2nd: Hans Niemann = next Bobby Fischer - Wesley So = current Bobby Fischer - Bobby Fischer's ghost = old Bobby Fischer - Beth Harmon = Bobby Fischer in another universe Each of these 4 'is a prodigy, had a rather dark childhood and is American'. Speaking of Wesley So Hikaru's (the rapid WFRCC) wife almost beat Wesley So's (the classical WFRCC) girlfriend! 2023 USCC - Indeed Carissa Yip won and thanked Wesley So as her secret second in the 2023 USCC closing ceremony speech. But in Carissa vs Atousa, Carissa was losing most of the game. 1952: A computer scientist named Arthur Samuel developed a program to play checkers, which is the first to ever learn the game independently. 1955: John McCarthy held a workshop at Dartmouth on “artificial intelligence” which is the first use of the word, and how it came into popular usage.

On compilers... 5:40 In 1951, Grace Murray Hopper pioneered the concept that pseudo-codes could be directly converted into machine language instructions, rather than just being interpreted. This led her and her team at UNIVAC to develop the A-0 program, an experimental system designed to perform such translations, which they referred to as a "compiling routine." However, the distinction of creating the first actual compiler, as it's understood in modern terms, often goes to Alick E. Glennie. He introduced AUTOCODE in 1952, a compiler that effectively transformed algebraic statements into machine language. While Hopper’s A-0 was developed earlier, it doesn't align completely with what we now consider a compiler. Consequently, Glennie's AUTOCODE is frequently acknowledged as the first true compiler in the field of computing. Source: Donald E. Knuth & Luis Trabb Pardo. The Early Development of Programming Languages.

FYI 2012 humans could not beat the strongest engines. Kasparov lost against Deep Blue in 1997, which was a super computer after all, but Kramnik could make it to draw against Deep Fritz 7 in 2002, but it was not a fair match, neither Deep Fritz was the strongest engine back then (one of the very strong though), so I believe it is after 2002 when a chess engine which could be run on a normal PC could destroy any human.

I don’t recall any chess in the film. However, one of the other code breakers working with Turing was CHOD Alexander who was two time British chess champion and represented England several times at the chess Olympiad. Not sure that Turing and Alexander were friends, certainly not if the film is to be believed

Harry Golembeck was also on the team. BTW, don't believe the film. Ever. I know of too many instances where historical or biographical movies are flat out incorrect or deliberate lies for dramatic purposes. In fact, I know of one case first-hand, because I watched a movie with someone who knew and had more than 50 times interviewed a person depicted in the movie and he told me it was 180 degrees a deliberate lie for dramatical purposes.

Next time you are in the UK the National Computer Museum at Bletchley Park is well worth a visit. I would not recommend the Bletchey Park Code Breaking Centre on the same site - and the two organisations are completly separate. The Computer Museum have all the original code breaking setups in full working order and staff to demonstrate them. It is easy to get to very close to the Bletchley railway station. From Memory I dont recall any chess in the recent film 'The Imitation Game' but there was an earlier film 'Enigma' that I have not seen.

I remember my first computer chess set circa 1980. It was a plastic, mobile unit for travel with a red LED readout, having three levels(?). The first was too simple and quickly moved. The second would bog down as the game progressed, taking an hour per move, and the third could take as much as 5 hours to accomplish its move. It was still an enjoyable unit, a bit above a toy but competitively slower than cold molasses.

So king safety. 1.e3 exposes the king on the fewest number of squares whilst allowing the queen and bishop the most squares to develop from. moving the d pawn exposes the king on a longer diagonal, but allows the dark square bishop to develop. The algorithem does not consider centre control a necessity. Otherwise it would value 1.e4 over 1.e3.

Nice one for mentioning the involvement of polish mathematicians the right way.

Among his many great achievements, Turing also ran a 2:46:03 marathon - not world class today but probably top 5 in England at the time.

I believe this (portrayed) is not enigma used by soldiers in the field (as stated in this video). It seems to be naval enigma, used by U-boat fleet since it features additional rotor.

I suppose Touring in the first game was calculating deeper than an actual computer against Kasparov. The first game was very impressive. Looking forward to the new series!

Thank you for giving proper credit to the Polish for giving Turing a big head start. I’m not Polish but I am from Chicago (large Polish population).

Let's not forget to mention Alan was Gay; was brutally given chemical castration treatment; stripped of all his acolades; ended his life as a 'non-person' with severe depression; committed suicide at only 42. OK?

Turing, a war hero in the highest sense of the word....responsible for perhaps saving millions of lives. Incredible. Thanks for posting this; and the wrongs that were done against him; well, this is part of the atonement that he's received...posthumously unfortunately.

Qxd6 seems entirely believable to me for such a primitive AI, I am amazed it played so well up until that point. The game against Kasparov seems much more in line with my expectations: blindly ignoring threats and "just playing moves". Could it be that Turing only computed the moves that made sense to him to save time, thus (accidentally) playing in a more human style?

I think its more just the primitive nature of the algorithm. Its points system seems to be based entirely on its own position as opposed to the overall position of both sides, as a result it blindly ignores threats the opponent is making. It only seems to play defensively when forced, i.e. a check/recapture. Agad's second video seems to go into more detail though.

I highly recommend checking out video's guys have uploaded on YT with Retro Consoles vs Retro Consoles in Chess. I watched Atari 2600 vs Intellivision and Intellivision vs Colecovision. Fascinating stuff to see what old console had the stronger Chess Engine.

I would like to see games of famous GMs against TASC computers, those computers were among the strongest of their time. I read somewhere there were less than 10 TASC R40 computers manufactured. I suggested 2 games against those computers in my other comment. Cheers Antonio! -Dario, an old subscriber of this channel :)
