How often should you wash your hair? Capitalism says daily shampoo, but hair history says no! Let's bust some historical hair myths, with help from my new Marlow pillows! Get 25% off 2 Marlow pillows or 40% off 4 pillows with my link here: bit.ly/SnappyDragon_Marlow This video is kindly sponsored by Marlow.
History is full of hair myths, and as a former hairstylist, I love using my old professional skills for busting hair myths in the name of fashion history. Historical hair care involved a lot less washing than today : Medieval hair care relied much more on brushing and braiding, because medieval hair washing soap could be nasty stuff! So how did we get from middle ages haircare to washing hair daily with shampoo? Spoiler alert : It's marketing.
Historical hair techniques evolved quite a bit over the last couple centuries, and so has shampoo history! The word shampoo wasn't part of the English language until 1814. But it wasn't a special product, it was still just soap! The stuff we know as shampoo wasn't invented until the 1930s, when washing weekly was a relatively new practice. Washing hair daily didn't become idealized until the 1960s and 70s, when a growing variety in fashionable hairstyles meant there was no "right" answer to how often you should wash your hair. So, product companies began advertising shampoo you could use every day, and coming up with ways to make you feel like your hair was dirty if you didn't.
Does washing hair daily damage it? With shampoo from the 1970s, probably, although there's no one right answer that works for everyone's hair type. Hair myths and facts are everwhere, including in history, and as a trained hairdresser, I think it's much more important to figure out what works just for you. Maybe that's washing hair daily, maybe that's a middle ages no shampoo routine, or anywhere in between! But don't disregard the lengths advertising will go to if it can sell you more of something, as the historical myths and facts show.

Oh my God, I have been fighting my family’s hair misinformation forever. My whole life I was told the blowouts were the only way to have clean looking hair. I didn’t even realize I have wavy hair until I was 28. Growing up I was taught that my naturally “messy looking” hair was “unprofessional” and “not nice looking” (by family alone, not in public). Although I’m a white woman, i’ll bet anything that notion is rooted in racism (my family has DEEP Southern roots, and I have Black family members who have fried their beautiful curls trying to straighten their hair). I love my hair now, even though it still doesn’t do what I tell it to do. And I have no idea where my hair dryer is.

It wouldn't surprise me! A lot of what I've read about the development of Eurocentric beauty standards tracks with that.

It is definitely related to anti-Black racism and also antisemitism. Jewish people are more likely to have curly hair than most other ethnicities, and way more than most people considered white by 20th/21st century American standards. There are fashion advice books and articles in the early twentieth century that explicitly advise women to straighten their hair or only wear it in "neat" (read: artificial) curls, not "messy rat's nests" (read: natural curls/coils) to avoid looking too "ethnic" or "unassimilated". Even at least one Yiddish publication gave this advice to women experiencing difficulty finding jobs due to antisemitism. Several Black-run newspapers also advised women to straighten their hair, not to (usually) pass as white, but some gave the explicit reasoning that white people are more comfortable with Black people if they look more "white".

@@ellenwistrom1225 This notion does not exist in Germany either. If anything, there is a very very very slight favor for curly hair because it looks more voluminous, which is seen as a good thing (but then, my hair is mostly straight, so I am a bit envious). The idea may be eurocentric, but I am not sure it still widely exists in Europe. If anything, black people's hair is looked at either neutrally or with envy.

Mayby it's not racism? It may be, but I am from the Central Europe and have naturally thick, "puffy" hair - and guess what, everybody (not my closest family, but further, i.e. "dear" aunties yes) always tried to tame them deciding that slick is the way. The thing is, to have a slick, "tamed" hair you have to use (and buy) the most products, "as seen on tv" etc🤷🏼‍♀️... So we are teached what is looking "good" but not neccessarilly for obvious reasons. Also, for most people slick & tamed = proper & polite, we can't have wild ones and different in our classroom/workplace, right?!

