History of Cancer in the Royal Family

With the unfortunate news of Catherine, the Princess of Wales' cancer prognosis, combined with King Charles' own cancer diagnosis, many have been wondering whether this is the first time that cancer has hit the royal family. Between Queen Elizabeth II, and her ancestors, it is clear that cancer seems to run in the royal family. With geneticists wondering whether the royal family may possess a genetic predisposition to cancer, today's video will be breaking down the royal family members who have suffered with cancer.

The Royals speaking openly about the cancer diagnoses, treatment, and warning signs could raise public awareness and raise funding and resources for research.

To those complaining in the comments: this is a historical examination video about royals who have had cancer. It does not imply that the cancers from the Tudor era have led to the cancers in contemporary members. Nor has it suggested that Kate, who married into the family, has cancer because she is part of the royal family. Did y’all even watch the video??

You do realise that the Princess of Wales married into the family, so therefore her cancer couldn't be connected to the royal disposition of having cancer?
@borisc6714
@borisc6714 4 месяца назад
That maybe so, but her three children might have inherited the Windsor genetic predisposition form their father, and if she is also predisposed to cancer genetically, that may increase the chance that THEY would suffer from cancer later in their life...

Royalty is related to each other. Often times they come from the same bloodline

@@RoBA7they’re related. Both William and Kate descend from Sir Thomas Fairfax who died about 1520 and his wife Agnes Gascoigne who descended from Lionel Duke of Clarence, second son of Edward III. "That makes them 15th cousins. William's relationship comes through his mother.”

@@chandleryoung9515 Yes, I read that but didn’t count it;) As I also read that probably every English Person is related to one another far down the line ;) ;) or even with the Royals. Maybe even me here on the continent as my ancestors were kelts who were also spread around in the UK;) And this far away related does for sure NOT matter in genetic family deceases. Which were spoken about here as you know.

As a physician, this is annoying speculation. Cancer is exceedingly common - listed as the 2nd most common cause of death worldwide (after cardiovascular disease). Cancer genetics is very complicated - very rare is X gene causes Y cancer a truism - instead it is X gene leads to increased risk of Y/Z/A/B/C cancers. Quite frankly, the fact that so FEW members of the royal family have verified cancer is amazing (and yes, I recognize that not all members are forthright with their health issues).

A bit of a silly video The modern royals are barely related to the Tudors, so any genes predisposing to cancer from back then wouldn't be present in modern Royals. Certainly not in someone who married in! The genetics of cancer are also pretty complicated

Royal or not, cancer is becoming more common, possibly because people are living longer and have more time for the expression of genetic degeneration (look up telomeres - the more times DNA divides in cell replacement, ie the older you get, the more likely the DNA can start to get faulty), not to mention environmental factors like the much greater amount of radiation most of us are exposed to nowadays (also causing DNA degeneration). Without any dramatics, two of my uncles and one aunt had different types of cancers and two out of three succumbed to theirs. One of my grandfathers died of cancer in his 60s and one of his sisters died of cancer in her '40s. At least one of my father's cousins died at 50. My brother has been in the throes of trying to get full assessment of a meningioma for several months (doctors not communicating with one another...) and I'm hoping he gets some attention before it's too late. My best friend died of cancer in his 30s. What I'm saying is - cancer is everywhere. My very best wishes to everybody who has to go through it - I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Catherine was a commoner, not of Royal blood. This may be of concern to her children, but marrying into the family didn’t “give” her the cancer gene.
