Religion was an ingenious solution to many of mankind's earliest fears and needs. Religion is now implausible to many, but the needs remain. That is the challenge of our times.

While reading these comments, it's quite obvious that the problem is not religion, but instead, close-minded, moral absolutists who wish to impose their ideologies on everyone else. Moral absolutism is not a characteristic that is exclusive to those who embrace religion. It's also embraced by those who embrace nationalism, secularism, patriotism, or any kind of political ideology. Just let people be.

My mother is a deep believer in the Hindu religion. I don't believe in any of it. But when I didn't do well in school and my mother was extremely anxious about my future, she would pray a lot and visit a temple. It's in her nature to worry a lot. After her prayers her despair would be replaced with hope. Even though I'm still not a believer I appreciate what religion has given her. Thank you school of life for this video.

I can totally relate to this. Whenever I get an urge to argue with my mother regarding the irrationality of her beliefs in prayers, I remind my self how it gives her comfort and provides her with meaning. She can't be expected to change her worldviews and abandon her sole source of peace at this point in her life now. I'd rather just let her be happy...

Copernicus and Galileo's theories are like the very painful end of the childhood-of-mankind.** Their discoveries that we are but a tiny forgotten meaningless blue dot in the randomness of space, is akin to a child discovering that his or her parents are in truth, really unimportant in the scheme of things. A new existential terror will echo down the ages from these scientific discoveries we are still dealing with. "

@mjfraser04
@mjfraser04 5 лет назад
@@jasonschneijder2012 That is because the only leg region has to stand IS emotion. There is not evidence, logic, or reason used in believing any religion. Magnulus76 My point was...What other way CAN someone talk about religion other than emotional? Unless the HISTORY of it (religion) is discussed, or it is used as an Aesop’s Fable, in what other context can religion be discussed without using emotion (as the OP tried stated when he tried to sound like a condescending pew ace maker). There is no logic, Reason, Scientific method, or Evidence used in the religion of religious texts. So one must use FAITH. Which what people use to believe something without using any of the above pathways to truth that I listed above. Faith IS by definition...emotional. And most people on the planet are not “intellectuals”. So your last sentence is a fallacy. Meaningless.

This video sums up my life of recent years. I have abandoned 2 years of Computer Science to pursue a degree that acknowledges my interest in religions. I'm beginning this degree very soon, to hear this video is so informative and inspiring. and id like to say that I love and appreciate the work you people put in your videos. Your videos are most definitely having an impact on what I'd like to be in the future. From my experience, religious people are some of the most happiest people I have seen. Ajahn Brahm/RU-vid for example. In my opinion science will never be the answer to happiness and contentment. I believe that either a life of simplicity or a form of religious/philosophical dedication is the answer to contentment and happiness. Religion teaches selflessness, far from science such as technology which has made us more selfish. Technology and science are far from evil though, with the declining interest in religion we just need to find balance with it.

+Ian Ol Read "Shall the religious inherit the world." Its just one of many books that state how secular people have stopped having families and in a result children, So the only youth brought into the world is through religious people. (And migrants which tend to be religious as well.) Europes secularization may be reversed in 30 years, and the children born to religious parents are starting to be more resistant to secular ideals. Maybe through genetics that favor religious tendencys. (Two books that cover genetics and religion include the God Gene, and Evolution of God.)

***** Laughably wrong? What's wrong here is your statement, it doesn't add to this conversation and it's plain ignorant. I can admit I am in favor of religion over science because its my interest/passion. Technically the last two years I was into science, I'm confident in that if I studied it more, I would be bias towards the sciences in my comment. Science vs religion like any debate has two sides and neither side with all its people is ever laughably wrong once they are in the grounds of reason and fact. I have not come near this ground as I can factually back up most of my comment.

Michael Smith That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. Have a few questions. How can genetics favor religious tendency’s though? I always thought religion is either impressed on us or learnt by an individual. Also if religious people are having more children, why is religion on the decline? In Ireland Christianity has decreased by 60% in recent years.