One advertisement based myth I dislike is “oily hair is the devil.” My hair is much easier to manage when is has adequate greasing, like with the LOC method. I only discovered the joy of hair oil when I was about 13, after about 11 years of daily screaming. My mom, with short baby fine blond hair, insisted she was the parent who knew how to manage mixed Black hair. She was also adamant I was lying about the pain of her ripping tangles out of my head. When I started my own hair care, which included oil, no pain and few tangles. Another notable instance is when my now ex offered to brush my hair. Three strokes in, he complains my hair is oily. When I said that was on purpose, he tried another tactic and straight up insulted my hair. I was having none of it.

@@alton791 a. Kinky hair has a rougher texture, which leads to moisture leaving the hair quicker (I think because the horn layers are more open) b. This just made me remember a nightmare hair dressing experience I had a few years ago. To set the story, I need to wash my hair about twice a week because it gets really oily. The week prior to going to my hair dressing appointment, I got severe burns on my hands, fingers and leg from spilling boiling sugar on them, both hands because I automatically grabbed the hand I had poured the boiling sugar on, otherwise it would have just been one hand. So I rock up to my hair dressing appointment with my fingers individually wrapped in bandages and unable to use them, and disgusting hair from not being able to wash if for a week. The burn on my leg was so severe, it took just under 4 months to heal, even though it was the size of a large coin. But I hated how my hair looked and felt and I was really looking forwards to the hair dressing appointment so that I could have my hair washed and feel nice again, but the hairdresser (one I didn't normally see) was such a bitch about it. No "oh my god, are you okay, your hands are covered in bandages" and "oh my gosh, that sounds so painful, no worries about not being able to wash your hair, I got you." No, instead she just looked at me like I was snot and proceeded to wash my hair, ignoring my apologies for having gross hair and explaining I couldn't wash it since my hands were covered in burns and I live alone. Just very loud silence. When came the hair cutting portion, I was in pain, I had had a week of pain, I was stressed because she kept getting close to the burn on my leg, I was embarrassed about my hair and then when she started using her hair thinning sheers, she pulled my hair painfully and I started to cry. I was sitting in hair hair dressers chair, silently weeping and I know she noticed because we met eyes, and she just completely ignored it. I paid over $100 for that wash and hair cut. Never returned to that salon, and I wish I had actually complained about her because she was awful. I don't care how bad her day might have been, it wasn't cool for her to treat me like that.

This video hit the nail right on the head for me and my feelings about hair washing. My “least favorite “ advertisement” related to hair was the over abundance of super straight hair ads in the early 2000s. Thankfully, my family and some friends often complimented and appreciated my curly hair, even though some of them would often ask me if I’d ever straightened it, which always bugged me. When I entered my professional career, I looked online for professional hairstyles. I found none aimed at curly hair, and saw the culture say that “smooth and sleek” was professional, while “frizzy and poofy” was undesirable. For the first couple years, I never wore my hair down, even though my peers with straight hair often did. It took time and learning more about curly hair for me to finally realize that I’d been taught wrong. I can’t watch the Princess Diaries makeover scene without rolling my eyes now. So damaging to anyone with curls or any texture other than straight.

The same myth is pretty pervasive with body care as well, and it completely backfires. I had a room mate for years who was unhappy that I didn't use enough soap, and therefore must have been filthy. I therefore had to scrub every inch of my body every single day with liberal amounts of soap so she wouldn't tell me I was dirty and unprofessional. When I did that I also had to lotion up most of my body, in my 20s, because I was always visibly dry on my legs and sometimes arms if I didn't. But here's the thing that really gets me. Eventually it started to seem like the more I cleaned myself, the quicker I started smelling bad once I started working, and not my arm pits, which had deodorant, like my lower back which gets damp quickly, or my whole waist area if the house I was cleaning was hot and I got fairly sweaty. I finally figured out that all that soap completely disrupted my natural skin microbiome, so it now favors only the things that cause odor once they get a little moisture. I've since gone back to my previous habit of soaping only the pits, privates, and feet when I've been barefoot and wiping down with a rag soaked in rice water instead of soaping up. I've noticed a decrease in body odor in a few days. I probably don't smell quite as "fresh" straight out of the shower now, but I'd rather just rinse myself off well and not really stink at 10:00 AM.

