This video looks into the history of the Hull and Selby Railway Company's swan song, the Bridlington Branch, an important line that travelled through some of the most important towns of the East Riding.

He's a fascinating character. I can never quite decide if he's awful or a genius. Taking money from wealthy investors, screwing them over, but using the money, mostly, to build or buy even more railways and form the most comprehensive and cohesive network in the country... I dunno! A proper dodgy visionary!

Maybe a Robin Hood if the railways ? I suppose if it wasn’t for his vision/fraud many lines may not have been built. Maybe more might have been finished. He is certainly an enigma but clearly had a passion for the railways

Fantastic history lesson. My brother moved up from the south some years back so through that I have an interest in the area. I'm completely on your wavelength re the railway sign that was stolen and ended up in your garden. Your attitude shows what respect you have for history and things being where they should be. I think part of the attraction of railways is the seeming permanence of railway track in an ever changing world. There's something quite delightful finding an old track out in the sticks, even finding remnants is satisfying. As for the tiny station behind the Wheeler Street trolley depot, being born down Wheeler Street opposite the depot, I well remember the railway line running behind the depot in my childhood. Not the station though, well before my time. I never understood the closure of the Beverley to York line. Never made sense to me. This line was a conduit that offered access to the north and Scotland. Maintaining the connection from Hull to the south via Doncaster made sense, but severing a viable connection from Hull to the north didn't jibe. Political self interest, of which we're all aware, may have been involved here dunno.... Another great commentary History Nerd, well done...!

I'll be covering the Hull to York route later this year, I'm going to be doing a new series called Lost Railways of Yorkshire and the stretch between York and Beverley is one of the first on my list!

3:04 Ah, this is the spot where it crosses Spring Bank, which I can remember seeing way back in the early '80s or even late '70s when we would go from my Grandma's on Wymersley Road into the city Centre. I was always curious about where the line used to go and why it was closed. I shall have to cycle it one day, when we are allowed to travel.

Entirely possible, I'm in and out of there filming the track treatment diesels at the moment for another series I'm working on about the old BR diesel locos!

I believe there were plans to modernise the Beverley to York line but they were put on hold because of the Beeching Report. The first automated level crossing in the country was on that line at Warthill

A note about Burton Agnes - it was the site of the last German POWs to die in WW2 ... Well, those in British control at least. Also holds the record for the shortest accident report running at just 4 pages if one includes the front cover

Hi Karl, thanks! I would love to use more photos in my videos, but finding people with the copyright to images who are willing to give permission is really difficult. I've managed to find a handful for a couple of previous videos, but it's much harder than you'd think!

I'm finding this series fascinating. I recently played a game called NIMBY rails (early access) where you get a map of the world with the railways removed and get to build whatever networks you fancy. I have been making all the old railways in the North East and Yorkshire and read a little about these railways as I built them, but this is filling in a lot of the detail and flavour. Will you be doing a series about Hull's trams? I enjoyed adding them to my network in game (and expanding them to the newer parts of the city!).

I'll certainly be doing an episode on the tram system and how it shaped Hull's roads, I've just been working out access to one of the last remaining bits of track in the remains of an old tram shed so I can film the tracks before they're developed over!

Because that's not part of the Hull & Selby Railway's story, but part of the York and North Midland Railway. The line was technically owned by one company south of Brid, and another north of it.

@hullhistorynerd thank you for enlightening me. Years ago, I'd read something different in a little booklet in the waiting room at Driffield Station, but It did seem to contradict itself when referring to different parts of the lines.

I remember when Bridlington station was complete, the Excursion platforms and ticket offices were still there. You have confirmed there was an extension down to the Harbour top, there were visible remains of a small goods yard until around 1970, rather surprisingly nobody I knew could confirm the line ran to there. The ugly block of flats was built on the site. Which Railway Company suggested the Frodingham extension off the Bridlington line that was never built, but did appear on some maps?

Glad you enjoyed! Off the top of my head I think that might have been the North Holderness Light Railway between Beverley and North Frodingham, but I'd have to check.

Haha, no, but you may have missed the bit about George Hudson using his leverage within the Hull and Selby to connect with his other railway venture in Scarborough and Seamer.

@@hullhistorynerd Yes I somehow missed that bit about Hudson coming south from Seamer to Brid. I guess I got confused with your comment at 14:46, "the line reached Bridlington where it terminated". So Hudson's line from the north presumably linked up shortly afterwards then? Oh and great story about the sign at Cottingham station your step-dad nicked! What happened to it...?

@@VVellieMan I've no idea! I suspect one of his kids got it. The original Hull and Selby plan had been to terminate the line at Brid, but Hudson turned that plan into a through station, building on the line from Seamer, so maybe for a few months it was a terminus, it was built from the start as a through station.