***** Keeping in mind that contentment is one of the highest forms of happiness. Ie drugs can make you temporarily happy, money and possessions are temporary happiness, children and partners isnt all rosy and happy the whole time either. Temporary happiness creates desire and unhappiness. Ive been there like everyone else. Saved for 3 months for an iphone. So unhappy for a while that I didn’t have it, got the iphone eventually. Guess what, It only made me happy for a few hours before I wanted the next thing. Nearly everyone is in this unhappy cycle of desire. If you can escape this desire then, can't you or I be more happy. This is why I said simple life or religion = happiness. Ajahn Brahm, that guy I mentioned, he's a Buddhist monk who has nothing and seems so content and happy. No, you don’t have to be a monk but some form of religious dedication can lead to a happier simpler life. Then again I'm sure that religion hasn't made everyone happy too. But it can be said like the above video that as science has explained a lot, it still isnt a replacement for the consoling effects of religion. These consoling effects in my opinion would be of great comfort to those leading high pressure lives. You are right that science and religion is not happiness, that's a small percentage though. Keep in mind that science creates a lot of this temporary happiness with each release of a new gadget. In your opinion, what does a person need to be happy?

It is not the use of science as a method of inquiry, but when viewed like a religion it's self that I have a problem. This can be doubly troublesome because they won't realize that they are practicing science as a religion. There are plenty of unreasonable people and if its a mob of science fans or a mob of god fans they are equally deluded. This makes me appreciate the beauty of all of the religions in the world, the ideas they have, their similarities and differences, and the community they do to people, the morals they tried to teach to make people as good persons, and the beauty of their traditions, art, culture, etc. I am a Christian Catholic, but I am not religious but kind of spiritual, and I also try to have open mind when discussing religion or dealing with other's religions and ideas, because above all of the ideas I learned as a Catholic is that "I should love my brothers and sisters as I love myself" and it is a hard thing to do, a hard process to perform, a hard challenge to perfect, but still I constantly try to do it. I also kind of practice the good things that other religions do and teaches about morality, how to live a good life, and how to be a good person. I also appreciate the role of religions as social and cultural structures that provides us something that we still look for and struggle as human beings that modern science and technology can't sometimes offer, and the gave people relief, assurance, be at ease, and to continue to live a good life. The only problem with religion for me is how they divide people, how they fight against one another through ideas and their hold on for their faith, the killings they did to people in the past, how some force people to believe in their faith, and how religions teach children to just belief in a strict linear path seriously, to be close-minded to other ideas and beliefs, to have prejudices about other's beliefs, to be intolerant of others in other beliefs, to control the entire life and future of their children, to not respect other's beliefs, and to think that they are the most special human beings and other people are not and that the only way to save ourselves is to strictly believe in our beliefs and to do and save others by forcing them to convert. All social and cultural things we have always have pros and cons with them making them not perfect, whether religion, art, language, technology, etc. There's nothing in this world and in our human existence and culture that only have good side without potentials of being bad, used for evil, or be imperfect. Technology, science, religion, and even society all have their pros and cons, their potentials to be bad, used for evil and immorality, and to always be perfectly imperfect part of our reality, and this is also what religion tries to say, that amidst the imperfections and of not having perfectly good and complete things in our world, there's still that perfect thing that awaits us whether called heaven, afterlife, resurrection, nirvana, moksha, enlightenment, spiritual liberation, freedom from suffering of life, etc. .

This is by far the best comment. I very much agree with every word you say, and this is how/what I believe. I am a Christian. And I believe other religions are so beautiful and the thoughts, ideas, rituals, and experiences they’ve invoked on us. Terrorists no matter what religion do the thing that all religions try to tell us not to do! I’m in my beginning of studying the major 3 religions, and their origins. And no matter what science says, there is something that we can’t see and probably can’t be measured and it’s god. It’s not a “Man in the sky”. God is so much more, “he” is literally everything. And it makes sense that we as humans see god as a human, what else would we see god as? You know, for us to even become humans, and for earth to be bombarded with meteors, and formed in the sun with just the right conditions to form life let alone complex life is amazing. All religions and their goal for the greater good of humanity is beautiful. If we could all love each other and forgive, the world would be a much better place.