Agree with you on this… I stopped using body wash over 2 years ago due to contact dermatitis and switched to diluted Castile soap. However, I have eczema on my shins and they can get super dry. I switched to using only my natural loofah all over the body, and using soap only on areas as-needed. I never soap my arms or legs, and I no longer struggle with dry skin and needing to use lotion. That reminds me of a horrible WWII era ad for laundry soap in an Australian women's magazine. It featured a pretty but unfortunately smelly girl called Winnie, crying at someone's wedding because she didn't have a boyfriend. The reason why she was smelly was because she didn't wash her underthings every day, and to make it even worse, her underthings needed replacing more often because they weren't washed regularly, so she was using her clothing ration coupons faster than she should have been. The real kicker? The soap ad was apologising for interrupted supply owing to the war; one of those placeholder ads designed to remind the public that Product X was a thing, so once the war was over, theyd want to buy it again. So poor Winnie couldn't have gotten enough soap to wash her undies frequently anyway. "Wedding bells, but not for Win/Guilty of the double sin/Perspiry undies steal her charm/Steal her coupons too."

I think in my country Mexico, part of the culture of, not just washing your hair every day, but taking a shower everyday comes from native mesoamerican culture (specifically from the Aztec-Mexica) where hey used to bathe everyday. The king bathed up to four times a day! It’s actually strange because people will jokingly exclaim that you’re dirty if you say you haven’t taking a shower that day and it’ll intensify the more days you say you haven’t taken a shower haha Interestingly though, bathtubs aren’t that ubiquitous here as they are in other western countries I think. Some old houses do have them, and fancy hotels usually do too. Maybe that’s also why it’s more normal to wash often, because taking a bath everyday sound like a lot, a lot of wasted water, but taking a shower can be done in five minute and can use as little as two buckets of water. Bathing and washing hair every day isn’t good for most people’s skin and hair, but it also depends a lot on lifestyle, where you live and the climate, skin conditions, hair type, products you use and just personal preference. Try living in my country with the type of heat we get and usually no air conditioning (too fancy for most houses) and you’ll understand why taking a cold or lukewarm shower can be so amazing. And forget about not getting your hair wet here, because that won’t cut it to cool you off, it’ll just make you feel more hot an muggy.

Really appreciate this! I have very fine hair (individual strands are barely visible on their own), though I have a normal density of it. I always thought it was essentially straight, and that there were just a few areas that stubbornly wouldn't be "straight like the rest of my hair". A friend of mine with curly hair told me to try the CGM and I eventually did - ut turns out that my hair is pretty wavy, and there are even actual ringlets around my hairline. But I had to stop washing it so frequently, and learn how to properly dry and style it, to discover this. I was a habitual daily hair washer until just a couple years ago, and I had no idea how unnecessary this was! This was a great video and I'm so happy to see that myth debunked - in retrospect, of course manufacturers just want us to need and buy more product. Looking forward to the Norse hair video!

But it destroyed my scalp and made it flaky, itchy, and dry (didn't help my skin either. Still relying on lotion to not feel like my hands are sandpaper). A pixie cut or a bob that needs very precise styling to look good does take much longer. In general working with your natural texture will lessen the time needed. The perfect content that I didn't know I wanted! I'd love more hair history content from you, it's so interesting (can't wait for the Viking hair video). As a Brazilian I can attest to the use of Sapindus, I heard about it from older family members. Iirc the smell is nice and herbal too. Nowadays Brazilian hair ideals are particularly harsh I feel. The ideal hair is REALLY long (ideally tailbone or even thigh length, but at least waist length), extremely blonde or ''real'' shades of ginger (maybe except for the very roots in case of blonde hair), straight or curled with a curling iron (heatless setting methods are ''weird''), and extremely clean and shiny. Literally unachievable, especially when you consider that the majority of the people in the country have dark hair, often curly or coily. I have hip length wavy hair and I'm still figuring out my routine to this day, since if I wash it twice a week my roots get oily by the 3rd day and if I wash it 3 times a week I get dry ends and all of my color goes down the drain, literally. I've tried the low shampoo technique but it didn't really work because I'm dandruff-prone. Brazil is famous for the obsession with personal hygiene and the ''dirty'' hair taboo is so strong that I was once shamed at work for using dry shampoo, and it's a really taboo product, even if you are using it for volume and to minimize oily roots only (even though oily roots =/= from dirty), because it implies you are a ''unclean woman'' which is the worst thing you can be.

