iTunes was once the most popular place to browse, buy, and listen to music. But that was about 15 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. In fact, many people today consider iTunes to be a bloated, slow, bug-infested application that’s become the victim of its own success. So what exactly happened to iTunes? Well, in order to answer this question, we have to go back to before iTunes ever existed. Before the iTunes Music Store was around, major record labels were having a huge problem with piracy. People were ripping music from CDs and sharing digital song files to every corner of the globe by using peer-to-peer file sharing applications like Napster. But most people weren’t pirating music because they were criminals, they were pirating music because there was no other way to download digital song files in those days. There was no digital music marketplace. If you wanted the latest single from Eminem or Beyonce, you’d have to make a trip to your local record store and spend fifteen or twenty dollars to buy the entire album. Even if that single was the only song you wanted. So you can imagine the appeal of hopping on Napster and downloading individual songs for free from the comfort of your own home, even if it was technically illegal. And because things like the internet and the iPod grew in popularity so quickly, so did digital music piracy, and it caught record labels off guard.
Their initial approach to combat piracy was to make examples out of the worst file-sharers. They did this by taking legal action and threatening the same treatment to any other pirate. But this warning fell on deaf ears since it just wasn’t possible to prosecute hundreds of thousands of Napster users. So then they got another idea, what if music could be copy-protected so that it wouldn’t be possible to rip CDs in the first place? But before the music industry could follow through with that plan, they were approached by Steve Jobs, who introduced a completely new way to combat music piracy. The concept was that you can’t stop people from pirating music, but you can discourage it by offering an easier, more convenient way to find and download digital music at a reasonable price.

I never backup my phone to iCloud so I use iTunes, but when I want to sync like 1 song to my phone it backs up automatically, when I click the don’t backup button thingy on the top, it does nothing, it takes awhile to do something, but most times it still backs up. Usually I would spam it but after it cancels the backup, most times it would cancel and then cancel the sync. They should add a button to disable automatic backup.

I use Spotify and Apple Music’s biggest lack is syncing music that’s playing between devices. With Spotify I can have AirPods on my iPad, then if I’m getting up to have a smoke I connect them to my phone, and it’s playing the same song at the same time. Also using my phone to control my playlist on my PC. Surprised Apple hasn’t done that since everything else they do is so in sync between devices.

The problem with iTunes, it’s all about the INTERFACE. The reason it’s so slow and sluggish, it’s because it is downloading a lot of crap you don’t need , Hi-Rez visuals, videos et cetera. All embedded within an interface which comes across like Walmart or a secondhand car is showroom. The simple functionality of the early iTunes, when your tracks and songs and playlists were all embedded with it in a simple hierarchical menu structure- when they abandoned that they lost the plot.

"Lossless tracks in the iTunes store" Do you wanna try again?
@gedkennedy8059
@gedkennedy8059 5 лет назад
JonnyInfinite - Apple really failed in that respect and continue to do so. I’ve probably never spent in total more than £50 on music from iTunes in the past 15 years, always preferring to buy and rip lossless. In the 3 months since last December I’ve spent more than 10 times that amount on 3 or 4 online digital stores that specialise in High Resolution music, offering 16 bit lossless CD quality as the MINIMUM available quality when Hi-Res isn’t available. One of my favourite bands recently reissued their entire remastered back catalogue on vinyl - but not CD. The albums are available on iTunes at 14.99 (256kbps AAC) as well as at least 2 online stores that specialise in lossless, in CD quality for under 13.99. For me - that’s a no-brainer.

@Shivang P Swain I bought quite a bit from Onkyo to begin with (a version of 7Digital, I think) after seeing the ludicrous prices on HD Tracks and shopping around. I use Onkyo as a last resort now, although reasonably priced with a good catalogue, I now prefer HiResAudio.com as they have more discounts, sales and give you loyalty points worth actual cash with every album purchase. I’ll be taking out a 1 Year Qobuz Sublime membership in the next week or two. It’s a whopping £300 a year for Hi-Res streaming access to their entire catalogue but you get massive discounts on everything if you want to buy an album. On average, a 24/96/-24/192 album that would normally be £15 is discounted to under £10, £35 deluxe editions are sold at about £20, some expensive super deluxe collections are discounted by as much as 60%. So, in future I’ll be comparing Qobuz after member discount with HiResAudio for buying albums and using Onkyo as a last resort for anything the others don’t have. (HiResAudio don’t sell anything below 24 bit, so they do have less choice. Just beware of the choice between regular 24/96 FLAC and MQA FLAC. I mistakenly bought an MQA album from them a few weeks ago thinking it would be future proof, only to find the tracks were 24/44.1 and not 24/96 - I don’t have an MQA hardware DAC add on - yet, so I’m not getting the higher sample rate on that one album - expensive learning curve!) I recently bought the Audivana plus player for Mac, it’s better than using iTunes for playback at home and can handle any audio format and resolution. It’s far from perfect and a damned ugly interface, but I’m still getting used to using it. Hope that helps, sorry for long, rambling reply.

