Definitely agree with Tessa Dare, they read like a romcom and have very easily likeable characters and the plot is not overly complicated

I think Jennifer Ashley is such a smart choice, especially if you like mysteries. I actually recommended Ian to a man who looooves mysteries for that reason and totally forgot about it. And I agree Julia Quinn is such a great starting point, she really makes that time period accessible.

Any historical romance by Julie Garwood is great. The Secret & Ransom are my favorite books. Followed by The Bride & The Wedding. ❤😊

My first historical romance was 'A Kingdom of Dreams' (25ish years ago), and I think it holds up well.

I do think Lisa Kleypas is a good "gateway" author into historical romance (and contemporary too à la the Travis'). Courtney Milan is another one I always suggest, as well as Susan Elizabeth Phillips (for both their historical and contemporary books). Grace Burrows is fantastic for people who really enjoy classic books because her writing style feels so "vintage" to me, very similar to Jane Auston or the Brontë sisters in tone. For me it was Jude Devereux, Julie Garwood,, and Catherine Anderson (when I was like 11) and I think those would also be a good starting place for beginners as well.

I think Courtney Milan is a really good place to start for non-romance readers. And it's not purely historical, but I kind of see the Parasol Protectorate series as a bridge as well for fantasy readers.

Historical Romance is my favourite romance subgenre 😍 The first historical I read after a really long slump is The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare and I always recommend it to people who want to try historical romance for the first time. It's easy to understand, it's funny, romantic and sexy ❤ And I totally agree that a Julia Quinn book would also make a great place to start!

My first ever romance read not just historical was Hearts Aflame by Johanna Lindsey. I read that years ago way back in high school. I'm 38 now. So I've been reading romance in general for over 15 years. I think each person varies. I would just tell someone to pick something that sounds appealing to them if they don't like it then ask for suggestions. Mostly I just read what I want, sometimes I look for suggestions.

My introduction to HR was Maya Banks - In Bed with a Highlander. The whole trilogy was really good and the highlander aspect was very approachable vs. London society which can be confusing or overwhelming to the novice. It was the first series that made me realize I DO like romance, but I don't like angst. (I need my romance set in a bigger world than the modern "Nerotica". I define nerotica as more modern with a combination of insecurity and poor communication driving the story.) So the Highlander world was much easier to transition into historicals (for me!). Then I started on the Regency/Victorian HRs. So for anybody needing an introduction, I think Maya Banks is great (or even Garwood could work). HOWEVER, I agree that Tess Dare is hilarious and is also a great starting point....

I started with the Girl Meets Duke series by Tessa Dare and absolutely fell in love with the genre. I binged the whole series in like 3 days hahah I'm currently reading The Bridgertons series and loving it (Julia's writing is so witty). I still consider myself a newbie when it comes to historical romances, tho, so I can't wait to read the other books you recommended!

You've put together such a great bunch of recommendations, I feel like there's something for everyone in this list ❤ And I agree that the Hathaways or Wallflower Series may be a good place to start with Lisa Kleypas. I started with Dreaming of you and unfortunately I didn't like it much and didn't pick up another Lisa Kleypas for a while after that. Derek was too much for me personally lol. And ofcourse the MacKenzie Series is just 🔥🔥😍

Great choices! Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas (from the Wallflowers onwards) are the two authors I recommend most for people trying to get into historicals. Sarah Maclean is another great one, and Evie Dunmore's 2 books seem as if they got a quite a few new people into historical romance. *-)

I started reading the duchess's deal last night and I am almost done with this this morning. I have dyslexia so sometimes it's hard for me to read historical just because some of the wording is not stuff that I would normally read. So for me to be almost done in less the 24hours is amazing.

I love the look of chokers, but I can’t stand the way they feel. Thanks so much for this video! I’m new to historical, and I’m always looking for suggestions. I’m reading a lot of Tessa Dare. I started with the Girl Meets Duke series and enjoyed that. I just read the first book in the Castles Ever After series, and it was great.

The title I always recommend to first timers is Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. Other authors I suggest are Lisa Kleypas, Sarah MacLean, Anne Gracie, Laura Lee Guhrke, Jennifer Ashley, Mary Balogh, Courtney Milan, and Elizabeth Hoyt. We're so lucky to have so much quality fiction to choose from now. The first historical I was ever exposed to was Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rodgers. My cousins had it on their bookshelf when I was babysitting for them back in the 70's. It was so rapey and gross I don't think I tried any again until Jude Deveraux's Velvet series more than ten years later. She and Johanna Lindsey were pioneers who pushed the genre into the future by leaps and bounds.