This is a super interesting video, especially the part about the 20s bobs. I do find it frustrating when influences and magazines try to sell you over 5 different hair care product you MUST have in your routine. Now masks and dry shampoo and oils and whatever are essential apparently? And hairstylists are always trying to tell you salon products are just better when the manufacturers literally use the same ingredients and formulas as grocery store products. That said, I wish I could just wash my hair once a week (once a month sounds like a bad internet challenge to me, I will never understand how people do it.) Because I have seborrheic dermatitis and my hair is very straight, so I must wash it every other day or it’ll look like I poured olive oil in my scalp and it starts to smell funny 😅 Since it’s a chronic condition, if I stop using a medicated shampoo my scalp will quickly become red, irritated and scaly. It’s not fun. Also, soap used to be very, very harsh compared to what we have today. (Soap is actually not a human invention, surfactants are naturally produced for example when horses sweat, which is super interesting and weird, that’s why they get sort of frothy after a long run.) A gentle shampoo could probably be used every day if it’s well formulated. Usually, it needs to have cationic surfactants (and emollients like fatty alcohols in conditioners) which protect your hair from the damage of water that gives the hair a negative charge. Really the problem with washing every day is less about what product you use but how much water damages hair (and washes away hair dye). There are also places with harsher water or dry climates, which damage hair even more. In the end, how often you wash and how you care for your hair is a personal thing that depends on lifestyle, type of hair, climate, culture, budget, and just personal preference. No size fits all! Most dermatologists and doctors will tell you this. Most hairstylists, influencers and advertisers I’ve met want you to subscribe to a specific regime of hair care for some reason.

I'm still shocked to hear that daily hair washing is a part of American culture. And now I'm reading in the comments that some parents used to regularly perm their children's hair ?! I mean, I've also been exposed to the ads and misinformation, but the general "received view" where I grew up was that you should wash your hair every week or every few days depending on your lifestyle and body. I got scolded by my mom when I started washing my hair every other day as a teen. Not even hair stylists tell us to wash our hair daily, quite the opposite. And regarding perms, I have pretty straight hair, but really wanted it to be curly when I was an insecure teen, and I got into an argument with the hairdresser I was seeing because she absolutely refused to damage my hair with the procedure required for a perm. She was very serious about "talking some sense into me". It's not that perms aren't fashionable, she just said that it's more appropriate for older women who have already somewhat damaged or at least mature hair. I was so confused why she was so adamant, but I eventually agreed. Needless to say, I left with straight hair and I still haven't gotten a perm, more than a decade later. I just dye it orange from time to time. Child or the '70s-'80s, I remember the whole "boost your self-esteem with one wash" advertising. Also, my mother... daily wash and condition, home blowout, hot curler set, rat/tease to infinity, and spray until it doesn't move hair routine. She was so proud that I learned to count to 30 by watching her curl her hair. I must say, in the late 80's early '90s, I was not immune to the daily hair torture: daily wash and condition, alcohol-based "natural" curling product, high heat defuse, straightening my bangs and sides... then swim practice. Yeah, totally fried hair...

Such a great video, as always!! I've always had really long hair, and growing up I was told that I had to use shampoo and conditioner daily to keep it clean. It wasn't until I got my hair dyed in my twenties and I talked to the stylist that I learned that I shouldn't be washing my hair every day! Also, the "short hair is less work" myth is surprisingly common and very ingrained. Whenever someone with short hair complements me on my hair, they often say that they can't imagine putting in the effort to maintain long hair. And they don't believe me when I say that my hair is next to no work! I wash it twice a week and take like 5 minutes a day to brush and braid. I think their thought process is something like "my hair takes X time to care for, so if my hair were three times as long I would have to spend 3X time on hair care." When in reality, short and long hair styles are entirely different beasts.
@ragnkja
@ragnkja Год назад
While my long hair may not take any less time to care for than if it was short, I spend far less of that time dealing with tangles and knots, which I think you’ll agree is far less fun than braiding and pinning up the hair. Washing it less frequently also means way less time spent showering and then drying my hair.

