as someone whose first language is definitely not english, i watched this video approximately 7 years ago for the first time and barely understood anything due to the overall adhd kinda vibe. rewatching the video now got me thinking about how dramatically my english has improved over the years as i am not only able to get what bill was saying but even catch each word individually. wow. kinda proud of myself.
I love how besides how much quickness, memes and goofiness over the explanation in this video, the nuclear explosion ( 8:25) felt so much sorrow and had more psychological weight than the rest of the video. Absolutely 10/10
But you know what had more psychological weight? All the horrible stuff the Japanese did to the Chinese. I’d they deserved the nuke, and two nukes weren’t enough.
They weren’t fighting to be the emperor. They were fighting to be the Shogun which held the real power in Japan. The Emperor is just a political figurehead that exists to legitimize that power.

WW2 Japanese soldiers were crazy and brutal, They were determined to fight to the very end especially towards late in the war and American soldiers and marines became hardcore veterans facing the Japanese Army on islands like Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima & Okinawa to name a few.
My history teacher once described World War I as "If you punch me in the face, all my friends are gonna beat you up, which means all YOUR friends are gonna beat THEM up" and I feel like 6:20 really captures that same feeling
Karl Wilker Ye and those winds were called the kamikaze. Kami- means god and kaze means wind. So they thought it was the winds that the Japanese gods sent to protect Japan
i havent seen this video for years but for some reason i just randomly wanted to watch it. the atomic bomb drop always kinda gives me chills. the tone of this video isnt meant to be serious but ive always liked that that moment is given the gravitas that it deserves. anyway, this took me back and it still holds up
Reminded me of the Brits vs. China. 'Trade with us or else'. The clan of savage capitalists been digging their grave for a long time. Now the big red monster they created is about to eat them and half the world is cheering. And I'm like: Uhm... monster!
This is how school learning should be! You'd be amazed at how quickly kids can learn things when they are entertained by it. Also, I loved the way it ends with the graph.
*a family member is dead* *people are sobbing uncontrollably* *some guy is happily oversimplifying world conquest and international alliances with a bunch of short cheerful jingles* best funeral
Rewatching this and the world history and having an incredible new appreciation for your work Bill after watching your interview with Anthony. Looking forward to what flows out of your brain next for us all
hail ya bud the only bad part is that this was uploaded the day of our test on Japan. WHY IRONY??!!?!!! well it wouldn't work anywayz cuz this has lots a cursingggg
Trying to learn about classical Japanese politics for a class. this didn't really help me figure out what I meant to because I intended to learn about japan between 750-1200, but still v helpful! Love your videos bill!
@@CounterCurseMantraJust because someone is speaking japanese, you would ask them their opinion on the atrocities committed by imperial Japan? Have some self-awareness. You're speaking ENGLISH. Do you have any idea how much suffering, exploitation, oppression and outright genocide English speakers have caused? America, Britain, Australia, Canada, all of these countries have their own long, long list of crimes against humanity. The British and American empires especially, their sheer power means they are likely the biggest non-natural causes of suffering in human history. *All* governments minimize and erase the uncomfortable parts of their own history that's taught in schools. You should never think your government is any different.
@@CounterCurseMantra wait, i recognize this hostility to reading... that's an american, alright! what are you doing on youtube? get back to your 14h shift in the Hamburger McMines™, or the Pinkertons™ will capture you and send you off in an Amazon™ package to fight in one of the ExxonMobil Army™'s many invasions of the middle east!
i cant believe i'm saying this but i'm half japanese and jus recently moved back to japan and this made me understand japanese history enough to also understand the culture. thank you man!
Because of the context. Because Western technology was so far advanced, and the USA was so much more powerful even in 1854 compared to Japan that the leaders knew it was play ball or be blown to smithereens and still have to do as they say anyway.
@@crispinjulius5032 usa technology is basically some shit they copied from Britain and Britain's technology is some shit they copied from chinese ( gunpoweders , bombs , compass etc ) and Chinese technology is some shit they formed in alliance with India (cholas to be accurate )and Indias shit is from the mathematicians and engineers who were forced to work for the kings because of the caste system which forced one group to be using the brain ( brahmins ) one group as warriors followed by workers last slaves , but the irony is warriors forced the brahmins to advance the empire scientifically , Tamils created the wootz steel which were indeed used by Iranians to invade north India but still the south people didnt got invaded ( there are some temples that were looted by no one , padhmanadhar temple has gold and diamonds worth 1 trillion USD, which is 1/3 Indian economy, imagine all the Indian temples non looted .
The Potato of Fire I'd love to like your comment, but I can't, cause it's at 666 likes, and I can't upset our lord and savior satan, or upset the meme balance...
I used that audio clip while playing Civ V with friends once. I was Babylon, and far more technologically advanced than everyone else, so I started taking over everywhere even though we had agreed on not going to war. "please don't kill us man" "how about I do *anyway*"
I love the chiming style of narration in this video. "Japan is told to not take over" Japan says "how about I dooooooo" I literally laughed out loud and I am smiling for real.

This video is going viral on Japanese Twitter now. A lot of Japanese understood it was really good to study Japanese history. Twitterでプチバズりしてたので見にきました。 細かいところが違うという指摘のコメントもありましたが、私自身が歴史を完璧に覚えているわけではないし、大まかに捉えるには非常に分かりやすかったです。
This video have been up and watched dozens of mil times, so too his other video. It's just the japanese who were pathetic about learning modern history.
man i remember when this was new and youtube had the function of little pop-up notes in the video, like when he said tornado and the note said "actually a typhoon"
It wuld be hilarious if this was History of the World and the last 10 seconds was "and in other countries stuff was also happening, but it wasn't as cool"
