The history of iTunes is full of excitement, disappointment, and even some controversy that all began in 2001. Now at that time, the iPod didn’t exist and playing music from CDs was standard. There were MP3 players, but the industry was still in its infancy and wouldn’t explode until a few years after the iPod was released. Most computers were capable of importing songs from CDs and this created a problem with managing those song files effectively.
The most popular desktop music managers were Real Jukebox, Windows Media Player, and Music Match. The problem with these applications was that they were not only unappealing and complicated, but they throttled things like encode quality and CD burning speed to encourage users to pay for the software’s pro version. Apple capitalized on these shortcomings by introducing a free, simple, and powerful digital music jukebox called iTunes.

There were cd-mp3 players before anything you've mentioned and you haven't mentioned WINAMP which soundjam is clearly a ripoff of? Problems with managing files? Everything except Itunes and Ipods could play music by folder whiich is why they sucked from the beginning.. Apple IS for idiots, bruv. sorry.

I love the idea of owning your music 100%, which is why I'm not too crazy about streaming services that require you to have an account with them. In a way, Apple Music and Spotify let you BORROW the music rather than OWN it. It'll be a sad day when buying and owning music from the iTunes store will no longer be a thing.
@Taajwur

People still want to own music. Me personally I don’t want to shell out money every month to keep listening to my music and if I miss a month I just lose it all. People should still have the option to buy.

It's just unrealistic to buy all the music you want to listen to regularly. In my iTunes Library I have 475 songs. Which would be ~$475. Instead I've owned Apple Music for 1 year(I only got it a year ago), and spent 60 bucks. This is completely ignoring all the songs I listened to that I didn't add to my library. For the same amount of money every month I can listen to about 30 minutes of unique music(If I buy them), or unlimited with Apple Music. This is all my opinion
@Equilion

In my iTunes library I have 12.369 Songs! And I own every single one of them, either from my old CDs or bought in the Music-Store. And I want it to stay that way. I want to own my music, net- and subscription independent. Period.

Lorin H true but once you pay for it, you own it, it's yours... although Apple Music is great, you miss a subscription payment (whether on purpose or through no fault of your own) it's gone, a company/label/artist doesn't want their music on the platform, it's gone. There is music that I purchased from iTunes Store that is no longer available to purchase, download or stream but bc i purchased it, its mine, it's on my computer, it's on my iCloud, etc. It makes sense financially to pay $100/year but it also makes sense to have a physical copy of music that you own and can access no matter what. It can take one failed business negotiation to erase a huge portion of music from a digital library. I don't think people realize how many of their favorite artists are connected to a company and how that company and not the artist controls how their work is distributed and how easily those rights can change hands. And there's no telling how many times I've forgotten to download copies for offline play and then my internet goes out and the only music i can play is what's already synced on my phone.

There is no way iTunes Store be discontinued anytime soon. Many people need to buy music and not stream it. For example DJs need to have the song files of their music, in order for them to use them with other software (or hardware). Apple will never discontinue iTunes, unless Apple Music starts to integrate with other music software(e.g. Virtual Dj) by sharing music files
@pokepress

filippos Kat I also need to be able to own music for use on my radio program, so there needs to be some outlet for that on my end.
@DylanM15

Most DJ technology/software can ask for access to stuff like Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, etc and use content directly from there on your devices. You can download stuff locally with those services too so it's not being just streamed but instantly available locally.

The most striking difference iTunes made (in my view) is that it departed from being just a music player, to being a music jukebox with its built in library where you can easily find a song or create a playlist. No longer did you have to use your file system as your library.

Shutting down iTunes would be really stupid. Some people don’t want a streaming service and just want to buy the songs. If it’s making profit there’s no point of killing it. Apple Music is really good tho

Angel Hernandez You’re in the Stone Age, bud. Even you’d admit that Apple Music is good, like most streaming services, and Apple needs to adapt to that business model. Out with the old, in with the new. Sometimes, when it comes to technology, you have to compromise.
@the7311
@the7311 6 лет назад
Austin Kyle i have Apple Music and I love it but if it isn’t costing them much to support iTunes and it makes profit there’s no point of killing something that profitable. It’s not like it hurts or slows down the improvement of Apple Music. There’s a lot you can’t do with Apple Music like being able to use the music for your DJ equipment. (I’m not a dj). With iTunes you own the music with Apple Music you lease the music. I’m not in the Stone Age. I stopped using CD’s years ago when Apple killed that. I use airpods instead of aux I don’t use usb 2 or 3 that often only C. I wirelessly charge my iPhone when I go to bed and in my car. I see why Apple moves forward in a lot of ways but I can also see why iTunes is too valuable to kill. Now Apple gives a choice buy the songs or lease them it’s simple.

