I stayed in a dorm room at the university back in the summer of 2003 while traveling throughout the UK. It was quite an experience to walk on a drawbridge to get to the dorm! When I arrived in the evening the cathedral was closed, but someone was rehearsing for an organ recital, and I could vaguely hear this spooky organ music from outside in the cemetery. To top off the eerie effect, a small bird of prey hovered over one of the towers as the sky darkened at dusk. SPOOKY!!!!
Stunning. I have seen St Pauls and Westminister Abbey but Durham Cathedral is something else. Lets not forget the north of England was the centre of England for many of hundered of years.
@ADZ01982 I didn't know that about northern England being the center of power for so long, but it makes sense when you consider the Norman conquest of 1066. I think this cathedral is stunning because it's massive size and powerful presence. As an American I am fascinated by these very old structures that have stood the test the time to inspire us all today.
Absolutely, world's best building for me. I think the rule on photos /videos is because first and foremost it is a church where people pray and may feel uncomfortable doing so if someone is using a camera. On a positive note, perhaps your vid will encourage more people to visit and make donations to the cathedral's upkeep.
This must be pretty old! I spotted two of my friends from Uni coming out the castle gate, so it must have been recorded 1992-1995. You could record / photograph in the cathedral then, for the princely sum of £1
Hi kpbarrow, I believe it was just after Christmas 1992, as we bought ourselves the video camera for Christmas, and I filmed it without any question or comment about what I was doing. It really is a top historic presence, and only it and Hadrian's Wall are World Heritage sites in the north east of England. Take that Newcastle!!
