Historic Towns Initiative was a partnership between Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter, The Ramelton Georgian Society, Ballyshannon Regeneration Group, Dedalus Architecture, local property owners, The Heritage Council and the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage.
Within Donegal County Council, it was a joint initiative between the Housing, Corporate & Culture Directorate and the Community Development & Planning Directorate and co-managed by the Heritage Officer and Conservation Officer. These projects were carried out from 2019 and 2022. Conservation works were supervised by Duncan McLaren of Dedalus Architecture, a Grade I conservation architect. 7 buildings in Letterkenny, 14 buildings in Ramelton and 19 historic buildings in Ballyshannon benefitted under the Historic Towns Initiative.
Most of the buildings are Protected Structures or included on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage and contribute to these town’s historic streetscapes. The conservation works undertaken included roof and chimney repairs, addressing structural issues, installation of cast-iron rainwater goods, reinstatement of timber sash windows and doors, and the repair and reinstatement of historic shopfronts using traditional materials and informed by best conservation practice and historical evidence.
This video was funded by The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