iTunes has to Live!!! I buy my favorite music and stream to find new music. When available, I prefer vinyls and then having a digital version of that album. This is really important to me, especially when I was on a limited data plan where Streaming was simply irresponsible. Now that’s not to say I don’t stream with WiFi or a hardwired connection! I’ve streamed from Last.FM to Pandora to my new current favorite Spotify! However, Cellular Coverage is not 100% guaranteed! Especially in the mountains, in a Plane or on a Boat! This is where LOCAL MUSIC WINS! Every Time. Besides, if Apple was to close down the Legendary iTunes Store... that would just open up the floodgates for Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to swoop in and Cashout!

Even before iTunes existed, I do remember that Microsoft released Windows Media Player 7 back in 2000 with Windows ME which was one of the first software capable of not only CD audio playback, but also converting an audio cd to mp3 files on your PC so that you can listen to your music without having to hunt down your CD and insert it every time because it would be stored on your hard drive.

For me, iTunes Store is very important, for example, in Japan are a lot of artists that only publish their albums for purchase option (no Streaming available) and the only way to add these music to my library is purchasing (or matching with iTunes Match). This case is repeated in Western too, like some videogames Soundtracks that are only available to purchase.

Thank you. You have done a remarkable job putting all this together. Apple have always been a massive player in the music industry, and while there has been ups and downs, I have always enjoyed what they had to offer, and still do. Modern iTunes could probably be well served by a little more decluttering and possibly a separation of some functionality into separate apps e.g. iOS device syncing and Podcasts, however, I still find iTunes to be clean, easy to use and mostly intuitive. I am also a proud user of Apple Music.

I don't think the iTunes music store will be discontinued. Too many people like to fully own their music. Not just have access because of the subscription. If you are on Apple Music then cancel you simply lose all your music that was added with Apple Music. While with the iTunes store you can fully purchase those songs and keep ahold of them even after a subscription is cancelled or restarted several times.

Streaming is nice and all, but if i have to pay for something, I’d rather pay once for a copy that i can play on anything I want, and not need internet for. It just feels like you don’t really “own” whatever you stream, and personally I prefer actually owning something rather than renting something.
@Jzombi301
@Jzombi301 5 лет назад
Ꮆ0ͮͩͦ̑D̶L̶e̶ᎦᎦ I agree 100% but with basically all streaming services now including Apple Music you can download the songs to your phone so you never have to go online except to search for a new song. But that’s the same for iTunes anyway. I recently started paying for Apple Music and it is very much worth it for me because there are so many songs that I wanted but couldn’t get cuz I didn’t have the money but now I can get as many songs as I want. I used to think like you. I still do buy the songs that I like the most just to feel like I actually own it instead of renting it like you said but Apple Music has changed the way I listen to music for the better I recommend you try the free 3 month trial and see if you like it. You can cancel it any time during the trial and it will still let you get the remaining months if you don’t like it. Or you could just ignore everything I said and keep doing what ur doing 👍 (Sorry for the long comment)

A brilliant video, the only disagreement I have is "as long as customers are buying, it wouldn't make much sense to shut it down". If purchases keep declining, who knows when the store will start to lose Apple money. The store offers music (evolved into Apple Music), movies/TV (streaming is becoming the user norm) and music videos (who buys those any more?). Perhaps the iTunes Store will evolve similar to Apple Music, but once it starts losing money it will surely close.

Personally I’ve found the digital music transition to be a mixed bag in terms of availability. On one hand, I’ve been able to pick up things that would otherwise be very difficult to get, but also as someone who focuses on international artists and soundtracks, a lot of stuff got left behind. Then there’s 2009 when iTunes removed the ability to buy songs that had only been provided in DRMed form, and a bunch of stuff got lost.

