Did you know that when it first launched, the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! card game didn't require tributes? Or that the first movie premiered alongside the first Digimon Adventure film? Let's do a deep dive back into the origins of Yu-Gi-Oh!, from the original manga to Bandai's TCG, Konami's video games, and ultimately the Official Card Game--and some stuff you've never heard of along the way.

I personally think what made yugioh so successful was a combination of luck, storytelling, and a corporation. Luck and corporation being the most obvious, people still have a fondness for the manga and anime, to now the abridge series is a part of the cultural zeitgeist. This also explains why there are so many toy cartoons because they are just glorified marketing

Oh wow I had no idea that the "official" rules were ever a thing, I had always thought the "expert" rules were something that Kazuki came up with to make the card game function more as an actual game that real people would play, and because he wasn't a game designer is the reason why they seemed off, take 2 tribute monsters for example, the amount of resources needed to summon them is crazy, I guess in the very early day Blue Eyes still saw some play cuz of the scarce removal, but needing to commit 3 theoretical normal summons over the course of 3 turns and go -2 in card advantage just to play a big beat stick has always seemed silly to me, like there definitely could've been a smoother way to amp up into your big monsters, I think Synchros actually cracked the code in a lot of ways, you saw plenty of vanilla Synchros seeing play in the early days of 5Ds cuz ramping up into Synchros was so much smoother, well that and they wouldn't have to brick in your hand.
@IC-23
@IC-23 2 года назад
Big monarchs also do a decent job without the extra deck since while you still invest 2 monsters keeping a big monster on the field is much easier than keeping 2 small monsters alive. If Lv7+ monsters could use 2 monsters or 1 Lv5 or higher for their summon they'd still be bad but nowhere near as bad as it is now.
@ItsPForPea

@@IC-23 I agree, either that or separate tribute summon from normal summon so that you can still tribute after you normal summoned. Or both really

@Maniax Channel: I don't know if it was you talking, if it was you forgot to mention when sword of reveling light was a lingering effect cannot attack for 3 turn, it only effect the one currently on the field, like you see in the first episode yugioh duel monster, when Kaibai summoned the 3rd blue-eyes white dragon, and was still able to attack when the other 2 blue-eyes white dragon where effected by sword of revealing light.

I've really loved these videos. I mostly play Vanguard these days, but always keep up with Yugioh. When I was younger I never understood why the rules were so different in Duelist Kingdom, and then they were changed to be more like the card game in Battle City. Interesting that a lot of the duelist kingdom style gameplay comes from those first games, and also those "official" rules. I played the Sacred Cards when I was younger a lot, and I guess they were using some sort of similar engine for all of those games from the first one in Japan, which is why that game also didn't really play too much like the card game. Really appreciate all the hard work on this!

@@a75431a tbf he has talked about non-japanese things before and the history of mtg is not something most non-mtg or even most mtg players in general know. A majority of MTG's fan base is casual and is pretty big. There's a lot of good reasons to make a video on it. Even if he only takes about from Japan's view, it'd see be worth to see since even less people know how it came to be in japan
@TheShinyFeraligatr
@TheShinyFeraligatr 3 года назад
No. This is the history of Japanese TCGs. As he admitted back when, while Magic was an inspiration for multiple games, it didn't have actual major market penetration in Japan on a major scale until like three years ago... when they incentivized Westerners to buy Japanese product. So it's not a part of a "big 3" over there.
@astrograph7875
@astrograph7875 3 года назад
@@TheShinyFeraligatr It doesn't mean he can't do a side video of the history of mtg whether it be in the states or in japan. Also Magic also started finding its popularity in japan in the late nineties and only grew since then. It had a decent impact on the OCG market at the time and still has with japan to this day with mtg being between the 4th or 5th most popular card game there

This was nice to watch, think a couple of the rules from the "official" one could be wrong and I've been trying for a few years now to get one of the first rulebooks to see what the rules actually are. Like how Remove Trap and De-Spell says that they destroy 1 trap card and not specify face up and the same for De-Spell.

Takehashi spent most of his life drawing manga that never got popular, and even Yu-Gi-Oh! while initially had a following, wasn't the juggernaut it became until his chapter with the card game and Kaiba. I honestly don't blame him at all. He FINALLY got a huge positive reception to his work, with readers mailing him questions about where they can buy the cards and how to play it. The man realized he had an opportunity to be successful and wisely decided to just go for it. If people want the card game, so be it. I think the reason none of the Yu-Gi-Oh! knock offs have ever reached those heights of success is because he never INTENDED his manga to be an extended commercial for merchandise, so it was written like an actual manga with likable characters and a deep lore about ancient Egyptian magic. I doubt any knock off would bother putting that much effort into the story tbh
@genyakozlov1316

No, the moral of the story is that marketing is more important for success than quality. Quality is needed to make those who came to your product stay, but that won't matter if nobody came to it in the first place.

Another great history lesson. 5:00 card size matters: to this day i have met several people that pointed out the need to but special size sleeves to play yugioh is one of the reasons that made transitioning from others cards extra hard.; less size equals smaller illustration sizes, and art sells a game- not that konami values artists; less space to change the layout and the need for smaller font, another problem,
@fernandobanda5734
@fernandobanda5734 2 года назад
Yugioh's art is as big as Magic or Pokémon back in the day. It even covered more vertical space. The real victim was the font size (which is also understandable because effects were very simple at first and Japanese characters didn't take that much space).

@@goncaloferreira6429 I think so. I can't find exaxt measurements on the Yugioh art box, but compared to a Magic card, the width of the artbox is barely shorter, but the height is much larger, like a square / 1:1 ratio. Yugioh covers much more with its art even though the whole card is a bit smaller.
