Wealthy, noble, clever and pretty, Georgiana Spencer - later Cavendish - might have been seen to have it all. But like her indirect descendent Princess Diana many years later, Georgiana would end up in an unhappy and unfulfilling marriage, coping by gambling, drinking and partying to excess. This video looks at the early part of her life, her marriage to William Cavendish, her involvement in the culture of her time, and how ultimately she ended up in an uncomfortable and scandalous ménage à trois situation with her best friend and her husband...

Absolutely - I think it's very telling that not only did she obviously gravitate towards it due to her parents' gambling when she was younger, but that a lot of her mother's reprimands were centred around it. I think Margaret understood she had helped facilitate Georgiana into that lifestyle through her own actions.

No, not exact. Diana admitted to Lady Colin Campbell that SHE was the first to cheat in the marriage with Barry Manakee. In reality, Diana had many lovers. She also said she didn’t blame Camilla for the way her marriage went. That it was the “ yes” men surrounding her husband she couldn’t stand. Diana found life in the RF too stifling & wanted out, but wanted Charles to file for divorce so she could look like the victim.

Wow, I can't wait to hear the rest💗 although everyone seem to think her life is parallel with her great niece Princess Diana, which I don't completely disagree, but in her case, I find her husband much more annoying. I mean he didn't like her and didn't bother himself to show her enough respect or attention either and the love triangle thing started in the half-way through of their married life and the other woman came to her life much years later and it wasn't like her husband being obsessed with another from the start, which honestly makes it more heartbreaking, because it means he could love her, he just didn't want to or didn't bother to💔💔💔
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople 2 месяца назад
You're right, there's a lot of parallels, but people often try to compare them directly - which as you say, isn't quite correct. Plus Georgiana turned to gambling and alcohol to cope, which Diana didn't...although, I suppose Diana had eating disorders which could be seen as the same desperate desire for control in their own lives. And yes, William didn't even try to care about Georgiana, whereas I think the situation for Charles and Diana was different on all sides.

Cavendish was the ancestor of Bess of Hardwick. Georgina was a contemporary of Marie Antoinette; imagine having a friendship to Mr. Fox and his parliament. She is a fabulous figure of history, and I recommend anybody dig deeper and read a biography on her to gain a deeper respect of the woman, the era, as opposed to her gambling issues, poor choices, husband, and waste of brains. Ps. She is princess Diana’s relative and had more royal blood than any of the Windsors today (who are more Germanic than English).

@@aw6356 It's so funny, but when my kiddos were tutored at our local library, my daughter found a section on Bes of Hardwick and Georgiana; she picked it out for me, and it was so good. Written by Amanda Foreman (Whitbread recipient) titled: Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire. It was a great biography. Amanda Foreman left nothing off the table; political intrigue, fashionistas, relationships (husband) and an insight to an incredibly spirited/kind hearted woman (anyone who accepts her husbands bastard children as her own is a hero to me), and someone who was both smart, witty but sadly, misunderstood...she brought a spark to the lives of many. My heart goes out to her b/c she was born in the wrong era; similar to Marie Antionette; both women were brilliant, but because of gender, political limitations, and massive geopolitical changes, never met their true potential. Edward II Your second question is definitely harder! I think either Edward III or Henry II were the most successful, if measuring by what was expected of them as kings at the time. But if we're including legacy, I would say Edward III. He was a pretty good king in defending his country, supporting the economy, creating relations with allies, and he was a good husband to his queen (despite the obligatory affairs of medieval kings), and he listened to his advisors. He was seen as a strong, capable king, but was also well liked.

It's tough to pin one person down as I like a lot of different figures, but I think my favourite is probably Empress Matilda. I'm fascinated by her entire life and how strong she was, and I think England would have turned into a very different place had she been able to become queen.

It is traditionally 'Georg-jay-na' as I'm saying it, but there is a second modern pronunciation of it as 'Georg-gee-ana', which is likely because it's not a name that's heard spoken aloud a lot.

Today we say the name as it’s written but in the 18th century, words and names were often pronounced differently than today. You will have noticed that many old aristocratic names are not pronounced at all how they are spelled.

I'm so confused about the pronunciation of her name. Everyone seems to say it as Georgaina but it is spelled Georgiana, like George-ee-ah-na. Even in the film about her, they were transposing the A and I. What gives?
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople Месяц назад
Welcome to random British pronunciations! 😂 Honestly, I'm not sure why the pronunciation is that way, but it definitely is - I have a friend whose little girl has the same name, and is also pronounced 'George-jay-na'. Lots of people do also say it 'George-gee-ana' now, which I think of as a modern pronunciation. Neither is wrong, but Georgiana Cavendish was alive when the first pronunciation was used, so I stuck with that. ☺
