These include (but are not limited to) the XPTs, Xplorers, Endeavours, Hunters, Waratahs, OSCARs, Millenniums, Tangaras, C sets, K sets, S sets, V sets and the Alstom Metropolis from Sydney Metro. Hmm... I’m gonna have to go with the Millennium trains. I love the really cool looking Internal Destination Indicators, simple design (especially the doors) and the beautiful brand new (at the time of release) interiors. They really were, just like the ads said, nearly everything you could ask for back then.
Obsessed with Trains It's because they need to modernise the system apparently, as the new fleet will likely be faster and more comfortable. Sadly, they have to upgrade tracks and stations on the Blue Mountains Line, as these trains are much wider than V Sets.
I was 5 when the V sets were introduced and over the years have had literally thousands of trips in them. I love them, quiet and comfortable. The new trains make me feel like i'm sitting in a doctors waiting room.
At the time of introduction the V set were one of the most comfortable commuter trains in the world. I will be sad to see them go many memories as a kid catching one into Sydney Terminal.
My experiences with the V sets have been rather positive, even considering their age. They seem rather quite from both the inside and outside with rather lavish interiors. It's interesting that they were manufactured for nineteen years, at the same time as many trains from different generations. Some of those trains, such as the S sets, XPTs and Tangaras, also represent major leaps and changes in trains design.
Apparently the first ever double deck train in NSW was a freaking cattle truck that transported wool and sheep. Made in 1959. They'res one at Thirlmere
I prefer the V-set over the newer ones even though they don't have the LED stop displays in the carriage etc. For ride quality and space I think they're still the best.
V Sets are My favourite sets out of all of Transport Sydney’s trains. They used to have 2, 3, 6 Car formations but they got withdrawn and some ended up forming the 4 Car formations we see today
@dethuponianproductions6377 incorrect. The 2 car V sets had 1 motor car and 1 driving trailer car just like the 2 car suburban "T" sets, which later became the L sets to free up the T set designation for the Tangara sets. The DKM motor cars were the last motor cars to be built with pantographs in 1989.
The V class multiple units have provided comfortable and largely safe transport for many years. They're due for replacement with update mechanicals, but from the look of things, the replacement sets will be providing a lower level of passenger comfort and amenity. Time will tell any improvement in performance and reliability.
I don't get why they have to be withdrawn. They're perfectly fine as they are. The seats are comfortable, there's air conditioning, they're pretty quiet and they're spacious. By the looks of the new intercity trains, I'm not gonna like them at all. V SETS ARE THE BEST! SAVE THEM!
Matt Allen they are phasing them out because they are dangerous what I mean by dangerous When the v sets were first released when a v set stops at a short platform all doors are unlocked so if the train is passed the platform you could open the door even tho you’re passed the platform don’t worry the oscars have a feature that the guard can unlock any door
kaits23 They’re mostly getting rid of them because they still open all doors at short platforms. These newer trains will have the ability to only open doors close to the platform, much like the Oscars can.
"They will be withdrawn when the new intercity trains enter service in 2019" It's almost 2024 and there's still no progress at all (hooray for the v sets)
Finally! Well done! You have made the fans happy :) Also... Ninth! 1:58 Why is one of the new intercity trains going to Wollongong? We already got rid of all our V Sets Sad that they had to go...
Thanks for the comment! I didn't take much note that one of the trains had "Wollongong" on its desto. It's worth noting that the new trains won't only replace the V sets but will allow some H sets to be reallocated to suburban use in Sydney, so that might explain it.
I remember that the first batch of V sets were originally called U sets, like the single-deck trains that came before them, had five row windows on upper-lower decks on all power and trailer cars, slightly different interior, mild-steel under frames started rusting overtime which lead to they’re withdrawn in 2006 and had mechanical issues which lead to these first batch cars being trailer cars with DTM cars powering them by the early 1980s. Interesting
That's fine. The V sets have a very long history. They were manufactured right through the time of the S sets, K sets, C sets, XPTs and Tangaras, with three of those trains (the S sets, XPTs and Tangaras) representing major leaps in train design and still being in service today.
Indeed with the last batch DKM/DKT cars being more in line with the Tangaras such as electronic interior doors with buttons and some more modern features
4 years later and D sets aren't in service, and they wont be until another few more years bc of safety issues meaning V sets will last longer. They'll probably get delayed even more!
Y sets, because 8car v set can't fit in suburban stations like town hall on RU-vid there was a v set in town hall and it only had 6cars so that's why I choose the 6car Y sets
little did he know the v sets are still in service to this day but they are sadly due to be replaced with the (NIF) D sets this year and next year but because they didn't order enough a few V sets might still be in service
Some facts about a series emu it can be two or four cars and it runs Thornlie Armadale midland ant Fremantle some times Mandurah and Joondalup lines and we have a second electric train called b series emu
You are wrong. The oldest locomotives still in service in NSW is the 40 class 1951/52 followed by the 42 class 1955/56. Foreign locomotives like SSR's GM10 1951 and B class 1951/52 predate the 44 class by a couple to a few years. A couple being 2 years and a few years being about 6 years.
You what the New South Wales government should do do a second city decker program and even give v sets a new looks also the intercity trains are to big for the blue mountains line so save the v sets
The U/V sets official name is Double Deck InterUrban or DDIU for short. The rail enthusiasts nickname for them is V sets because of their vacuum toilets and V target plate designation.
The only scheme that superseded the Blue Goose and Candy schemes was the blue and yellow "Intercity" scheme and it was superseded with the Hungry Jack's inspired "cheeseburger" scheme. You can't say that the "Citydecker" or blue "Central Coast" candy schemes superseded anything because only a handful of cars wore those colours, like the grey and yellow fronts. Only the late DIM, DJM & DKM cars wore the Candy scheme being built in the SRA era. I personally loved that Candy front with the yellow interiors.
Well the early cars up to the DCM motor cars entered service as U sets, it wasn't until the vacuum toilets cars entered service and the original toilets changed that the set letter was changed to V set.
I don’t know why, but I hate V Sets. They are too different from the rest of the network, interior anyways. Just like the new Waratah livery for the B Set Waratahs.
Interesting thought there! They are rather unique, being narrower than the other electrics and only operating on interurban lines (even the H set OSCARs run suburban services in Sydney to an extent)
They need to be different as they have a very different role. They go much further out, journeys of 2-3 hours. They also have to deal with narrow, serpentine and steeply graded track in the mountains, and share track with lots of freight and XPT traffic on the Newcastle line. That said, the air con is anaemic at best and the fixed arm rests are always fun :(