I'm a PC user who used WinAMP starting 1998. Finally switching to iTunes in 2007 remains one of my biggest decisions in terms of digital change. Although iTunes was, and still is, very bloated, it has features that I like and can no longer imagine not having, such as play count. These days, I'm an Android user, but have an iPhone SE I carry with me and an iPod Nano connected to my car so I can enjoy music. I have music subscriptions at all times - I switch between services such as Spotify, Google Play, Apple Music, and TIDAL - but continue to purchase mp3 files from iTunes and Amazon several times a month.

Simple solution: there are still many people out there (albeit slowly becoming a niche market) who still own non-iOS iPods. Keep iTunes, and the iTunes Store (with music, movie, and show purchases) for those that need it; split Apple Music into a dedicated app. From there, all Apple really needs to do is provide a local library for user purchased music and the rest in iCloud for Apple Music. Seeing that the Mac will have its own TV app later this year, along with the possibility of its own Podcasts app, frankly iTunes could be simplified and de-bloated even further.

IDK how I feel about the rumors of the iTunes Store being discontinued... I definitely still buy music. However going back to CD's isn't exactly an option either since they too are waning in popularity and are likely to be discontinued themselves and since the majority, if not all, computers already do not include a CD drive you're not left with to many options unless you buy an external SuperDrive, but that's a hassle most will eventually get sick of... On the flip side, streaming does give you access to more music and will probably save you money in the long run... However, what if an artist decides to pull a Taylor Swift and pull their music from their servers and the user cannot listen to their music as a result? I think the best way would be to include a buy-in option for users. Like if you like a song or album they should give you the option to buy it at a discount price or something, that way it is saved it to your iCloud account. Either way going digital is inevitable, it's future.

I hate iTunes right now for the fact that I need to scroll for literally several minutes to get to the final episode in a 3 season tv series, large files of other shows with large numbers of episodes, or a large music album. Also they need to keep the iTunes Store alive. It’s part of iTunes and is what makes it easy to get songs, shows, digital books, and whatever else you want from the music library application.

I hate subscription fees. Try to avoid them at all costs. There's something just so satisfying about having hard copies of all my music saved on my computer. Apple could completely disappear, and I'd still have my files.

I like to be able to own my music. Yes streaming is the future but you should still have the option to purchase an album to own. With streaming if you don't pay your subscription or you have no internet you are screwed. People are entitled to their opinion and all but think about the consequences of only being able to stream music even though I doubt that will happen any way. Owning beats paying a lease fee for and eternity. It's actually cheaper just to buy an album/songs you like unless you listen to an insane amount of music. It's either pay forever or pay a one time fee and own it. Don't let big business capitalize because they will with everyones go with the flow mentality.

Working in the cell phone industry, you see a lot of different uses for different things. iTunes Store is no longer the popping 'sam goody' back in the 90s. However, iTunes store does cater to DJs and young teens that don't have to convince of live streaming music whenever they want. A lot of families out there share data, which results to high school and college students need to hunt down wifi to do anything on the phone or computer. So with the money they saved up from working their part-time job, they still purchase their favorite music. Maybe later in 2030, when 5G has a solid fountain, iTunes Store with dig it's own grave and close. When unlimited data doesn't cost a fortune and people have the ability to stream where ever they want without sharing any compromise. Until iTunes Store will be the millennial go-to for music to play which they are in school and until DJs fine a cost effective alternative to own music, iTunes Store will still have a pulse.

Is Apple Music really supposed to surpass Spotify this summer? Doesn’t Spotify have like four times the subscribers or something like that?

Streaming is like renting houses. Instead of owning the music and playing whenever we want, once net is dead or sub is terminated, music is gone. Still love to buy the music but streaming is excellent for discovering. Plus, buying CD is pretty much the most effective way to enjoy Japanese music.

I still don't understand the point of streaming apps. I'd rather own my music.

iTunes > Spotify, Tidal, Apple music and any streaming services. Real game changer for music industry after the limewire/napster controversy for sure Owning music file is better than just keep the stream music, on streaming app that could be gone anytime when the label decided to removed them when the licensed expire, even after you download them offline in your app. In iTunes, we keep them forever after purchased as it was very mp3 file focus as well.

I remember my dad yelling at my sister because she got the family computer a virus from live wire or lime wire? What ever it’s called.

I think Apple should make the iTunes Store into an Apple Music app on MacOS. Have it work like iTunes, but then also have an area on the screen that allows you to purchase the song or album from iTunes Store. So it’s less bloated, puts iTunes on the back burner, but still allows people to import purchased music onto devices and lets users purchase music through Apple Music.
