Some examples of volumetric images from historic stereoscopic photographs using an AI/Unity workflow.
For more information about how these volumetric images were created, take a look at my previous video: • Multiplane Video - Vol...
The images seen are:
• San Francisco, soldiers departing for the Philippines. Spanish American War (1898)
• Lily pond in garden, Pan-American Exposition. Buffalo, New York (1901)
• Dancing Girls on Camels through street in "Mysterious Asia". The World's Fair. St. Louis, Missouri (1904)
• Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building. Jamestown Ter-centennial Exposition, Virginia (1907)
• Sorting Leaf Tobacco. Connecticut. Date unknown
• Pres. and Mrs. Harding with children of P.L. Harden. Alaska, 1923
• Wrigley, owner of the Cubs and Wrigley Field in Chicago. Mr. Wrigley is Pres. of Wrigley Gum Co. (Oct. 14, 1929)
• Avenue of Flags, looking N. from Hall of Science. A Century of Progress. Chicago World's Fair (1933)
• North on Avenue of Flags. A Century of Progress. Chicago World's Fair (1933)

Time machine! So how do they feel in VR? Does it feel like a few very discrete planes of depth or like natural vision parallax? Will you be releasing any for viewing in VR?

I haven't looked at these specific images in VR yet tbh, but in general the technique tends towards fairly realistic parallax, and does fairly well with reflective surfaces and volumetric effects like fog and smoke. It does not capture more advanced view dependent effects like refractions. It also struggles (like all stereo matching techniques) with areas of flat color that lack detail, repeating patterns such as vertical lines, and horizontal lines that lack detail.

@@JoshGladstone Would love to see any examples if you end up making them for VR.
