Anyone who has gone through law school in the last fifty years has come across the case of Loving v. Virginia (as Amanda A. referenced just yesterday). Virginia used to have a 1924 law that criminalized interracial marriage, whites and colored people could NOT get married. A convicted couple appealed their year in prison sentence up through the court system. In 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court struck down that Virginia law. And to rehab it's image I suspect that this ad agency created this 1969 slogan. If you are going to claim to look into the history of the slogan, do some actual research into history.
I was about to flip my noggin after watching this clip. I just wanted a brief refresher of the case and came across these dim wits. “Virginia is for Lovers” has a beautiful historical origin. Most of my family lives in Waterford and we take pride in the overturning of this law.
"The slogan Virginia is for lover's is recognised all over the world"??? I live in the UK and haven't heard it ever and i doubt many outside of the the US have!
I'm so disappointed. I always thought it had to do with championing the landmark Supreme Court case [1967], Loving v. Virginia. Legalizing interracial marriages. Cool motto, just not as deep and meaningful as I thought it was. The real history that it was created by an Advertising agency makes sense from a commercial point of view.