iPod didn’t work online. It also didn’t come with a built in speaker. But it certainly performs better than any iPhone or iPad that I know despite not having a touch screen. In fact I had it tested back to back using a Bluetooth adapter for iPod and the sound quality from the iPod was better. How?? On top of which iPod’s OS is so simple that I can play back any playlist (or playlist folder) shuffle it by album or artist or song, AND it will shuffle THE WHOLE PLAYLIST! (Your confirmation of that showed on the screen as you shuffled it: 1/(out of) 1539. iOS stops you after 100 songs, while iTunes seems to stop after 20 (confirmed that with a tech support agent) Why can’t I have that functionality that iPod was so good at?

I am basically a PC user as I have 4 Windows 10 PC's and a Window 10 tablet. Until recently, when I recover personal data on a failed 7 year old iMac I was given it, I the only Apple device I have is an 200 gig (yes I know I replaced the hard drive inside as the 160 gig drive failed) iPod Classic. IMHO, the only thing that Apple did right was the iPod Classic. I am going to keep keep it running as long as possible. I find the space issue on the iPod Touch unacceptable and full of bloatware. When one has 2 terabytes of music all backed up in multiple places, both locally and in the cloud. On my main computer I haven't upated iTunes since version 10.7 as that was the last version that contain a feature that I use the most other than syncing music with my iPod is iTunes DJ. Since the death of Steve Jobs, Apple has lost all innovation. The latest version of the iPhone is only playing catch up with its competitors.

Well, I had an experience a couple of months ago on a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" running OS X Mavericks, where there was a group of people from my local Anglican church who wanted to dance to some music stored on a CD. One of the women had already put the CD into the optical drive of that machine, but it didn't seem to read it. I had to help them out. Fortunately, I already knew that 2011 13" Macbook Pros have an ODD eject button, so I pressed it and the CD came right out. I pushed the CD back in and the women opened iTunes. By the time the ripping was done, the woman had gone, so I decided to remove the CD since it was not needed anymore. However, I didn't know where the CD case was, so for safekeeping, I put the CD back into the drive. Much to my surprise, iTunes started ripping the CD again, even though the whole CD had already been ripped. Is that a bug in iTunes?

Now it's a mess and many of the features I liked in old iTunes is no longer available: For example, the ability to shuffle a playlist and then SAVE that shuffled playlist. I got so sick of iTunes, missing artwork, and having to do storage management on my iPhone via music playlists as there is no MicroSD slot on iPhones to hold all of my Music. I've been using iTunes ever since I was a kid for organizing and listening to music, and am still stuck with it as I am on Windows with an iPhone and iPad. My dad has had several problems, and I've heard lots of complaints, but with my basic use to just play stored music and change its information, and occasionally sync my devices, it's actually pretty great. Does that stuff very fast with zero issues. I, of course, am not using it for much more. Going to the iTunes store to purchase music sucks though, it's super slow. Doesn't support biometrics for payments anyways so I just use my iPad and iPhone for that since they run the store so much better.

When the tablets in general first came out, they seemed pointless to me, possibly because I'm a software engineer and am therefore basically always on my laptop, and I have a phone if I want something even more portable than that. But then I observed one of my artist friends and realized that tablets fit the digital art use case perfectly. Didn't even occur to me at first, probably because I can barely manage drawing a decent flower. Actually I did draw a recognizable Goku one time by copying someone else. Pretty sure that was my peak.

@Bobby Brady Typical American response. Just because it happens in the US doesn't always mean the rest of the world will follow. The last time I checked, the rest of the world was still bigger than the US of A (except for maybe your ego's). Here are some facts: Worldwide, as of Q4, 2018, Spotify has almost twice as much PAYING subscribers (96 million) compared to Apple Music's paying and trial users combined (56 million). In total Spotify has 207 million active users. And I'm not saying it can't happen, but saying it will happen cause it happens in the US is actually the same as "everyone in Sweden uses Spotify".