I remember when shampoo commercials started saying "Now you can wash your hair every day" (as if of course you'd want to). There were a lot of implied "shoulds" in those commercials, and it was always clear to me that this was a gimmick to sell more shampoo. I also remember before that that there was a meme of "I can't go out tonight; I have to stay home and wash my hair." I never liked shampooing my hair, though the lack of conditioner when I was young made it worse (taaaangles); I have Jewish hair too, though not as curly as yours.

I’ve had a pixie cut for almost seven years and I only wash is 1-2 times a week. I usually just run my fingers through it to get it to lay how I want before letting it air dry and I don’t have to do anything else to get it to look fine. When I first got a pixie cut it did take me time to figure out how to get it to lay right with little work, but now I’ve found a cut that I like and easy to manage. The only product I put in my hair after washing it is a leave in conditioner. I rarely miss my hair being long.

In the winter it takes about 4-5h to airdry, it become incredibly frizzy if I try to blowdry it... o.o No thanks to every-day washing! I have a similar issue-- my hair is apparently fine-textured but it is VERY dense. Anything past my chin takes multiple hours to air dry, I can literally feel the weight, and I go through product like nobody's business. On top of short hair just suiting my personal style better, I've never been able to grow it long enough for braiding or other low-effort protective styles to be an option. And I have Brain Reasons for needing very low-effort care routines, so using ten thousand hair masks and leave-in treatments and irons is simply not gonna work! My solution now is to get short cuts that don't require a ton of styling to look decent, wash the hair with gentle shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days, and use a small-ish amount of dry shampoo as needed. No other products, never blow dry, brush frequently with a fine-tooth comb to get whatever natural oils evenly distributed. I've been complimented on my hair health by some stylists, but I've also been tsk-tsked (and offered Stuff To Buy) if they happened to get me on a sweaty/no-shampoo day, so I'd be interested to know if any actual professionals have tips for hair like this!

The downside is that it does need to be washed every day, but it takes a short time and doesn't need conditioner(for my greasy, thick, straight hair). All I had to do after the shower was to apply one hair product and let it air dry. So that statement about a pixie needing a lot of work depends of the type of hair of the wearer, but the washing thing yes, I couldn't go out with my hair like I had it when i woke up. For much of my life once it gets a certain length (usually between mid back and tailbone) it ends up straw like and full of split ends requiring a chop back of about 6 inches. With my most recent chop last month I have been looking into hair care both for encouraging my natural wavy curls (never done in 26yrs) and how to keep my long hair end healthier than I have thus far. I have realized that my mom who has always had short hair never thought to teach me "long hair" care and I am now learning all about protective hairstyles and oils and such. Your video on medieval "cleaning" of the hair using a comb and coverings has intrigued me since I have been looking for ways to extend my wash day cycle from 2x a week to once a week (was at 3x a week when I started college but reduced to 2 before graduating). I used to wash my hair twice a week, and it reached a daily shampoo at some point, with me not understanding while my curls were all sad and as cute as tumbleweed balls. I cut my hair in a short curly bob back in 2015 and kept it that way until 2020, when I used the lockdown to finally start following historical methods of haircare. Now my hair is trained to be washed with shampoo and water once a month, and in between I carefully keep it clean with a bristle hair brush and a set of combs to keep my scalp clean and properly apply the sebum from the roots to the lengths (curly hair meaning that it doesn't happen on its own and needs a little help with a brush). Now my hair is much healthier, growing like crazy and I can easily pull Turn of the Century hairstyles with only small hairrats for added puffiness. No need for hairspray or grocery store dry shampoos to give texture to my hair, I can easily do everything with just a good brushing, a comb, some bobby pins and a box of homemade dry shampoo (50/50 corn starch and rhassoul, a few drops of rosemary and lavender to keep the scalp clear of anything dodgy). I'm thinking of trying the rice water rinse though, for added shine and strength. Edit: lol @ the "isn't your hair the nicest right after you washed it" because I wanna yell NO SUSAN, IT'S ALL LIMP AND SLIPPERY AND I NEED TO DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF BOBBY PINS TO SET MY FANCY 1900 BUN BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HOLD FOR SHIT. The Viking hair video is scheduled for early September, so you may have to sit through a video of me learning tailoring first 🤣

