Philippe de Montebello is such a knowledgeable man, and is a real pleasure to listen to. I learned a great deal from this video.

Knowledgeable? The reason why the impressionist painted outside was because of the developments of the Chisel Paintbrush, The metal Tube to store paints, the new pigments available and the new portable easel. Not that nonsense Montebello rambled about

Thank you so much Philippe de Montebello! This tour was lovely and informative. And your work with the museum is itself a national treasure. You've not only inspired me to re-examine familiar paintings, but to incorporate art history into my everyday life.

they went out because in 1841 first paint tubes were invented, and it was now easier to paint outside, than before when you had to make all your paints by mixing pigments in your atelier.

The director of this film obviously felt that watching the two gentlemen was more important than viewing the paintings.

Philippe de Montebello seems to know so much about the history of the paintings he really has to restrain himself not to try to tell everything at once and turn it into an overly exited ramble showering informational details but to keep the sentences in a logical succession :D

Wish the camera lingered on the art and not the sales people.

We feel very strongly about the proper context of works of art, we have a responsibility to the truth. We feel very strongly that works of art is the greatest manifestation of the creative Mankind, at its highest level of its perception and vision. It should have a context that is serious, that is accurate and scholarly. Director of the Museum of Metropolitan Art, Philippe de Montebello "Origins of Impressionism." (1994) I tend to agree!

Montebello

I wonder who owns the 1870 still life Paul Cezanne was surely slightly obsessed by Jan Davidsz de Heem with the lemon and centered pole and was along with say William Turner as such quite likely "silky, velvety mint creme cloth"-original cause for departure from tedious realism into art as typically defined by people today he likely painted the individual items separately causing abstract perception through conflicting realism lol

I love the subject but please let the camera focus on the pIntings - not on the two men talking. Its much better to take a long look at the paintings while they talk ... 🙏

Phil is wasting his time explaining a masterpiece to a mind like Rose's. Still I love hearing Phil.
