@@DoctorHobby The guard operates the doors, & tells the driver when it is safe to depart the platform. The guard is also a contact point for customer service (answering questions, provide first aid, announcements, deal with passenger disturbances, assisting wheelchair users etc) In a safeworking operation point of view the guard is responsible for faults & failures on the train between the floor & roof. The driver is responsible below the floor & above the roof. The guard will also assist the driver when it comes to manually winding electric points on the tracks, & dividing the 8 car T set into 2 x 4 car blocks. THe guard does have a railway uniform but no weapon.

For anyone who doesn't know a lot about the Tangara train, the Tangara trains entered service in around 1980 and the G sets were built to run on the electrified Intercity lines in lieu for the first batch of V sets that had corrosion in the underframes so the G sets filled in for the V sets during that time. The Tangara trains run on the following lines Sydney Trains Suburban: T1 North Shore and Western line from Berowra to Emu Plains or Richmond via Central T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line from Bondi Junction to Waterfall and Cronulla T9 Northern line from Hornsby to Gordon via Central NSW Trainlink Intercity: South Coast line from Bondi Junction to Port Kembla

1988 the Tangara's arrived for the State Rail Authority. While Goninan's were building the G sets, the Victorian Government put an order in for 1 demonstration set called the 4D which stood for Double Deck Development and Demonstration. This train was a spin off of the G sets but it was different in so many ways. It was lower, tapered in on the sides of the bottom deck, it had a different train management system to be "compatible" with Melbourne's ComEng train sets. What the Victorian Government should have done was get atleast 2 4 car sets built and kept the Tangara power and train management system. Victorian's hated the 4D because of the dwell time at stations.

There are 2 versions of the Tangara, the T set is used for suburban duns and doesn't have toilets, the G set was used for intercity runs while a batch of V sets was being taken out of service due to corrosion in the underframes of the V sets and then the G sets were converted back to T sets afterwards, Ex G sets can be identified by the black or red plate having T100+

Hi the Tangara or T set was introduced in 1988 as the 3rd generation of electric suburban trains. Your set is in the "Candy Livery" the colour scheme of State rail authority from 1980s to mid 1990s. The T sets are made up of 4 car sets and mostly run as 8 car sets these days. The sets of lights forward are marker, ditch, and fog lights. The blue light at the rear is the guards compartment. The red lights are the tailing lights. The V set you have is early 2000s to 2010 in the cityrail livery and are unfortunately due to be replaced in the next few years. I hope this info helps.

Thank you, kindly! It does, indeed! But I still don't understand what the guards compartment is.. is there a security guard in there or something?

@@DoctorHobby In Nsw and Queensland railways the role of the guard is to make sure passengers can get on and off the train easily and signal the driver when the train is due to leave the station. In Nsw they open and close the passenger doors, on older rolling stock of the first 3 generations of Sydney trains they also made the announcements of the services stopping pattern. So the guard is part of the train crew

@@DoctorHobby When a train is at a station the guard is the one that whistles to announce the train will depart (He/She has a black box up on the station that will light up to let him/her know it's safe to blow the whistle)... He/she also rings a bell that is heard inside the drivers cabin at the front of the train... The driver then closes the doors (Stand clear, doors closing), a second bell rung by the guard will ring in the front cabin to indicate the platform is safe for the driver to depart... The guards actually play a crucial role in the operations of (Sydney) trains... I'm not sure how they do it in the other states such as Victoria as many things are different between the two states (That's a story for another day) 😂🤣 The blue light on the train itself is just to indicate that the guard is using the end door at the back... Hope this helps ☺
@markpusko2480
@markpusko2480 Год назад
@@Royal_BloodLust Your information is so wrong. What black box are you referring to, a guards indicator light? That is a white repeater light in a black box & when illuminated shows the guard that the signal in front of the train is not indicating stop. It's only indirectly related to a guard blowing a whistle & not every platform has one. The driver doesn't operate the doors, the guard does. The guard & driver communicate using various bell signals from the old days before intercoms between train & driver. The guard gives 1 bell to depart, 2 bells means emergency stop (such as passenger trapped in the doors). In an 8 car T set (2 x 4 cars) the guard is always positioned in the leading crew cab of the 5th position carriage. This was due to concerns if the scharfenberg coupler between the 4th & 5th carriage disconnects enroute & the emergency brake doesn't apply the guard can activate it.
