This video is a remake of my old(er) colonialism video. This video does NOT seek to glorify, justify or advance colonialism or colonialist principles/worldviews. It is solely meant as historical documentation. Any hateful comments will be deleted. I also feel like I need to point something out about how to read the map If a nation simply claims a land, then it is shown in the palest color. If a country claims some land, those boundaries are recognized 'internationally' and it is treated as a province rather than a claim, but the native peoples do not recognize that claim/have not ceded that land/have not been subdued, then the region will be shown with colored borders. That means that the European nation in question considers that her land and that claim is recognized in a strictly legal sense, but is not actually colonized (or, in the case of Canada and the US, ceded). The reason this is important is because we often treat tribal lands as completely occupied, rather than simply claimed.

This is wrong. Colonialism did not start with the Portuguese and Spanish. Before the Portuguese and Spanish colonial empires, there were long before colonial empires like the Roman Empire! But even before the Roman Empire there were colonial empires like the Persian Empire. But even after the Roman Empire but before the Portuguese and Spanish Empires, there were colonial empires such as the Polish Empire. Because the Ruthenian territories were nothing other than Polish colonies, which were also exploited and settled. So it makes no sense to show the start of colonialism with the Portuguese and Spanish!

@animalpolitic6925 11 месяцев назад
This video shows the progression of colonialism as understood in the modern era. I am not too sure what you mean. Japan was included and it is part of East Asia. The Arab world was more similar to the colonized rather than the colonizers. The only Arab country which would come close to a colonizing power was the Ottoman Empire. But the Ottomans did not engage in colonialism in the way we understand it
@mintviper5213
@mintviper5213 11 месяцев назад
@animalpolitic6925 Oman had colonies in Africa (Zanzibar etc), research the Yarubid dynasty. You could indeed interpret Ottoman possessions outside of Anatolia as colonies, although the Ottoman empire is a Turkic country not Arab. Outside of the 1400's start date you could view the Arab expansions of the 600-700s as a colonial expansion with a lasting arabization effort. Also the ancient world was rife with colonialism but they are not directly comparable to the early modern colonial empires.

That’s right, at no point did muslims sweep through Africa, Anatolia and the balkans imposing their religion, law and authority.
@animalpolitic6925
@animalpolitic6925 11 месяцев назад
@@mintviper5213 I do agree with your point about the ancient world, as I explained in another reply. However, if you stretch a definition far enough, you could make it say anything. If you interpret things in a certain way, you can argue that Alexander's empire, New Kingdom of Egypt, Holy Roman Empire, Kingdom of Hungary, Barbarian Kingdoms and post-independence Brazil were all colonial empires. Ethnocentrism is a feature of all empires(sometimes just for practical reasons, as cynical as that sounds). The Ottoman Empire ruled over many peoples and had a Turkic elite, but this does not mean colonialism automatically. Similarly, maritime empires are not necessarily always colonial. I am not sure if Oman counts as a colonial state. I might be wrong, but to me it seems more like a feudal society(for the lack of a better term), Omani Zanzibar being a vassal state. The same reason for which I did not include ancient empires(I explained it in more detail in another reply) applies here.

The Ottoman Empire should count as well in my opinion. They were a vast multi ethnic empire with a ruling ethnic/religious class which had more rights than other ethnicities/religions, and were at constant war with colonial powers like Russia and Spain. Sure their expansion was more traditional, but so was Russia’s and they count.

Great work, thanks for uploading this. However the video tells the history of European colonialism between the 15th and 20th centuries, not the history of colonialism since the dawn of times. Colonizations happened long before the Renaissance in Europe. I would recommend to change the title as it is slightly missleading (something such as 'History of European Colonial Empires').

First of all, thank you for the feedback! Second of all, I did not forget about those, I chose not to represent them. Sure, colonies existed in many places and technically they would fit as 'colonial empires'(as in empires whose most territory is made up of colonies). Look past the technicalities and labels and you'll realize that Athenian colonies in Ionia were very different from New Spain. Colonial empires specifically are a thing associated with the modern era. Ancient colonies were a totally different breed from modern colonies. ColonialISM is a tricky term to define(and could be understood as an ideology which the ancient era did not have) and there are debates about where to draw the line. However, everyone can agree that European overseas empires between 1500-1945 were colonial first and foremost. I feel like including ancient colonies would obfuscate the larger point, which is representing the expansion of colonial empires as understood in the modern era. Equating ancient empires to modern ones would also paint a dishonest picture.

It's funny that in the end there are only a few circles: the Canary Islands, the Azores... which were never colonies. But from the Anglo-Saxon perspective, the conquests of the United States (i.e. its own current territory) don't count in the end. It's also a bit strange that in the end Russia doesn't appear anymore but the United States does (yes, the United States without a huge "colonial circle" that encompasses it entirely).

This is nonsense.

The video starts in the year 1433, so he probably wanted to make the Age of Discovery coincide with the European empires of the Modern Era.
@GreatPolishWingedHussars
@GreatPolishWingedHussars 24 дня назад
@@Tago-h1b But the title of the video contradicts your claim. In addition, errors regarding colonialism were also made after 1433 as I explained in my comment. Furthermore, there was no European colonialism in 1433 caused by discoveries. In fact, the Polish Empire came into being in 1385 with the takeover of Lithuania, making Poland the only European colonial power for over 100 years. By the way, I don't consider the Ottoman Empire to be European, which also became a colonial power like Poland in the 15th century.

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars Don't get upset, I was just trying to give a possible explanation, since the Azores were discovered in 1432-33. You will have to ask the author of the video.
@GreatPolishWingedHussars
@GreatPolishWingedHussars 24 дня назад
@@Tago-h1b Ok, if you want to look at it that way and see the discovery of uninhabited islands like the Azores as colonism, then European colonism began with the settlement of Iceland around the year 1000 by the Vikings. This was their only long-term colonization success because everywhere else their attempts at colonization failed. Well, the islands in the Mediterranean were also uninhabited and were colonized, such as Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, etc. Then, according to your definition, colonization would actually have begun in the Stone Age, because these islands were colonized by Europeans in the Stone Age.

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars I am not defining anything. You should read more carefully. In my first comment I name the Age of Discoveries. It's an historical era that goes from the 15th to the 17th century and is characterized by explorations by the Portuguese and Spanish, and later by the English, Dutch and French of practically all the oceans and coasts. Hence my mention of the Azores as a discovery (1432-33) and the beginning of European overseas colonialism. It's the only fact that fits the date. Chill out Man.