@fantasick8880 8 лет назад
+Rahmo Elmi Ok, I think I figured out why your reply is so confusing. You're essentially positing a bad syllogism. "All religion is a way of life" "Buddhism is a way of life" "therefore Buddhism is a religion". This line of thinking doesn't work for many reasons. Most notably the suggestion that religion is solely a way of life or that any "way of life" is somehow religious or that a "philosophy and way of life" can't be detached from religion. All of these suggestions are false. First, religion is not solely a "way of life". It's a complex web of ideas, beliefs, rituals, writings, symbolism, art, architecture etc. Religion is defined in very specific ways. It's not so nebulous as "a way of life". Second, Just because Buddhism (or anything else) is "a way of life", doesn't automatically make it a religion. One could define "a way of life" in many different ways that has nothing to do with religion. Last, I think the distinction between Buddhism's "philosophy and a way of life" and religion is that most Buddhists are atheist. Buddhism isn't about believing in god or gods. The historical Buddha taught that believing in gods was not useful for those seeking enlightenment. That's why most people disqualify Buddhism as a true religion. God belief is the foundational qualifier to define something as a religion. For these reasons, I personally don't consider Buddhism a religion. Like Richard said, it's more a philosophy and way of life.

Even still, I have had to come to terms with what I had lost (whether real or imagined). Today, I believe religion is much like money. It is simply a tool that others will use in what ever way truly reflects their character. If you a good, kind, charitable person, going to church will help you become more of those things. If you are a fearful, judgmental, hateful person, then going to church will also help you there as well.

Nothing matters and nobody cares! That's why people need to help each other and other beings. Because there is nothing "there" at all. So only we are and our surroundings are important. Look around! That's all you (we are) have. Accept it and deal with it. Stop searching for something beyond ourselves. There is nothing more significant except us. And everybody of us is just a part of this planet, born here and will die here. So live your life with joy and dignity, because it's all we have (joy and dignity).

The remarks on Buddha weren't quite correct. His goal isn't to "abandon" suffering or pain of the world through mental practices. In fact, he says the very search for comfort and satisfaction is "WHY" we suffer. We suffer because we want things, because we want a lasting happiness in a world of transient phenomena. Meditation is simply to still the mind, to stay mindful of one's own desire's and thoughts. With enough practice, when the mind abides in its natural state, unswayed, one finds Reality, or in this case Enlightenment. It's very hard to describe this state, because it is not a mental state, or of any state. It is not something conceptual. Reality is not a concept, it isn't something experienced or perceived. It can only described in terms of negation as uncaused, independent, unrelated, undivided, uncomposed, unshakable. Buddhism is quite the most misunderstood religion. It isn't direct and presented. One must analyze, investigate and meditate to understand. It's also best to add in that other ritualistic and deity worshiping addition to Buddhism were created by man for the common lay people to help them. However, they are unnecessary and irrelevant towards gaining Enlightenment, and are not part of what Buddha taught.

The type of Huxlyan atheism presented here was very popular in the 19th century. I think that we should replace religion with philosophy, because it has a scientific approach to the fudimental questions in life. There is no dogmas in philosophy and evetything can be doubted. Philosophy gives you the tools to determine what is right and what is wrong, and in doing that makes you wise and in peace with yourself. Another interesting thing is that christianity, islam and judaism incorporated a lot of ideas from Plato's philosophy. Therefor I state that the reason why christianity seem so appealing and wise is the fact that it uses Plato's philosophical ideas... Literally ( those of you familiar to Plato's philosophy are probably grinning right now).

+Ahmed Zaher yes, philosophy isn't a science, but i didn't argue that it is I just said that it has a scientific approach to things. Philosophy is the mother of science. And that is very clear when you look and compare their methods. Doudt is what a philosopher does, he doubts and then makes an intelectual effort to see whether the theori in question is true. By knowing philosophy you know that in epistemology ( the area of pholosophy that is concerned with knowing) there are two dominant ways of thinking, rationalism and empirism. According to rationalism you can only acquire Knowlage through reason and logic, essentiali by a logical intelectual effort, and then there's empirism that states that the only way of acquiering Knowlage is through very carefull observation. That sort of thinking has the bassis for science. Amongst the most famous empirists are John Locke, David Hume, Francis Bacon( the father of modern science, by modern i mean science from the times of the reinessanse).

