Remarkable presentation and facts. This should be viewed by every citizen of Chennai and every one who wants to know the salient aspects of the history of Chennai. Needless to say, this deserves to be presented to foreign investors, tourists from abroad and other cities of India as an official presentation of the TN Government and as an Introduction to the prospective Investors, Tourists and other interested Orgainisations and people.

Wonderful. Many points of Chennai history explained in a smooth flow manner. One thing to be mentioned. Karma veerar Kamaraj ‘s Midday meals scheme was responsible to draw thousands of children into schools. MGR improved the scheme. Awesome memorable incidences..Thanks.🙏🌺🌼

Absolutely fantastic. There is so much greatness we didn't know about our own Madarasapattinam. Thanks to Sri.V.Sriram. Our Tamil cinema was talked about, not just in Bollywood, but the world over. The great American director Ellis Duncan made at least 10 movies in Tamil, including Sathi Leelavathi (1936) and Meera (1945) starring M.S.Subbulakshmi. That MS Amma donated every paise she earned is so heart-warming to know. The place where Tiruvalluvar was born is now a temple in Mylapore, right behind City Centre mall. One should visit this place. So serene and beautiful. Talking of finance, 'Mint' right next to George Town is where coins were printed for currency circulation. We have the Stanley Hospital there now. The Chettiars have done a lot in the field of education too. Chidambaram Annamalai University is an example. The Jains in Tamilnadu are called as Samanar. Ilango Adigal the author of Silappadhikaram is believed to be a Jain monk. Sri.Sriram's take on corruption is so hilarious and beautiful. During one of the Indian Bank scams, when asked by a foreign reporter if it involved millions or billions, our guy replied "I don't know about that. But it sure does involve a lot of Tamilians". I heard that Harvard now has a Tamil department. Lots of scholarly work and research take place there. No wonder, the locality adjacent to Central station is called "Periya medu" meaning 'big mound'? We should also remember the great work done by M.S.Swaminathan in the agriculture sector. He was instrumental in India having the Green Revolution. Not to forget the great Grand Master Viswanathan Anand who made India proud by his sporting abilities in the world chess arena. And A.R.Rahman who won Oscars in the world cinema stage. As soon as this Lockdown is relaxed, I am heading straight to the Lighthouse at Marina beach to feel how big and beautiful Chennai is. The ocean on one side and the ocean of people and houses on the other side. It is just a treat to the eyes.
Our Chettiars did not have vision. They selected a wrong destination, unlike Parsis, Gujaratis, Sindhis and others. Result -we had all Rangoon refugees in each and every TN villages. This is the history: 1.Burma is Myanmar. 2.The outward migration on an organized scale came during British Rule. 3.The commissioning of railway line in 1860 made the trading easy across India. 4.In overseas, Parsis running into China; Gujaratis into Red Sea, Persian Gulf; Sind workerss into Ports in Americas, Europe. 5.For the Nattukottai Chettiars of Tamil Nadu, the chief investment destination was South East Asia. From around 1830, confined Chettiars in Madras presidency, started exporting their capital to Ceylon(Sri Lanka), Burma (Myanmar), Straits settlement (Singapore, Malacca and Penang) and Indo-China. 6.As per the Indian Estimate, the working funds of Chettiars were deployed 64% in Burma, 20% in Malaya, 11% in Ceylon, 4% in Indo China. Less than 1% is deployed in Madras. 7.Between 1852 -1932, the area under paddy in lower Burma, rose from 6 lakh acres to 97 lakh acres. By 1936, 1650 Chettiar firms controlling 24 lakh acres or a quarter of farm land in Burma’s 13 districs. 8.Japanese invasion of Burma during World war 2, hit the community. They have foregone much of they own and ran for cover.

Very nice presentation but the speaker forgot to make a mention about other stalwarts of TN like Karunanithi and Jayalalitha in fact These two only paved way for TN becoming the Automobile hub of the world, Karunanithi left no stone unturned in making TN an IT hub too with the support of Maran.... Otherwise this presentation was very very interesting.

I am the beneficiary of it right from my first standard from 1965. Regarding noon meals scheme : All credit should go to that great , true statesman Thiru Kamarajar only. Very good study. The noon meal scheme was started first in the whole country by Kamaraj as " மதிய உணவுத்திட்டம்" which we all got benefited as students. Later MGR expanded it as " சத்துணவுத்திட்டம்". This is the fact.

Inference- Money making at Chennai is based on extra ordinary skills of South Indians - IT or Auto or any other services or industry. Western India makes money through trading. You know, which is easier. I will give an example of textiles you frequently mentioned, spinning mills make 4% Net profit by manufacturing whereas a trader in Kolkatta or Mumbai pockets 2.5% through commission. Decide who has the art of making money. The strong theory of Mumbai making money is still intact. You can go through 6 more comments of me.
Sir one small clarification. MGR is the one who changed noon meal plan to Healthy noon meal plan. Noon meal plan was started by Kalviku kanthantha Mudhalvar.Kamarajar.

Brilliant information. But I differ in two facts. Noon meal was started much before MGR and TVS started transport business in the time of Madras presidency in 1911.
Good session lot Of info.. one correction the noon meal policy taken by Neethi Karachi in small scale later great kamaraj expanded.not MGR .. he continued and improvised

Col Alcott of the Theosophical Society started the free noon meal.scheme, when he started the 5 schools in the Chennai area for the fishermen and other such traders. Later the Theosophical Society handed over all but the current Ollcott Memorial School, Adyar, to the state govt.

Sir, I regret you forgot to include the pioneer of the shipping industry Mr. V. O. Chidambaram Pillai (கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழன்). How could you miss him? He got a clear vision and conferred a tight competition to the British. Of course, he was betrayed by evil forces. Therefore, he failed to run the company in profit.

In the past, Reputed NBFC of families are Bajaj Finance, Cholamandalam, Sundaram, First Lease Co. Now you can compare where is Bajaj Finance in comparison with others. First Lease Company is in ICU with some fraud. Contrary to reputation, Shriram Group, Muthoot and Manapuram show exponential growth.

Funding the British Empire and its money making is nothing to be proud of. The more money they made, they more they could control and rule India. It's our shortsightedness ( making money today) that is still the obstacle for true Indian independence and creativity. In short, nothing to be proud of.
George town where my father and me born. My mother born in Park Town. Distance is 2 kms. My uncle used to take hand rickshaws to drop me in GT from PT. My grandma's usual instructions to uncle was drop me safely in town. PT was not accepted those days as town thoufh its called PT. We grew there. Brilliant cash rich Chettiars now become poor. Pity.