My favorite part of about the dandruff thing is that there's now studies that show that having a LOT of dandruff is associated with skin inflammation related to overgrowth of a fungus normally found on the scalp and like.... learning that actually made me stop resisting using dandruff shampoo. Everyone always tried to pressure me into using it because of DANDRUFF but no one ever said it would help my scalp not feel CONSTANTLY HORRIFICALLY ITCHY 24/7!!! That wasn't caused by dandruff, that was caused by overgrowth of a fecking FUNGUS that dandruff shampoo helps control >.>

Yeah that's the biggest issue that dandruff shampoo marketing has caused. The medication in things like Head&Shoulders is great for that kind of overgrowth, but that's NOT what most people have when they have "dandruff" or flaky scalp.

On the other end of the spectrum, I am nursing a headache because I tried to go one day without washing my hair. I am extremely tender headed and something about showering without getting my hair wet gives me a headache 12 hours later

Im a diy hair gal. I only use shampoo once a month. I'll do the rest of the month:soapnuts, ambunu, apple cider vinegar, and yogurt masks. I love henna sooq's products. I use their cowash, shampoo, and henna. There shampoo bars, bottle shampoo, and cowash are all natural and handmade. And it doesn't dry out my scalp like regular shampoo. Also chickpea flour is good for hair washing too.

My mom grew up in the 70's and now it's making so much sense why she feels the need to wash her hair once a day

Thank you for a great video. I have long slightly curly hair, and washing it with commercial shampoos was always a pain. I hated that I could never 'have' the hair in any of the commercials, as it didn't sheet/flow the way the models hair in the commercials did. I fell in love with natural ingredient shampoo bars about 10 years ago. I wash my hair less often now, and don't feel that it is greasy even after a week between washes. On the rare occasions it feels dry, I use a hair oil. Overall, my hair and scalp are much happier now.

I promise you, none of those models' hair behaved that way outside of photoshoots 🤣 The problem is that they act like it's a look achievable by normal humans when it actually took a team of stylists, lighting techs, et c to make it happen.

@@SnappyDragon Agreed, but my 16 yr old self didn't know that then, and as with most people, we keep trying new things. Peer pressure, and consumerism are a mess. It took years to understand all of the 'effort' behind the scenes in the commercials to sell a product. I'm looking forward to more myth busting.

great video! I rly enjoyed the skits in-between i really enjoy the way coming out and braiding my hair has become a wind down evening thing for me i know of a psychiatric ward that makes you wash your hair every day while taking a shower the pure rage i experience thinking about that and the things it causes in the TEENAGERS that are the patients but well that's like the smallest problems

My hair is knee length… I wash it once a month it’s not dirty. It’s in a braid or a bun. I use stupidly expensive hair care for the most part because I don’t need that much of it. It’s entertaining to see the hair care myths. 😂 I always enjoy your hair videos

That is one of the perks of not washing so often, we can use the Really Good Stuff without ruining our budgets!

Re cosmetics advertising: the very long-running campaign that I found offensive on SO many levels is one from a perfume company: "Promise her anything but give her Arpège". Not a hair product, but...

Yes, because I definitely want perfume more than, say, honesty and good communication! [sigh]

Im going to keep washing my hair daily for my own comfort. It turns into a sad, flat oil slick by day 2 if I don’t. And yes, the oil does make me feel uncomfortable. Tried not washing for a week to see if my hair “stopped making oils”. Didn’t work. Tried it again another time. Oil monster again.