Ideally, I would like to be a part of a school of thought that meets the needs that religion has filled throughout human history through the perspective of science and philosophy; a way of approaching the world that uses all that we know to be empirically true and consistent combined with the ability to think critically and accurately about our situation as a vulnerable animal slowly piecing together our part in all of this; something that acknowledges how scary life can often be, and how little control we really have over how we react to these difficulties, but something that also sheds light on the 'normalness' of it all. Religion filled very real needs in the past, and I think it's time it is updated to encompass all that we've learned in the past couple of centuries. In short, a philosophy that uses science, psychology, and art to ease the tensions of a mortal existence. Something that acknowledges the different ways that we see the world and reestablishes connection in the things that all humans have in common. I think we've paid too much time and attention to what separates us. Anyway, seems to me that all religions, at their foundations, are talking about the same thing: the miracle that anything even exists in the first place. Surely it would be much simpler for nothing to exist at all? To me the real problem is when people use such vulnerabilities to push their own agendas. There are problems in our past that need to be learned from and avoided in the future. Perhaps we'll work it out.

Beautifully and eloquently said, and a wonderfully humane response to militant atheism. I'm an atheist myself (& a scientist), but I seem to be a terribly spiritual atheist, who's always recognized that religion is much more than just ignorance and superstition. It's an attempt to satisfy a deep emotional need for meaning and truth beyond ourselves. Religions may come and go, but the religious impulse will always be a part of the best of us.

@Brian Belk at the bottom I found that religion is ultimately biggest business there is and all the resources we dedicate to building huge temples, give large donations (for tax purposes of course) could be directly given to people in need. If religion comforts you from the vast emptiness and no meaning of life feeling when you take outer space into consideration I'm fine with that, but ultimately religion leads to fear and hatred ruling the masses and benefiting the few, so no, religion is maybe the worst sweet poison invented by humans to stop from going crazy in ancient times but it's turned out to be devastating in modern times and we need to change that.

@Brian Belk I wish everyone thought like you but religion is the tool used to create terrorism which satisfies the greed for power and money of few people. So, we just have to deal with the vastness of space and create the meaning of life ourselves instead of believing that some superficial entity wants what's best for everyone (clearly not, and if so there's a high chance we are in a simulation where the controlling entity changes different parameters for fun/study purposes) and that we have a purpose. For your type of religion one can simply practice such thing at home and there would be no need of huge churches, temples, and mosques without disturbing or requiring time of anyone.

Good video. I'm not religious, and I don't have the cash, but if I did, I would have no problems sending my children to Catholic school. I don't mind them learning about Christianity while at the same time receiving, in most cases, a better education than what public schools in the U.S. dish out nowadays.

@silentguy5875 8 лет назад
+Leon612 It's a waste of money, and if you send them there their just end up believing it. So I would just advise you to send them to public school; teach them to write, read, and make them watch some documentaries in their spare time. If you this I think their end up nicely rounded.

you should, us catholics were the first create a school system, and we have really good schools, you don't have to be religious and neither do you're children. There is a possibility that they could be converted, but again they might not.

Wow thanks for that reply. I was just now on another video. Maybe you would like Sam Harris, a friend of Dawkings, and his new book Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality without Religion. I think he makes the important distinction between superstitious/dogmatic religion and more mystical experiential mind training, if I could put it that way, which answers the need for religion and is also compatible with secular atheism (lot of stuff from eastern philosophy, Buddhism, etc) You're right that Richard doesn't talk about alternatives and he doesn't address the worlds religions with much respect (I guess I'm not one to mind but I understand) Again thank you, I was so surprised.

+The School of Life Oh, please. I love your channel, and can even appreciate a dig about Dawkins. I just think it's disingenuous to, on one hand, be so patronizing about religious belief - certain it will die off as an illusion from humanity's childhood; and then go on to imply Dawkins isn't doing anything constructive to fill the void. That's not his job. He is still busy fighting theism. Naturally, Dawkins is unkind in his critiques, because he is motivated by a passion to defend nothing less than evolutionary biology - from disgraceful christian conservative forces whose unfathomable influence has allowed creationism and intelligent design to be taught, together with evolution, in state schools. Dawkins' isn't supposed to be nice. He has way to much to do. And, while the rest of us come up with meaningful ways to live without religion, we ought to thank god for him. ; )
@Archietrex
@Archietrex 8 лет назад
+ellie rain I wouldn't call the video patronising, rather constructive. In fact I'd say childhood to adulthood is a good comparison; clarity perceiving the world increases, along with one's responsibility to navigate life in it alone, without certain hope.

+The School of Life People like him made me and many other young unknowing atheists think it is okay to be an atheist. The option pre-Dawkins was to keep your unbelief to yourself.He made atheists feel like they are not alone and should not remain in the closet. Other people like Daniel Dennet worry about the question of community post-religion, an equally important question. But Dawkins should not be beaten down for not focusing on that question, his contribution is indeed significant in making atheism seem normal in society and in demanding political respect for non-religious people.

Caseius Tea no, i agree with you - and that's a lovely way to put it, and what comes next, how we face life; though i do think it's simplistic to think of religion as something you just grow out of. religion and the concept of God is also deeply genetic (denial of mortality, if you will). and concepts of God are far more vast than most secular people realize. for instance, the whole reason Yawhen/Jehovah gets that name is its incomprehensible (you can't pronounce it in Hebrew), unknowable, ineffable, etc. as you can tell, i LOVE Dawkins. wrote a paper on him. idolize him. but he doesn't get it, either. we CAN'T understand or know everything, no matter how far science advances. there are paradoxes of existence that are simply impossible for the human brain to make logical sense out of. (for instance, Xeno's paradox related to time, what's called the mathematical "proof" of god. the fact that if time goes back endlessly as we imagine -because what comes before the beginning if there's a beginning, the other alternative - if time keeps going, we could never get here. that kind of thing. doesn't compute. so that's the stuff we call God. or that feeling of faith and significance of patterns in one's life - that is built-in. we DO find ways of coping with what we don't know, as you say. and largely, they are STILL arguably religious in a sense. believing things will work out. believing life has meaning though it has no objective meaning, believing in our own importance, etc. i'm with these guys. just adding a critique.

Why on earth would you be afraid of death? You've been dead for longer than you've been alive.
@Ancor3
@Ancor3 8 лет назад
I doubt religion originally had the intention of helping people cope with death. Many religions had no notion of a (rewarding) afterlife. The ancient Greeks, for instance, didn't believe in a reward after death. The Greeks believed in an underworld where every person went to. The stories about the underworld are generally unpleasant, oftenly filled with people lamenting their previous decisions and at worst about people going through cruel punishments. Only the most exceptional went to a better place (Elysium). Even the Judeo-Christian religions didn't start out with the notion of a rewarding afterlife. The oldest manuscripts contain no notion of heaven or hell, those were added in with the New Testament. Judaism till this day has no official notion of an afterlife. The Torah does have some vague description of a hell (Sheol, it's like a region of darkness/nothingness), but other verses state that *everyone* goes there after death. I think that the notion of an afterlife was invented as a method to keep people from engaging in immoral behavior. The idea is that you have an authority figure that is always watching you and capable of punishing you after you die (because he sure isn't going to do it immediately).

it really depends on your definition of "religion", which has traditionally been used to control the masses. people need to find their own connection with "all that is" if they want to find purpose for their life and acceptance of their eventual death. institutions become corrupted, dogma becomes inflexible, people believe what they're told to believe, not what they feel. we don't need religion.... we need acknowledgement of our personal connection to..... everything that exists.
@user-ez8nq7br7h

Why people tend to say that their religion is right and the rest are not. If we have this thought, we automatically disgrace our oun faith. Because God through thousands of years sends prophets to guide humanity. So that we learn to love, and so on. We cannot say that other religion are wrong as they are all from not other but God. It is called "progressive revelation" in all religions, the spiritual aspect are the same, only the social aspect changes. Because the world is also progressing and not staying still.

I noticed that. Some people still do. It seems like such a small god to me. No offense intended. I'm very religious at this point in my life. I have chosen my god carefully as it reflects who I am and where my life is headed. Whether it's real or a delusion does not matter to me. How I live my life and the kind of person I strive to be matters to me. That is very real. Freedom of religion, or not to believe, is very important for individual happiness and justice and stability of society.
